Nintendo has invited members of the press to a special hands-on event that will take place prior to the official commencement of E3 in Los Angeles next month. As we reported recently, Nintendo has opted to forego their usual keynote address at the Nokia Theatre in favor of more intimate events. The company will still be holding an event for supply chain partners. As for the media, we've been invited to get early hands on time at the booth and hear remarks from famed developer Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer. The remarks will only last 30 minutes in total. Play time is slated to begin at 11 AM on June 11, but with the show floor opening at 12 PM, things are going to get hectic after only an hour. If you are interested in further opinion an...

4G mobile broadband and LTE explainedToday's 3G/UMTS networks were only launched in 2003, but plans are already well underway for replacement 4G mobile broadband technologies. Though we Brits might be waiting a little while yet - as you'll read - things aren't quite so sluggish stateside. In the US, Sprint was investing in the 802.16e WiMAX standard - promoted by Intel stateside - while Verizon has been rolling out a rival Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. However, it has now emerged that Sprint is also planning a 4G LTE network by late 2013 - seemingly admitting that it made the wrong choice with WiMax. LTE promises mobile internet connectivity speedier than your home broadband. And it's easy to get excited. 2011 has seen several companies unveil 4G mobile phones designed specifically for ...

Some of the patents that Google will own when it acquires Motorola have been detailed, and shows some pretty key tech for mobiles. One of the most salient is that controlling proximity sensors, or as Bloomberg puts it: 'disabling a "touch sensitive" sensor when a smartphone is near a user's head to prevent inadvertent hang-ups or dialing'.Also on board is the patent controlling the ability to send GPS coordinates over a data network to allow user location - something that's becoming a real hot topic as geo-based social networking offers an advertising goldmine.Other patents noted include data packet transmission and 4G technology management, both of which are likely to be fundamental both now and in the future as mobile use continues to explode.Big hittersAccording to the article 18 patents...

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes as something of a shock. You see, for years, BlackBerry has, in a sense, been catching up. That's not a dig at its parent company – it's practically royalty in push email and corporate handset circles. But it has been rare for RIM to lead the way. Cameras, internet browsing, HTML emails – all were included on RIM's phones years after they'd become standard fare on other handsets. For recent examples of decent phones that didn't really push the envelope all that far, just take a look at the Bold 9780 and 9700.But the Bold 9000 finally offers some cutting-edge tech, and in an attractive package to boot. RIM hasn't been the speediest of companies in bringing a tablet to market. We waited months after the launch of the PlayBook to even see a working model, and in the UK we're still awaiting its retail launch. But that's okay, says RIM's UK MD Stephen Bates. In an interview with TechRadar, he told us that the company is happy to take its time honing its tablet skills just as it did with its smartphones. When asked how the company felt about the less-than-perfect reviews that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been getting pretty much across the board (we awarded it three stars in our TechRadar PlayBook review), Bates was adamant that it's all water off a duck's back. Is it though? Really? He told us, "Um. We… we're ok. We know where we are. We're fully aware of the situation – we're very happy w...

It’s a week of bad news for ZTE: not only has Huawei sued them, but Apple has snatched back its place in the IDC global phone rankings for the past quarter. Having taken fourth place in Q4 2010, ZTE now slips to fifth; Apple takes fourth with 18.7m shipments for 5-percent of the mobile phone market, behind LG in third, Samsung in second and Nokia maintaining first place. That first place is looking ever more tenuous, however, according to IDC’s figures. Nokia’s market share is down from 34.7-percent a year ago to 29.2-percent in Q1 2011, with shipment volumes climbing by less than one million units to 108.5m. Samsung too dropped share, down from 20.7-percent to 18.8-percent, as did LG, down from 8.7-percent to 6.6-percent. Only LG, however, actually saw a reduction in v...

