Phone Reviews: Mobiles & Smartphones

The C3 is a phone designed for the general consumer market, and in particular for users who do a lot of e-mailing, texting and social networking. It's slim, light and has a sleek brushed metal rear casing. In fact, it's really quite an attractive phone, although not everyone in our office was a fan of our test model's hot pink finish. It's certainly an eye-catching shade, but at least Nokia is daring to be different with colours that make this mobile stand out from the crowd! The C3 is the latest model in a line of prestigious Nokia handsets initially aimed at business users. In 2009, the E71 (one of the C3's predecessors) was already praised for its high-quality metal finish, its smooth and seamless OS and for its very professional handling of users' various e-mail accounts. All of these qualities have been handed down to the C3, but the new handset has also been updated to cater for social networking. The idea behind the C3 seems to have been to take a successful professional handset and to add all the ingredients of a consumer smartphone. It's a nice idea, but Nokia appears to have forgotten that in the meantime, market standards have shot up. Unfortunately, next to today's all-singing all-dancing handsets, the C3 looks like it's stuck in 2009.

Nokia C3

Nokia may still be the number one cell phone vendor in the world, but that's far from the case in the U.S. The carrier simply hasn't landed many handsets in carrier stores, and buying them unlocked is very expensive up front. The Nokia C3 is a welcome exception. It's an AT&T prepaid phone available exclusively at Wal-Mart for just $69. The C3 looks a lot like one of the company's higher-end smartphones up front, but it's really a basic texting phone in disguise. Unfortunately, it's also not very good. You can do better for similar money. Let's start with the basics. The C3 measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs four ounces. It's available in a pleasing slate blue color with silver accents. It's made mostly of matte plastic, but the aluminum battery cover gives it a touch of class, as that's the part you're holding most often. The 2.4-inch, non-touch LCD offers 320-by-240-pixel resolution. It looks bright and colorful, and the UI responds quickly to the five-way control pad and six function keys. The four row QWERTY keyboard features large, silent keys. They're a bit stiff, though. And the spacebar just felt weird; each time I pressed it, I felt multiple clicks underneath the plastic.

Nokia C3 Touch and Type Review

Earlier this year, we witnessed a surprising budget-oriented triumph from the Nokia camp in the form of the Nokia X3 Touch and Type, marrying a resistive touch-screen with a numeric keypad. A distinctly mid-range feature phone running S40, it was nevertheless a well put together solution for those who want to dabble with touch screens and also wanted the reassurance of a keypad. If we had one criticism of it however, it was that it felt too plasticy and lightweight. Queue the Nokia C3 Touch and Type. Delivering higher level build quality as found on the Nokia C6-01 and C7 with a stainless steel finish, the Nokia C3 Touch and Type delivers a little something extra to the Touch and Type range. The design of the Nokia C3 Touch and Type borrows heavily from the higher-end C-series devices as has already been mentioned, especially the Nokia C6-01. Unlike the C6-01 however, the C3 Touch and Type feels extremely well-weighted, solid and reassuringly sturdy in the hand. With a stainless steel finish across the whole unit, it also looks much higher-end than the X3 T&T alternative. The keys are large and visually complement the rest of the phone's aesthetic which is great.Size Visualization ToolThe of the Nokia C3 Touch and Type is resistive, measuring in at 2.4 inches with a resolution of 240x320 pixels.

Nokia C3 Review

One of the features Nokia touts for its Cseries line is “messaging for the masses”. The Finnish company made a name for itself with the excellent thumbboard devices from the Eseries, providing a Symbian alternative for fans of the BlackBerry form factor. The Nokia C3 is its first QWERTY messenger to be powered by Series 40 - still the most widespread mobile platform in the world. On top of that, it provides great alternative to the ever more popular homescreen widgets by allowing you access to social networking directly from the home screen. Easy SNS access usually implies that the phone is targeting the younger crowd, and so it should come in some flashy colors, and at a bargain basement price. The Nokia C3 check-marks all these, but let's see if it manages to succeed in the details...What's in the boxWe got the Slate Grey version, which has more of a bluish hue, and looks stylish nonetheless. There are also the Hot Pink and Golden White color variants of the Nokia C3, and all have metallic finish at the front. The back, where we have the 2MP camera, has a two-colored design. There is an aluminum battery cover in the middle with the front panel color without the metallic finish, and the rest is black plastic, including the sides.

Nokia C3 review

Nokia C3 is young and social, simple and reliable. Messaging and social networking are the very heart of this handset. But are they enough of a head-turner to become a phone's key selling points? Sure thing! Just add a pinch of charisma and hang a price tag fit for the masses and you've got yourself a recipe for a true love story. At its Indonesia launch, the phone drew massive crowds and it seems success in Europe is only a matter of time ? with a price tag of about 100 euro. Compromises are always implied in this price bracket but the Nokia C3 does well to focus all attention on its strengths. It?s a budget package ? no doubt about that ? but so wonderfully balanced. It has all the relevant features and the target audience isn?t likely to miss what?s not there. A QWERTY messenger focused on the basics, the Nokia C3 is an excellent upgrade option for the budget-minded. And social networking isn?t just a thing for marketing to work with. The full QWERTY keyboard, dedicated Messaging and Contacts keys, along with Wi-Fi connectivity round off a solid package that will give the right user all the performance they need. The Nokia C3 is a social gadget for the young.

Nokia C3 Review

Youth-orientated social networking phones are everywhere at the moment, and the latest contender in the crowded arena is the Nokia C3. It's the first phone in Nokia's low-priced Cseries to have Facebook and Twitter and while that sound promising, it's all-too-obviously a low-cost device. Design-wise, the Nokia C3 looks fantastic, with the professional stylings of Nokia's E3 series. Despite its lightweight plastic cover, its matte finish looks stylish. Below the 2.4-inch display sit a D-pad, call and call end keys, two option keys and two customisable shortcut keys. Below these is a four-line QWERTY keyboard that is one of the best we've seen on a low-priced handset. The camera is a basic two-megapixel model with no flash or autofocus. You've got no chance of night or inside shots, and even pictures taken in broad daylight come out quite soft, albeit it with pretty good colours. You can upload them directly but only to Flickr, oddly not Facebook, or you can send them via MMS, email or Bluetooth. As for internet, you get EDGE speeds rather than 3G, but Wi-Fi is included, which is impressive. This means that uploading and downloading is a speedy affair.

Nokia C3 review

Nokia's C3 is a companion to the recently launched, and well-received, C5 and a lookalike for the perennial favourite E72. But don't, for a single moment, labour under the illusion that it is a direct competitor for, or update of, the E72. With an asking price of £119 direct from Nokia and as little as £80 elsewhere SIM free it's obviously a budget buy. Our review sample came from Vodafone, where it costs £80 on PAYG. The E72 still costs over £250 SIM free by comparison. The E series is definitely aimed primarily at the business community, though E handsets have found favour elsewhere. The C series is aimed at people who want a budget handset and also want good communications features, hence the mini QWERTY keyboard that adorns the front and built-in Ovi Maps and Ovi Chat. Facebook and Twitter feeds can be delivered live to the main screen, and Wi-Fi helps you keep a handle on data usage. You'll need that, actually, because this handset lacks 3G. You'll be relying on GPRS and EDGE for all your network based data comms. The Nokia C3 comes in three colours. Our review sample was the slate grey option, which is really more blue than grey and a nice enough shade. There are also hot pink (eek!) and golden white versions.
