The Samsung Exhibit II 4G is a nice, if low-key update to the original model. But there's a twist: This time around, T-Mobile is promoting it in both prepaid ($199.99) and standard two-year contract versions ($29.99). Either way, if you're on a tight budget, you can get a solid Android cell phone. Design, Call Quality, and AppsThe Exhibit II 4G measures 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4 ounces. The dark blue plastic, tapered edges, and textured plastic back panel make the Exhibit II 4G comfortable to hold and talk on. It looks more like a standard slab-style touch screen phone than the previous model did, as it loses the distinctive (if ultimately pointless) pinched chin at the bottom. In exchange, it gets a bigger screen. The 3.7-inch, 480-by-800-pixel display looks sharp and bright, and the slight uptick in size makes typing more comfortable than before, especially in portrait mode. The Exhibit II 4G is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and tri-band HSPA+ 21 (850/1700/2100) device with 802.11b/g/partial-n Wi-Fi. It also supports Wi-Fi calling, which is one of our favorite T-Mobile features.
The Samsung Exhibit II 4G is aimed primarily at commitment-challenged consumers. Being one of the quickest product sequels we've seen in a while, the device is marketed mostly as a Pay as you go phone, which offers you the full Android functionality at the affordable price of $200 with no contract required. Being only the fourth largest wireless provider in the United States, T-Mobile has always positioned itself as the budget alternative to its significantly larger competitors. This year, the magenta colored provider has become even more aggressive in its pricing by offering all-you-can-eat monthly plans, which require no contract. In case the device looks somewhat familiar to you, you've probably guessed it right. The Exhibit II 4G is essentially the U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy W. In order to fit its attractive price tag however, some of its hardware has been replaced with less capable options. The CPU of the Exhibit II is a 1GHz Snapdragon, compared to the 1.4 GHz Scorpion core of the Galaxy W. Its camera unit on the other hand, comes straight from 2008 with its 3.2MP resolution and VGA video recording.
How often do you use your phone to call people? Odds are, you want a smartphone for all the "smart" things it does with the mobile Internet connection, not for the "phone" itself. That's the idea behind the Samsung Exhibit II 4G ($200 contract-free; price as of November 11, 2011), which T-Mobile is offering as its flagship handset for its new partner plan with Walmart, which provides 5GB of 4G data, unlimited texting, and 100 voice minutes for $30 a month, no contract necessary. I used the Exhibit II 4G to see whether mobile VoIP was good enough for me to do without a voice plan; read "Going VoIP-Only: Do You Still Need Cellular Voice Service?" for the full story. The Specs Compared Although the T-Mobile/Walmart plan is undoubtedly compelling, it's only as good as the smartphone you're using with it--as demonstrated by the major, full-featured handsets at the high end of the prepaid-smartphone spectrum, such as the Motorola Triumph. Looking at the specs alone, the Exhibit II 4G is in good company among the prepaid crowd, though it doesn't hold a candle to high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S II.
T-Mobile has taken an interesting turn with the Samsung Exhibit II 4G, and I'll tell you why. The original Samsung Exhibit 4G (which was quite good) only received the breath of life in June, and it's already being subsumed by a sequel. Moreover, the new Exhibit is the same phone as the Samsung Galaxy W, which was introduced for the U.K. last August. I'm not sure why T-Mobile was in such a rush to accelerate its Exhibit brand (apart, perhaps, from the ease of already possessing rights to the Exhibit name), but I will admit that the specs are nice for the price. First things first, the Exhibit II 4G runs on T-Mobile's HSPA+ "4G" network. It has a 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen, a 1GHz processor, a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a front-facing VGA camera. There's also support for T-Mobile TV, and apps like Qik video and the Swype virtual keyboard come preinstalled. Pricing is the really attractive selling point, with the Exhibit II 4G costing just $29.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate when you buy it with a new, two-year contract, and $199.99 off-contract through Wal-Mart. In fact, T-Mobile is calling the Exhibit II 4G the "first no-annual-contract 4G smartphone to be sold at most Wal-Mart stores."
Wasting no time in bringing the Samsung Exhibit II 4G to market (its predecessor first busted onto the scene this past summer), it's being introduced this time around as both a prepaid and postpaid option. With the former, it's being blessed with an impressive $200 pricing, which goes hand-to-hand with T-Mobile's recently introduced $30 per month unlimited plan. Seemingly considered to be a mid-range offering, dictated by its hardware specs, it'll be interesting to see how this affordable Android smartphone is able to distinguish itself from its rivals. The package contains:In the design front, the only thing new about this conventional looking handset is that it omits the optical trackpad from before, and utilizes a plasticy patterned design back cover . Not surprisingly, it feels little bit on the cheap side, but then again, it's a little bit better than your typical prepaid phone. Nonetheless, it's compact and light enough to go unnoticed in the pockets.Size Visualization ToolThe Samsung Exhibit II 4G features a larger , which produces some sharp and crisp looking details. Furthermore, we dig the deep and distinctive color tones that it's able to muster – pretty good for the price. Howver, its brightest output is on the weak side.
