Plantronics Savor M1100
The Plantronics Savor is a sort-of-successor to last year's Discovery 975 ($129.99, 4 stars), and is another fashion-forward model in the company's lineup. The Savor features 3-mic noise cancellation, on-headset voice commands, and Vocalyst, a hands-free subscription service that will read your text messages to you or run voice-activated Internet searches. However, some flaws revealed in testing showed Plantronics still has some work to do in order to catch the class leaders. The Plantronics Savor is about the same size as the BlueAnt Q2 ($129, 4 stars) and the Sound ID 510 ($129.99, 4 stars), but it's a little longer and pointier. It's made of darkened chrome plastic and black rubber. The bottom edge contains a hardware power switch, while the top edge has a volume toggle; the front panel contains two buttons. Fitting the Savor was easy, although I've noticed that Plantronics headsets just tend to fit my ears better than those from other brands. That's purely a personal trait; the Savor comes with two extra ear buds in different sizes in case the default one doesn't fit. The clear plastic ear hook snaps on and off; wearing it is optional, though I preferred the fit with the hook rather than without.

Plantronics continues to plug away at the Bluetooth headset market, and while there are plenty of super-budget models out there, the company still reckons there's a higher-tier of premium buyers looking for the very best in wireless performance. Into that niche drops the new Plantronics Savor M1100, which blends voice control with a audio-controlled companion service called Vocalyst, as well as an update to the well-received Plantronics Voyager Pro, the Pro+. Plantronics believe the key to the premium market is enabling straightforward multitasking with solid audio performance, hence the Savor M1100′s triple-microphone array and the bundled one year subscription to the new Vocalyst service. Bearing the company's A-frame design, the Savor is a reasonably short and - at 9g - lightweight headset, though it's surprisingly thick; Plantronics tells us that's to accommodate the larger battery required for the three microphones, though the M1100 still tops out at 4hrs talktime. Controls include a physical power switch, which we always approve of, together with a volume rocker, a call answer/end button and a dedicated voice command button.

If you're the type that can't stand to be away from your e-mail and Twitter feed for long, you might appreciate the freedom that the Plantronics Savor M1100 Bluetooth headset ($100 as of September 27, 2010) affords you. Not only can you listen to e-mail and incoming tweets without a PC, but you can also send replies as audio attachments or, with an extra-cost option, have the unit convert your speech to text first. You can use the Savor to listen to news, finance, sports, or weather updates from sources such as CNN and Yahoo; and with an Android or BlackBerry smartphone app, you can have it read incoming text messages and send an automatic reply such as "I'm on the road, so I'll text you back later." At the heart of the Savor M1100's extra abilities is the new Plantronics Vocalyst online service, which enables a variety of voice features. Before you can use the service, you need to register your Savor M1100, through its unique activation code, with the Vocalyst Website. Included with the headset is a free year of Vocalyst Basic, which is otherwise $3 a month or $25 a year. Vocalyst Pro, which adds a number of productivity features and the ability to convert speech to text, is $6 per month or $60 a year; you can download the free Android and BlackBerry apps from those platforms' respective app stores.
