In a shrinking featurephone market, the Nokia Asha lineup is trying to deliver a near-smartphone experience with less complexity and, more crucially, at a more attractive price point. The Asha 306 slots just above the middle of the pack - delivering a touchscreen display and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Nokia Asha 306 is aimed at those that value Wi-Fi connectivity over a second SIM slot (there's Asha 305 if that's not the case). Wi-Fi connectivity is the headline feature, but it's not everything the Asha 306 has going for it. The Nokia Asha 306 is no powerhouse, but then again, the target user for this one isn't really obsessed with specs. The Asha 306 makes sense for people looking for a straightforward handset for calling other people or are just on the lookout for a secondary phone, which should complement their smartphone without breaking the bank. A case can be made that touch and simple don't really mix in times when pixels and clockspeeds are what drives the industry forward. Why not simply get a regular phone with a keypad. You'll save a little money and still get basically the same functionality in a possibly smaller package. An Asha 201 would cost you significantly less too.
While Nokia has been busy wowing everyone with its Lumia range, the phone giant has also been quietly working on its budget range of Asha handsets. The top-of-the-range Asha 311 has not impressed us, but maybe the Nokia Asha 306 will fare better... At first glance, the chiselled design and Gorilla Glass touchscreen might fool you into thinking you've picked up a smartphone. Although it's nice to see something other than the usual rounded edges found on most phones, it won't take long to realise this is no smartphone... Our review model was black and smoke grey, but the Asha 306 also comes in red, white and blue. The battery cover has a matt finish to improve grip. Under the screen sit the usual Nokia Call/End buttons, while the edges play host to the lock key, volume rocker and microSD slot. Along the top edge you'll find the mini charging socket, USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. Slow down Turn on the handset and you'll see the same Series 40 OS found on the Asha 311. Its home screen features a range of colourful icons, all tweaked to look like those on Android handsets.
Nokia reserves the razzle-dazzle for its Windows Phone-powered Lumia handsets, but the once Mighty Finn is still plugging away selling a cheaper range of Asha phones, based on its old-as-the-hills Series 40 software. Asha phones are mostly aimed at buyers in developing countries such as India, but Nokia's also selling select models here in the UK in the hope of wooing you away from budget Google Android handsets. They can be described as smart phones with usability strings attached. Yes, you can download apps but don't expect this software to be as slick and easy to use as an Android or iOS device. The Asha 306 has a low price -- currently it's up for grabs SIM-free for £80 via Expansys -- but is it worth even that modest amount of cash? In a word, no. The 306 is Nokia's second all-touchscreen Asha offered in the UK, along with the Asha 311. But unlike the latter device it lacks 3G, which kills its usefulness for web browsing when out and about. There's no sensible reason to buy the 306. Even if money's tight, you're spoiled for choice with so many capable budget Androids up for grabs. This smorgasbord of cheap 'droids means you can bag something far tastier such as the T-Mobile Vivacity, which packs 3G, apps galore and puts simple-to-use software under your fingertips for the same (and even less) cash.
