The Nokia Asha 311 has arrived in our office and we received it with mixed feelings. It's part of the Asha lineup, a series of feature phones that is largely keeping Nokia afloat at the moment as it struggles selling enough Windows Phone smartphones. The Asha has gained some momentum in developing markets like India and this here Asha 311 is one of the best touchscreen phones in the series. The Nokia Asha 311 packs a 3-inch low-res capacitive display and a 1GHz processor, both working in concert to bring the best out of the revamped interface of Series 40. Still, as affordable as the device is, low-end Android smartphones are now available for less and fighting against Android seems like an order way too tall for the Nokia phone. Let's see, however, how the phone actually performs before jumping into conclusions. In the box, you get the usual pair of horrid Nokia earbuds that distort sound so much we wouldn't even try listening to music on them. There is nothing impressive about the design of the Asha 311. It's a thick little phone with a good build quality, with no creaky moving parts.
Nokia is still picking up pace in the smartphone market, with the Microsoft-driven Lumias yet to make the impact the Finns have been hoping for since the strategy reset. In the meantime, the company has been enjoying a pretty easy run in the featurephone market, which is now virtually free or real competition. The Asha lineup is doing pretty well, as testified by the interest rates on this very website, but the long-term challenge for Nokia remains. Fending off entry-level smartphones and securing the future of the dumbphone kind may seem a futile effort, but the likes of the Asha 311 beg to differ. Here's what the best spec'd member of the family has to offer: The Asha Touch interface cannot match the versatility of proper smart platforms with hundreds of thousands of available apps. However, the simple featurephone UI allows for superior performance on modest hardware. Nokia Asha 311 uses that to its advantage and promises an experience that isn't far off similarly priced smartphones. What's more, the not-too-tech-savvy users targeted here will appreciate the simplicity and convenience.
Considering how much noise Nokia makes about its Microsoft partnership these days, you'd be forgiven for thinking all its phones ran Windows Phone. Au contraire. Nokia is still making a Series 40-based line of cheaper, basic smart phones primarily aimed at budget-conscious mobile users -- its Asha range of handsets. Early Ashas were Qwerty or keypad-clad creations but the once Mighty Finn has now unboxed some fully touchscreen options, including the Asha 311, which is available SIM-free for around £100. Nokia is hoping these swipe-friendly Ashas will be snatched off shelves by Brits seeking a cheap alternative to a budget Android. But is that wishful thinking? The Asha 311 is certainly cheap but it's not affordable enough to put clear blue water between itself and the gaggle of budget Androids clamouring for your cash. The Nokia Asha 311 is a candybar-shaped blower running its ye olde Series 40 operating system. To compete with the might of Android, the Asha 311 really needs to be £50 or £60 cheaper to even start to be worth considering. Instead, it's currently about the same price.
