Palm Pixi Plus Review

Palm has hit the jackpot with its latest candy bar smartphone. Okay, it's not completely perfect, but the Palm Pixi certainly looks the part. And it boasts a touch-screen, excellent keyboard and the smoothest operating system you'll find on any handset except an iPhone. Comparing it to the iPhone 4, it's only slightly thicker, and fits comfortably into the hand. Its matte rubber back contrasts with the smooth glass screen and shiny keys on the front. It also wins on size – if you've been put off getting an iPhone because it's too big, the Pixi Plus might well win you over. Just my type A third of the device's front is taken up with a QWERTY keyboard. Palm has a long tradition of very usable keyboards – like BlackBerry – and despite its small size, the Pixi Plus's keyboard is user-friendly. The small, rubbery button keys may be close together but we still found it easy to type quickly and accurately. The keys are ridged, which helps the user find them easily, despite their diminutive size. In fact, thanks to those ridges, they're easier to use than the flat, oblong, and much larger keys of the Motorola Milestone. The screen, at 2.6 inches, may not be big enough for watching a whole film on, but is good enough for messaging and a limited amount of web surfing.

Palm Pixi Plus

Certainly not the last major carrier to adopt webOS into its lineup, AT&T customers have been fortunate to see Palm's once fledgling mobile operating platform make its entrance with the Palm Pre Plus. However, customers are now given a choice with the recent introduction of the Palm Pixi Plus – it surely feels late to the game, but it's nonetheless finally here. As we've seen Android's big push with AT&T of late, it may require more than freebies to entice people to side with the Palm Pixi Plus for AT&T.The package contains:When we were first introduced to the original Palm Pixi, we were amazed by its light weight and remarkable compact form factor that's traditionally dominated by RIM's line of portrait style QWERTY handsets. AT&T's Palm Pixi Plus is an exact replica to Verizon's version with the exception of the obvious AT&T branding on the front. Overall, it's still a refreshing look when you take into consideration the lack of compact looking devices employing this particular form factor – but it's starting to become rather stale at this point.

Palm Pixi Plus

Palm's Pixi Plus has finally made its way over to AT&T. But there's not much else here to distinguish it - even with its blue version going for free. The black version (which I tested) costs $49.99 up-front. Like all webOS-powered Palm devices, the Pixi Plus is a sweet little smartphone. But the larger Palm Pre Plus ($149.99, ) is superior all around, and the iPhone 3GS ($99, ) is better still. The aptly named Pixi Plus is a tiny thing. It measures 4.4 by 2.2 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.5 ounces. It's thin in the hand, with a pleasant rubbery black coating, tapered edges, and a lightweight feel. The 2.6-inch capacitive touch screen features 320-by-400-pixel resolution. The tiny, sticky QWERTY keyboard feels much better to type on than it looks, although it's undeniably cramped. The AT&T version is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSDPA 3.6 (850/1900 MHz) device, meaning that it hits 3G data speeds in the U.S., but just 2G speeds overseas. It includes Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, but lacks the Verizon version of the Palm Pixi Plus' ($99.99-199.99, ) ability to function as a hotspot for up to five devices. Voice quality was mixed.

Palm Pixi Plus review

The Palm Pixi Plus – the Pre's dinky sidekick – makes its UK debut and is the latest smartphone to offer a scaled down, affordable alternative to a premium handset. The new and improved Pixi follows the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and HTC HD Mini into the arena, all of which boast most of the main features without the cumbersome size and cost. Can this be the handset to help web OS reach the masses? The original Pixi was a US-only release, so we'll treat this as a brand new handset. Not that we have to go into too much detail, the improvements can be summed up in one word: Wi-Fi. The Pixi earns its Plus by adding 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, but aside from that it's exactly the same handset. However, the important thing is that the web OS operating system we loved on the Palm Pre remains in place, which makes the phone far more than just a poor man's version of the Pre, but a credible second-tier player for those seeking to perhaps get on the smartphone ladder for the first time.Boasting a candybar form factor, as opposed to the Pre Plus' curvy-slidy number, the Pixi Plus has has a QWERTY keyboard even smaller than the one that has given us problems on the Pre.

Palm Pixi Plus

The Palm Pixi Plus isn't exactly new, but its launch on AT&T this coming Sunday will mark the debut of the GSM version in the US market. Priced at a featurephone-rivalling $49.99 (with a new agreement, naturally), the obvious question is whether you're getting more for your money by opting for the webOS handset. Check out our review after the cut. Physically the Pixi Plus obviously has a more straightforward design than the Pre Plus' sliding form-factor, instead a candybar with the QWERTY keyboard on show all the time. The display is a smaller, 2.63-inch panel, now running at 320 x 400, but is still separated from the keyboard by a horizontal “gesture strip”. The center point of that strip lights up briefly whenever you tap it to go back to the Cards panel. Other hardware controls are minimal. There's a power/sleep key built into the top left edge, volume controls on the upper right hand side, and a physical ringer switch just above that. The back of the phone holds the 2-megapixel fixed-focus camera with LED flash, which drops a megapixel or so of resolution from the Pre Plus, and there's still no dedicated hardware button for triggering photos.

