Nokia E5

Unlocked smartphones tend to cost hundreds of dollars, but the Nokia E5 is a welcome exception. It's essentially a lower cost clone of the solid Nokia E72 ($319, 3.5 stars). That makes it a good option for anyone needing an inexpensive cell phone that accepts AT&T, T-Mobile, and prepaid SIM cards here, and prepaid cards when traveling overseas. That said, it's nowhere near as advanced as today's more sophisticated Android and iPhone OS devices. The Nokia E5 measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.4 ounces. It's not as thin or expensive looking as the E72. But it holds its own, with a black and silver, all-plastic construction that manages to avoid feeling cheap. The 2.4-inch LCD displays just 320-by-240-pixel resolution, and looks dim and flat compared with, say, a recent BlackBerry. The five-way control pad and six function keys worked well. The four-row QWERTY keyboard retains its accurate, comfortable typing feel, and doesn't succumb to the prepaid Nokia C3's cheaper, less-precise key mechanism. The E5 is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and tri-band HSDPA (850/1900/2100 MHz) device with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. That means it works on AT&T and foreign 3G networks, and on T-Mobile's 2.5G EDGE network.

Nokia E5 Review

The Nokia E5 is the latest in a long line of business oriented Eseries phones, and directly follows on from the Nokia E72 with its QWERTY keyboard, landscape screen and business oriented feature-set. While most people still regard BlackBerries as the definitive business handsets, both the Nokia E71 and E72 were extremely well received. With the Nokia E5 offering similar utilities and form-factor as the E72, but at a lower price-point, have Nokia retained all the key strengths in the E5, or have they stripped it of too many features in a bid to keep the price down? Sporting a predominantly plastic body, with the exception of its battery cover, the Nokia E5 looks extremely fit for purpose. The E5 appears more straight-laced than the E72, with no design enhancements such as chrome-like trimmings to differentiate it from the array of handsets with a similar form-factor currently on the market. Despite the plastic body, the Nokia E5 still however manages to provide a solid feel, decent weighting, curved edges that feel comfortable to hold, and all in a relatively slim-line device.Size Visualization ToolThe Nokia E5's screen does what it needs to do, without any frills.

Nokia E5 review

The Nokia E5 is the latest handset from the mobile phone giant to try to straddle the professional and personal lives of its users. Once upon a time, Nokia's E series handsets were purely for the suited and booted. Remember the E55, for example? But the great build quality and services of E-series handsets became popular with funsters too, and soon the likes of the E72 popped up – a mini keyboarded BlackBerry-a-like with a clever ability to switch between two home screens, the idea being you could set one screen up for staid old working, the other up for fun and freaky play. Now with the E5, Nokia is continuing the trend. This is a phone that again offers switchable home screens – and you can choose to have the switching link on the home screen itself or buried deeper if you don't need to use it much. And there is a whole host of business and leisure related software built in.For £259 from Nokia, the phone makes sense as an option for the small business user or the more frugal IT manager looking to equip their workers with an emailing handset - or just fans of the E-Series.

Nokia E5 review

The Eseries from Nokia has always been the Finnish company's most successful brand – we named the Nokia E71 our Phone of the Year in 2008. But it has always been associated with business users, so could the new handset which, even though it is not dismissing the business market, also offers social networking features at an affordable price, be the first Eseries smartphone to appeal to the mass market? The Nokia E5 looks like its older siblings, with its wide candybar body, smallish 2.36-inch screen, and QWERTY keyboard. While the keys do run into each other, they are rounded enough in between to allow you to distinguish between them. However, be aware that we found them rather slippery, so you may need to take care when typing. The Nokia E5 raises the style bar, offering a number of colour schemes, while the back is metallic. To open the back, hold down the two buttons at the bottom of the phone. We found the volume keys on the side of the handset somewhat stiff, but happily you have an alternative in the shape of the D-pad if you're using media facilities such as the movie and video players.

Nokia E5 review: Textbook texter

Email used to be a part of the corporate world and now it?s increasingly becoming an essential means of communication for the lot of us ? not just the white-collar kind. So if you can?t fight it, the best thing to do is get yourself properly equipped ? and the Nokia E5 is the right tool for the job. It?s no old timer either, it knows how to deal with those newfangled social networks as well. The E5 has skill to match the E72 down to the last spec. OK, almost. Some features have sure taken a hit (what?s with the fixed-focus 5MP camera), but that?s something most people can live with considering the lower price of the E5. We found the Nokia C3 to be an excellent no-frills messenger. The Nokia E5 brings Symbian aboard, which accounts for many of its advantages ? multitasking, Office document viewing and editing, free voice-guided navigation ? you know the drill. Anyway, here?s what the Nokia E5 has going for and against it, in short. The Nokia E5 is probably targeted at young people stuck in a corporate environment. Or maybe it?s caught in the trend of more and more companies betting on social networking to boost sales.
