At first glance you might be put off by the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC v2 due to its price. If you do, though, you'd be missing out on an excellent Bluetooth device that, in our tests, exceeded our expectations. There's no denying that charging around £95 for a Bluetooth headset is a big ask – Plantronics' own Discovery 975 is almost half the price. However, there is some excellent technology that makes the high price of the Voyager Pro UC v2 a bit more palatable. To begin with, the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC v2 is very comfortable to wear, with most of the body made out of rubber. Discomfort is the Achilles heel of a lot of Bluetooth headsets, but not so here – we were able to wear the earpiece and microphone set for a number of hours without feeling uncomfortable.Button placement is also excellent, making it easy to operate while wearing it. The Plantronics Voyager Pro UC v2 connects to devices via Bluetooth, and also comes with a handy USB dongle that enables it to be connected to computers without Bluetooth connectivity. This allowed us to use it for Skype calls on our test desktop PC, then easily pair it with a PlayStation 3 for chatting while playing online games. This makes it a very versatile headset.
I had high expectations for the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC. For starters, the $200 (as of March 1, 2011) Bluetooth headset promised to deliver a full-on communications package that would allow users to connect it to a PC for software installations and updates--the headset can integrate with Skype, for example. And its sensor technology can detect when the Voyager Pro UC is in the user's ear, so you can make it answer calls automatically. Does it pass muster? With regards to all of the above, yes. But it fails to meet expectations in other ways. First off, though, a word about its design. A competing model, the Motorola Oasis, is shaped like a mini-golf putter. The Plantronics Voyager Pro UC is similar in appearance, only the "putter" part is considerably larger, more boat-shaped. Compared with the Oasis, the Voyager Pro UC provided a better fit in my case, albeit by just a hair. Even though it is bulkier and the fit was neither particularly snug nor comfy, the weight felt more evenly distributed. I found that the smallest earbud cover was too big for my ear, but the overall fit pleased another tester with larger ears. The boom is long and skinny, but it did not feel invasive on my face.
The Plantronics Voyager Pro UC brings some interesting sensor features and PC soft-phone compatibility to a long-lasting, great-sounding Bluetooth headset. But at $199.99, it's overpriced compared with its sensor-free brother, the Voyager Pro+, which costs half as much. The high price means it gets a slightly lower rating than what its top-notch sound quality suggests. The Voyager Pro UC looks exactly like the Plantronics Voyager Pro+ ($99, 4 stars), although the kit comes with a few accessories that the Pro+ doesn't include: a leather carrying case, a USB cable, and a tiny little Bluetooth dongle for PCs. The Bluetooth dongle is already paired with the headset, and will only work with the headset; it's not a general-purpose Bluetooth device. The headset itself looks the same as the Voyager Pro+. You can read our Voyager Pro+ review, but in brief, this is a large, over-the-ear headset designed for all day use. Voice quality is absolutely stellar; thanks to the big boom microphone and top-notch software. Battery life is also excellent, with 6 hours and 38 minutes of tested talk time. Like the Pro+, the UC supports A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) stereo music over a mono headset, but it's clearly tuned to prefer voices, so you get a slightly tinny sound.
A decade after its first Bluetooth headset in 2001, Plantronics still stands out as one of the leaders in an increasingly crowded field. The Voyager line of headsets is especially popular with consumers who prize audio quality and comfort above all else. We were glad to see Plantronics update its lineup with the Voyager Pro Plus last year, which added A2DP streaming, voice alerts, and even better noise reduction. But the innovation didn't stop there. Plantronics has introduced yet another improvement on its Voyager Pro line with the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC. Undeniably the company's most advanced headset yet, the Voyager Pro UC uses new sensor technology that can detect whether it is on or off the ear. This increases the headset's functionality tenfold--the ability to answer a call just by putting on the headset, for example, is fantastic. The Voyager Pro UC also works with a variety of softphone and VoIP PC applications without ever losing mobile connectivity. Even though the design of the headset is the same and the audio quality is unchanged, we think this new technology is highly impressive. Just because of that, we're elevating the headset to Editors' Choice.
Bluetooth headsets are mostly associated - literally, in fact - with cellphones, but there are plenty of people looking to go wireless with their computers for VoIP. Plantronics' Voyager PRO UC looks like a regular headset but is designed to pair not only with your phone but your computer via a bundled USB dongle, and to maintain those connections simultaneously. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. The design of the Voyager PRO UC won't come as a surprise if you're familiar with other models from Plantronics' range. It's not the slickest of Bluetooth headset designs, with a size-able battery section that hangs over the back of your ear, and a reasonably long boom microphone arm, but it's well made and the plastics and rubber feel of high quality. Since the ear-loop is responsible for keeping the Voyager PRO UC in place, the earpiece itself doesn't need to be buried in your ear canal. That minimizes longer-term discomfort and also allows for some background noise to still be heard. If you're planning on wearing the Plantronics throughout your work day, it's useful being able to hear what's going on around you when you're not on a call.
