Nokia X6

The first Nokia phone to sport a capacitive touchscreen, the Nokia X6 also stands out as one of the only modern Nokia phones without expandable memory, and is instead available in 8GB and 16GB variants. We tested the 8GB variant. Featuring a bar form factor, the Nokia X6 has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen that's surrounded by a think bezel. Below the screen lie the LED-lit call, menu, and disconnect buttons, while above it, is the device's earpiece, and secondary video to the right. The left side of the phone features the SIM socket in the middle, while the right side features the volume rocker on top, the screen locker in the middle, and a dedicated camera button to the bottom. The top of the phone, built out of glossy plastic has the 3.5mm audio jack and charging socket in the center, with the microUSB port to the left, and the power button to the right. The bottom of the phone, also featuring glossy plastic, contains the microphone and an indentation to snap off the battery cover, which is built out of matte semi-metallic plastic. The battery cover has a space for the 5MP Carl Zeiss lens camera and dual LED flash on the top left. Overall, the phone is built out of high quality materials and has a nice, hefty feel to it, which at 122g is not much of a weight in your pocket or palm.

Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

The Nokia X6 is both a smartphone and a music mobile. It's a mid-range model that's designed to replace the 5800 XpressMusic and is clearly aimed at younger users looking for an all-in-one phone, MP3 player and portable Internet terminal. It's also the Finnish manufacturer's first mobile to feature a capacitive touch-screen. However, the X6 runs on Symbian S60 V5, an operating system that's clunky and slow and not really designed with the touch-screen experience in mind. Will that be the X6's downfall? Let's start by taking a quick look at the X6's design and handling. It won't take long, as this handset holds no real surprises: it's typical Nokia stuff. The X6 is subtle and discreet and won't win any prizes for the originality of its design. The casing is made almost entirely from decent-quality matte plastic and the product is well-finished on the whole. The overall design is classic, but doesn't look cheap or tacky. The X6 is pleasant to hold and handle. It's possibly a touch too thick, but you'll soon forget about that as the phone isn't particularly wide. For day-to-day use, it'll fit as easily in your hand as it will in your pocket. The SIM card slot is on the side of the phone, and to remove it (which, admittedly, you won't have to do often), you have to take off the battery cover.

Nokia X6 review: Going up the ladder

In the world of Nokia it's all about evolution, rather than revolution. So don't expect the specs on the X6 to blow your mind. The handset is the next logical step for the market leader scrambling to make up for a late start in touchscreens. To be honest, the Symbian touchscreen OS has been struggling to catch up with the standard setters in terms of user experience. And the X6 claims to have the answer: the responsiveness only a capacitive screen can bring. The Nokia X6 is also the first XpressMusic handset to head straight for the high-end. Midrange is the highest the music Finns have gone so we are interested to see how this change of approach works. Nokia have always had a strong appeal to the masses, but pleasing the selected few is undoubtedly harder. As you can see in the two lists above there is almost nothing new in the software package, so it all falls on the hardware to justify the high asking price. The well-stuffed retail package is a great place to start but does the capacitive screen improve usability enough to be worth the extra money over, say, the 5800 XpressMusic? And the difference in price is by no means trivial.

Nokia X6 Review

The Nokia X6 is a spiritual successor of the popular 5800 XpressMusic packing 3.2-inch (640x360) capacitive touchscreen, 32 GB internal storage, a 5 megapixel camera (Carl Zeiss optics) with VGA@30fps video recording and dual LED flash and FM radio. Yes, that's right - there is no card slot, but the 13.8 mm thickness and the 32 gigs memory should compensate that. Heralding the new Xseries range, the Nokia X6 is the latest edition to Nokia’s touch-screen device portfolio. Bursting with features for people who love music, socializing and entertainment on the move, the slim design makes carrying and listening to your favorite tracks a breeze. The Nokia X6 is a ‘Comes With Music’ device, so it provides unlimited access to the Nokia Music Store. With ample on-board storage you can discover, download and keep all the music you could ever ask for. Also perfect for people who like to snap, tag and share photos and videos. Superb image quality comes from a 5 mega-pixel camera with Carl-Zeiss optics. With its built-in features to edit videos, show them on TV or online, sharing your memories has never been easier.
