Samsung Ativ S review

Samsung was the first manufacturer to officially announce a Windows Phone 8 device, but has since been suspiciously quiet about its plans. Plagued by delays and a missed launch period with HTC and Nokia, Samsung's carrier deals, release dates, and exact pricing haven't been forthcoming. Microsoft rarely mentions the company's devices in marketing materials, and it feels like Samsung's Windows Phone 8 efforts have been all but forgotten. Samsung might seem like an afterthought for Microsoft and Windows Phone, but now the Ativ S comes thundering onto the scene with the same 4.8-inch display as the company's flagship Galaxy S III. The Ativ S is a huge Windows Phone handset, but it's also only 8.7mm thick, making this both the largest and the thinnest Windows Phone 8 device available. Is this a true competitor to the Galaxy S III and the current crop of Windows Phone devices, or is it just another rebadged Android phone with some software additions that will soon be forgotten? Read on to find out. Video review Hardware / design I was always a fan of Samsung's original Windows Phone handset, the Focus. It was fairly unique against the company's Android designs, and it marked the beginning of Windows Phone as its own viable platform.

Samsung ATIV S Review

Samsung's ATIV S is a strange kind of Windows Phone device. Not because it does anything wrong, but because it really stands out from the first batch of Windows Phone 8 devices. While Nokia and HTC are trying to come up with most lively and cheerful colors, Samsung has decided to go with the strict, business kind of look with the ATIV S, resembling some of the company's old Windows Mobile devices. But can “strict” and “business” go hand-in-hand with “Windows Phone 8” – a platform which Microsoft is desperately trying to market to consumers? The ATIV S differs from the rest in the WP8 universe with one more thing – in a typical Samsung fashion, it offers a very large display, measuring 4.8 inches. Although there are other options with pretty sizable screens, none is really that big. But the typical Windows Phone customer may turn to be different from the Android one. The ATIV S is a WP8 smartphone that can tell us if Samsung will be able to repeat the tremendous success it has seen on the market for Android devices. Let us examine!Omnia reborn? Well, yes and no. The ATIV S reminds us of a cross between an Omnia and a Galaxy S III.

Samsung Ativ S review: A fresh start

Microsoft's campaign is underway across the board with Windows 8, RT and WP 8 and all eyes are now set on Redmond's allies for a demonstration of fire power. Following some early warning shots from Nokia and HTC, Samsung are now free to fire at will. Their Ativ S was the first Windows Phone 8 flagship announced and, respectful of chronology, the first we're about to properly review. The Nokia Lumia 920, the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Ativ S are often painted as allies - but that's mostly rhetoric. To a certain point, they have little choice but to unite against the Android and iPhone hordes. On the other hand, these fine smartphones will be sworn enemies fighting over every user drawn close enough by Microsoft's upgraded platform. And by the way, Windows Phone 8's appeal is easy enough to understand. It is now a consistent cross-device platform that will get app developers interested. Multiple-core-chipset and screen resolution support will help Microsoft-powered devices stand next to their Android and iOS counterparts as equals. OEMs on the other hand are also giving potential users a good enough reason to be excited.

Hands on: Samsung Ativ S (Preview)

For anyone wondering what Samsung's answer to the Windows Phone 8 question will be, we've got the answer. It's the Samsung Ativ S, an aluminum beauty with a 1.5GHz processor that's ready to rock with Microsoft's new smartphone OS.Thanks to phones and phablets like the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2, Samsung has established itself as an industry leader in mobile hardware. While the Ativ S closely resembles its Android cousins, can it make good on Samsung's stellar reputation? At Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco, we went hands-on with the Ativ S. While exact pricing and release date for this device are still murky, we think both Galaxy S3 fans that are Windows Phone 8-curious and those new to Samsung devices have plenty to be excited about with the Ativ S. In fact, it might be the best Windows Phone 8 we've seen yet.A familiar faceOn first impression, the Ativ S looks a lot the Galaxy S3. With the same aluminum chassis, it's just a tiny bit longer than the S3 and sports a physical Windows button and capacitive back and search keys, like we've seen on all Windows Phone 8 devices so far.

Samsung Ativ S (Preview)

Windows Phone is about to get a huge shot in the arm with the arrival of Windows Phone 8, which adds loads of new software features and throws open the doors to mobiles with high-resolution screens and powerful processors.Samsung is barging in like a brash bulldog with its first Windows Phone 8 device -- the palm-filling Ativ S. Bearing a daft name (it's 'vita' backwards, says Samsung, as if that makes it okay) and a big screen, this is a phone worth keeping an eye on.Read on for our hands-on impressions of the Ativ S, and be sure to check this page again later for hands-on video and -- eventually -- a full review. The Ativ S is a huge phone, dwarfed only by gadgets like the Galaxy Note. It has a 4.8-inch display, which is the same size as Samsung's extremely popular, Android-powered Galaxy S3.That screen is of the HD Super AMOLED variety, which means it'll be extremely colourful, with a huge heap of contrast to do your photos and video justice. The display is 720p, once more matching the Galaxy S3.This phone is extremely slim, measuring just 8.7mm thick. It's light too, at 135g, so even though it's a very big mobile, carting it about all afternoon won't weigh you down.