Samsung has a lot riding on the Galaxy S II. When your displays, chips and memory are found in the flagship devices of OEMs around the world, you have to expect consumers will demand more from the hardware that bears your brand. The Galaxy S II (aka Galaxy S 2 or GSII) has even more to live up to: the original Galaxy S spawned several carrier variants that helped it become the best-selling Android smartphone in the US last year, and positioned Samsung as one of the key names to beat in the segment. So, with dual-core – and freshly overclocked – processor at the ready and a huge, Super AMOLED Plus display providing some eye-catching glitz, the Galaxy S II wades into the crowded smartphone market. The thought of Nokia and gaming may bring to mind terrible memories of taco-shaped N-Gage, but the X7 looks set to change some opinions. Surprisingly waifish in the hand, with distinct tapering edges leaving it feeling like a crisp metal slice, the angular chassis (and Symbian OS) will probably polarize opinion nonetheless. The 4-inch display runs at 640 x 360, which is a slight disappointment, but Symbian Anna looks good with its new icons on the clear AMOLED panel. Colors are suitably vivid and blacks inky-deep. Nokia hasn’t stinted on the specs otherwise, either; there’s WiFi b/g/n, HSPA (with support for both T-Mobile USA and AT&T in the same device), Bluetooth 3.0, and an 8GB microSD card in the box. The 680MHz processor falls short of the headline-grabbing dual-core...

Nokia has set itself quite the challenge with the E6, taking on the legacy of much-loved QWERTY smartphones like the E71 and E72. First impressions, though, are very positive. The 326ppi touchscreen is pixel-dense and responsive, neatly positioned to be stabbed with a thumb when holding the E6 in one hand. Meanwhile the physical keyboard delivers all the tactile feedback you’d hope for. The keys have that balance of clickiness and travel we’ve liked on earlier smartphones, and Nokia is clear in how it’s targeting not only existing Symbian QWERTY-phone users (including those looking to step away from their N97) but BlackBerry and Windows Mobile device users. They – like the side keys – are backlit, and there are the dedicated call/end keys that business users...

The Nokia E6 is another well-leaked smartphone from the past few months, and the company has finally made the messaging Symbian handset official. Like the X7 it runs the latest Symbian Anna OS, but unlike Nokias of old it also has a 2.46-inch VGA touchscreen display, offering 4x the pixels (326ppi) of earlier Eseries handsets. There’s also an 8-megapixel full-focus camera with HD video support. Obviously the big draw is the QWERTY thumb-board, like the E71 and E72, which should work well with the native Exchange support, Microsoft Communicator Mobile, and browser access to Microsoft SharePoint. Pre-loaded Quick Office means easy Word, PowerPoint and Excel editing. Talktime is up to 14.8hrs, while standby is a whopping 31 days. The Nokia E6 will go on sale in Q2 2011, priced at ...

We’ve been gradually building a picture of the Nokia E6-00 over the past few months, but the unannounced Symbian smartphone has just seen its biggest leak to-date. A prototype has apparently found its way to the NokioTeca forums and been thoroughly snapped, tested and detailed. On the confirmed list, a VGA resolution capacitive touchscreen, paired with a physical keyboard, and an 8-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording. Videos after the cut There’s also a new version of Symbian^3, tweaked to suit the landscape-orientation display, and a microUSB port, along with a 3.5mm headphone socket. No HDMI that we can spot, unlike the N8, and the E6-00 appears to follow the E7 in dropping the traditional 2mm charging socket. A new Symbian device is perhaps not what we’re r...

We had what seemed like only a few moments with this shiny little pebble back at CTIA 2011, and now we’ve got it for an extended period, all to ourselves! This is the Nokia C7 Astound, a Symbian^3 device that will be carried by T-Mobile exclusively in the very near future (April 6th for $79.99 with a 2-year contract,) has a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a physical home, call, and end-call buttons, metal chassis, and is supported by T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network for data. Let us inbox this little treasure. First Impressions This phone is what I at first felt was a blast from the past. It seemed almost ancient to be to be holding a phone without a basically square casing and screen smaller than four inches. Then I remembered that I’d just been handling the LG Optimus V, ...

