Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones
We're testing the latter today, which includes a slide-out physical keyboard, while on the former it's underneath the screen, like on a BlackBerry. Given that BlackBerrys are amongst the best pro smartphones around--just behind Nokia's Eseries--Samsung has got its work cut out. ... and we're not talking about price, but the size and weight of the handset itself. While RIM has put the BlackBerry Curve and Bold on a diet, Samsung doesn't seem to mind having a bigger phone and you can tell: the B7610 feels heavy in your hand and plugging in the hands-free kit is almost a relief. In terms of style, although the Omnia Pro has borrowed plenty of elements from the Omnia II, it reminded us most of some blocky Nokia handsets. We notice a slight wobble in between the screen and the keyboard, another thing it has in common with some Nokia smartphones. Although it's entirely made of plastic, the B7610 is reasonably well turned-out and it is the perfect example of a mid-range pro smartphone. As soon as you switch it on, it's obvious that this phone has inherited some of the Omnia II's qualities, including the screen. The AMOLED display works wonders and we are looking forward to seeing more of this technology in 2010 given how much easier it is to view, especially outside in bright sunlight.
Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO review: Pro toolbox
Now that we have the B7610 OmniaPRO running on the much-awaited Windows Mobile 6.5, we're finally up to speed. Omnia smartphones have a pretty wide reach already and they are known for their WinMo customizations and feature-rich specs sheets. The B7610 OmniaPRO however was the first family member to sport a full hardware keyboard and by the looks of it, Samsung have done a great job. Side-sliding or not, the B7610 OmniaPRO is definitely a capable device in both hardware and software equipment. The QWERTY keyboard however is a convenience tool usually reserved for the competition's high-end offerings, so you can bet the OmniaPRO will have to tackle some really capable contenders. But you can easily tell, it a tough nut to crack as well. Who is the OmniaPRO is a multiple choice question. And there is more than one correct answer. The original Omnia has produced such an offspring choosing names became a problem. They even had to name one of the kids after the uncle. If you've been keeping track, you'd know the OmniaPRO has an Armani-branded alter-ego - the B7620. But well, Giorgio was lucky.
Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO preview: First look
Samsung are not quite the standard-setter in communicator devices but are obviously keen to have their say. Playing catch up seems well in order for a debut but we guess someone here is set to play for keeps. The Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO is a generously spec'd device that's poised to tackle the best in the class and even raise the bet. While sheer size and scope confine it to a niche, the Samsung communicator might be just the right option for those served by that niche. Having acquired a pre-release sample of the side-slider PocketPC we are squeezing in a short preview, introducing its most important features. The chunky bloke does give a decent first impression, but handling will be the ultimate test. For starters, let's look at the key items on the Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO's balance sheet. Samsung are obviously eyeing market penetration at all levels. The B7610 OmniaPRO is their scout in a long colonized territory. HTC.are clearly the key target, though the communicator game is competitive enough with XPERIA, Nseries and Eseries all keen to take the lead.