Palm Pixi Plus

The "Plus" in the Palm Pixi Plus ($50 with a two-year contract from AT&T; price as of 6/3/10) really means one thing: the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity. Other than that, the phone is identical in specs and design to its predecessor. While the keyboard isn't perfect and WebOS performance can be sluggish, the Pixi Plus is a solid, inexpensive smartphone--and Wi-Fi only bolsters its abilities. Because there are so few differences between the Pixi Plus and the original Pixi in hardware and software, I have focused here mainly on the updates and new features. For a closer look at WebOS and the hardware specs, see our in-depth review of the Palm Pixi as well as the Palm Pre. The lightweight Pixi feels really nice in the hand, thanks to its rubberized back and slim body. It's also superpocketable, measuring 2.2 by 4.4 by 0.4 inches. Like the Pre Plus, the handset offers a touch area with a light-up bar; you simply tap it to shrink an app to card view. Although it is narrower, the Pixi Plus's keyboard is slightly easier to use than the Pre Plus's. Yes, it feels a bit cramped, but it doesn't have the sharp bezel lips (which sometimes interfere with typing) found on the Pre Plus's slide-out keyboard.

Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

Launched earlier this year in the US, the Palm Pixi Plus and Pre Plus smartphones are now ready to hit Europe. Both models run on Palm's custom Web OS, which already featured in last year's Pre handset. The Pixi is the lower-end model of the two with a slightly more attractive price tag, but does that make it a good deal? Find out in our product test ... which will begin in just over two minutes while we wait for the phone to start up ... The Palm Pixi Plus (left) next to the BlackBerry Curve 8520 Whereas the Pre Plus is a slider phone with a weighty, curved design, the Pixi Plus is a candybar mobile with a slim, lightweight feel to it. In fact, at just 1 cm thick and weighing under 94 grams, it's a pleasingly compact phone. The 2.6-inch capacitive touch-screen allows multi-touch control with accurate results. Plus, just below the screen there's a full keyboard which, admittedly, doesn't look incredibly practical at first glance, but you never know (see below). The phone's rear casing is made from a soft-feeling matte black rubber material. It's not quite the high-end Teflon casing used by HTC, but it's pleasant enough to handle and the phone doesn't slip out of your hands when you've been using it for a while. Another bonus is that it doesn't pick up fingerprints.

Palm Pixi Plus Review

We review the Palm Pixi Plus, a beautiful phone loaded with one of the finest smartphone operating systems to date. What the Honda Civic is to the Accord, the Pixi Plus is to the Pre Plus. While not entirely hobbled, the Pixi flutters in the shadow of the Pre with a smaller screen, a slower processor, and a lower-resolution camera, but balances the handicaps with a lightweight, easy-to-use form factor that finds fans in nearly everyone who handles it. It will have to be the body that sells it. Even with Wi-Fi added for the Plus variant, we find it hard to recommend the stripped down Pixi when the much more capable Pre stands only $70 away.Where the Palm Pre underwent very modest changes in its transition from Sprint to Verizon and subsequent “Plus” badging, the Pixi sees even fewer. Memory remains unchanged at 256MB, storage stays stagnant at 8GB, and the processor hasn’t found any more pep. However, one of the biggest magnets for criticism on the original Pixi has been corrected, as it now has built-in Wi-Fi, just like its older brother. So if the Pixi has Wi-Fi now, just what separates the Pre and the Pixi at this point? The biggest and most considerable differences can be discerned from a simple glance over.

Palm Pixi Plus

The Palm Pre’s younger, less powerful sibling, the Palm Pixi, has returned, this time on Verizon Wireless with the same “Plus” moniker. What does the Plus include? Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot capabilities on a new network, with the promise of video recording and integrated Flash support arriving with the next webOS update in February. Otherwise, the Palm Pixi Plus is identical to the original Palm Pixi, save the Verizon Wireless logo in the upper right corner. Priced at $99.99 (with a two-year contract from Verizon Wireless and a $100 mail-in rebate), the Pixi Plus is a good entry-level smart phone for users who want a messaging device that can do more. However, for just a $50 premium the Palm Pre Plus gives you a bigger screen and better graphics capability. Not since the Motorola Razr have we been impressed with just how much technology a phone maker has crammed into such a thin and light design. Measuring 4.4 x 2.2 x 0.4 inches, the Pixi Plus is taller but much more svelte than the bulbous Pre Plus (4.0 x 2.4 x 0.7 inches); the Pixi Plus even has a smaller profile than the iPhone 3GS (4.5 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches). More surprising is just how feather-light this smart phone is, weighing in at just 3.3 ounces.

Palm Pixi Plus (Verizon)

Announced alongside the Palm Pre Plus at CES 2010, the Palm Pixi Plus will be making its way to Verizon shelves on January 25. Like its Sprint counterpart, the Pixi Plus is aimed at those ready to make the jump from a feature phone to a smartphone and although it doesn't bring quite as many upgrades or enhancements as the Pre Plus, it has one major feature that the Sprint Palm Pixi doesn't have, and that's integrated Wi-Fi. The extra connectivity is most certainly a welcome addition and Verizon and Palm sweeten the deal even more by allowing you to use the smartphone as a Wi-Fi router with a new mobile hotspot app. The smartphone can be sluggish at times, so don't expect this to be your business sidekick. However, it's a good fit for first-time smartphone users, offering ease of use and all the basic organizing features and then some. Unlike the entry-level RIM BlackBerry Curve 8530, you also get the benefit of a multitouch screen and a better browser. The Palm Pixi Plus will cost $99.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. Though we groaned about Sprint's $100 price tag for the Pixi, the addition of Wi-Fi makes this price a little more justifiable.