WinAmp's one is a doozy: it wants to access the cellular network database to access your approximate device location, to access the GPS system to get your precise location and to view log files that can reveal how you use your phone. It's not the only one, either: another player, MixZing, wants to access the approximate location of your phone as well as access the phone features, which could potentially reveal your phone number and serial number, ...

News of a new Nokia device has leaked, courtesy of the OVI Publisher tools, the Nokia T7-00. The first of what would be a new line of nomenclature for the company, while it’s tempting to think that “T” stands for “Tablet”, unfortunately that doesn’t seem particularly likely; well, not unless you like your slates particularly low-resolution. In fact, the T7-00 gets its mention under Symbian^3 devices, and in among the handsets with 360 x 640 resolution displays. That means it’s running the same OS and has the same resolution as the N8 and C7; there’s also a mention of the still-unconfirmed Nokia E6-00, complete with a 640 x 480 resolution display. So, a new range of devices but no indication as to what segment the TSeries might target. Plus ...

According to a new US Securities and Exchange Commission filing [pdf link] from the company, Nokia’s gross base salary for Elop is €1.05m ($1.45m), in fact slightly lower than outgoing CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (who was paid around €1.18m in 2009). However, Nokia has already paid Elop €2.3m ($3.18) as compensation for lost income, and will pay a further $3.0 in October this year. A performance incentive bonus worth 150-percent of his gross salary is also on the table. Interestingly, the Nokia filing also lays out all the potential calamities, pitfalls and perils the company sees as possible from the deal with Microsoft, a multi-pag...

The update will allow single-core handsets to work with Honeycomb apps which have been created for dual-core devices, mainly tablets. The rumour does level with news from last week which suggested that the next Android release would bring bits of Honeycomb to smartphones.Gingerbread, take twoGingerbread Android 2.3 handsets aren't exactly flooding the market at present, with the Google Nexus S currently the only one available. This new development could indicate tha...

By way of a tweet, O2 has confirmed that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will be coming to its bubbly network.Vodafone has also confirmed to TechRadar that it will be ranging the gaming handset in the UK. The handset was only officially confirmed over the weekend and is set to get its official debut at Mobile World Congress on 13 February. Play dot comWe don't let silly things like official announcements get in the way though, having already had a sneaky bit of hands on fun with the Xperia Play. With a slide-out gaming pad it's not the slimmest handset in the world, but it does come with a 4-inch touchscreen and Android 2.3. Despite Vodafone and O2 both promising the handset to us Brits, we're still awaiting news of a UK release date and UK pricing - hopefully Sony Ericsson will reveal both ...

Photos of Nokia's as-yet unannounced Nokia E6-00 have made their way on to the internet, suggesting that the not-very-exciting handset may form the crux of the company's Mobile World Congress announcements. It's not setting our hearts aflame with excitement, looking very much like the Nokia E71 and most of the rest of the E-series candybar handsets. Specs relating to the business handset leaked last month, with a 640 x 480 VGA screen, Symbian^3 and HSPA on offer. Shattered touchscreen dreams?Rumours had also suggested the E6 would offer a nice big touchscreen. But, while the photos neither confirm nor deny the presence of a touchscreen on the QWERTY candybar, the screen size and masses of space dedicated to the navigational trackpad suggest it does not. We're not at all sure about the enor...

Sony Ericsson has finally officially outed its Xperia Play PSP phone in an advert aired during the Superbowl in the USA. We can look forward to a Mobile World Congress launch of the long-rumoured handset; the official announcement will be on 13 February at 6pm GMT, the same time as its Barcelona press conference. It comes as no surprise, given that TechRadar has already spent some hands on time with the Xperia Play and brought you a shortened version of the advert played during the Superbowl yesterday.Android is ready to playThe advert features the same backstreet thumb-grafting that made us feel vaguely ill last week, but the longer version sees the post-op Android get out and about. There's still no word on exactly which games will be available to play on the handset at launch aside from t...

Nokia’s upcoming E6 (E6-00) has now got some leaked images, and, news of sporting a large VGA resolution touch screen. While it is still a little incredible to believe the resolution will be upgraded from the former nHD (640x360) to nearly twic [...] Read the entire article

Yahoo has released a statement in response to Microsoft's announcement that the Windows Phone 7 3G data leak issue is linked to Yahoo Mail accounts.Microsoft revealed that the mail account was the culprit, while simultaneously confirming that a fix is on its way. Predictably, Yahoo is not too happy about being fingered for the job and has pointed out that the issue prevails only on Microsoft's mobile platform. Windows-specificThe statement reads, "Yahoo! Mail is widely available on tens of millions of mobile phones, including those running on Apple iOS, Android, Nokia Symbian, and RIM. "The issue on the Windows phones is specific to how Microsoft chose to implement IMAP for Yahoo! Mail and does not impact Yahoo! Mail on these other mobile devices. "Yahoo! has offered to provide Microsoft a...

A bug report may have let the Nokia superphone out of the MeeGo bag, thanks to a list of hardware specifications gleaned from the document. The bug report references a 1.6GHz processor (Intel made, of course), a NFC chip, 480 x 854 pixel resolution screen and high-speed HSPA+ data. Chips relating to an accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS are also mentioned in the report.MeeGolithic We recently saw some fuzzy shots of a Nokia tablet running MeeGo, although we'd wager these specs come from a smartphone rather than a slate device. Given that it's been over six months since Nokia and Intel announced their partnership, it's a definite possibility that we'll see the fruits of Nokia's MeeGo labours announced at Mobile World Congress 2011. Let's hope we'll be seeing ...

Pitting iOS vs Android vs WebOS vs MeeGo doesn't seem like a fair fight. It's akin to putting a couple of our TechRadar writers in a boxing ring with the Klitschko brothers. With Apple's iPhone/iPod/iPad OS, Google's Android, plus the Symbian, Microsoft and Blackberry platforms, do we really need any more pretenders to the mobile OS throne?Yes - because 'competition drives innovation' (or so the saying goes). Android improvements will make iOS better and vice-versa. While lower-league operating systems will have to work harder to stand out, they'll help to ensure that the big two don't get complacent. And yes again - because beyond the smartphone battleground, the next big tech confrontation is about to be fought on tablet devices. It's not just a straight iPad vs Android face-off, either....

The long, tedious wait for the white iPhone 4 could be over in March, if sources talking to Pocket-Lint are to be believed. The tech site reports that a source confirmed that small print on Apple Store signage stating that the handset would be available in Spring 2011 is correct. If true, this could mean we'll see the glistening white handset hit the shelves any time from March onwards. Whiter shade of paleIt has been almost eight months since Apple launched the latest iPhone and promised a white version. Since then, delay after delay has hit the colour-variant leaving us all wondering how hard it can really be to slap a piece of white plastic on in place of a piece of black. While we're not inclined to put money on a March release date or anything, it's nice to know there is still light a...

You can trace the history of the newest smartphones right back to the early 1990s, where cutting edge technology was a two-line LCD and phones weighed as much as a pack of beef mince.Since then, several phones have changed the world, introducing new technologies or new approaches that have altered the path of mobile communications. But which ones stand out? Here are 10 handsets that we think deserve their place in history. Maybe you owned one of them? Nokia 1011 (1992)Perhaps surprisingly, we're not kicking off this list by lugging out the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, the 1980's cellular briquette that's acknowledged to be the first truly 'mobile' phone. But we do give it a warm, appreciative hug in our article Five phones we'll never forget.Instead, we tip our TechRadar cap to the half-forgott...
