The Nokia Asha 303 is the flagship of Nokia's new affordable range, that is aimed towards youth and emerging markets. While not really impressive in terms of specs, Nokia's Series 40 phones have been around for a while with millions of loyal followers in emerging markets and among teens. The sands in the mobile industry have shifted a lot since those times, though, but Asha 303 with its 1GHz processor, 3MP camera, capacitive touchscreen and physical QWERTY keyboard is also an evolution of the lineup. We also have to add the thousands of apps in the Nokia Store, but will the whole kit be enough to lure buyers away from the hip entry level Android phones? Read on our review to find out...The Nokia Asha 303 feels pretty good in the hand, thanks to its curved back and tapered sides, plus the quite respectful yet not overbearing thickness. The portrait QWERTY keyboard half is recessed below the upper screen area, as if you are dealing with a slider at first glance. Overall the phone has a bit chubby, but very lightweight and sturdy construction, incorporating some premium elements like the metal battery cover. It comes in a variety of colors.
Nokia had two big announcements to make a few months ago. And yes, it's a matter of perspective but, on certain markets, the S40-powered Asha series can be as big as Windows Phone. Anyway, now that the Lumia smartphones have had their deserved hype, it's time for the Asha handsets to step forward. The S40 platform got recently treated to lots of visual updates and the latest feature phones have joined the 1GHz league. The new Asha 303 seem to be sparing no effort to bring the complete user experience to traditionally loyal Nokia markets. At first, it felt strange, but a few minutes into it, we knew we were with a friend. The Asha 303 offers the familiar convenience of Touch and Type phones, but comes with a slightly bigger screen and most importantly a full QWERTY keyboard. With a connectivity set that borders on premium and a powerful 1GHz processor, the Asha 303 is ready to lead a Nokia return to markets the Finns like to call their own.. The Asha 303 is in charge of a lineup that tries to cover the entire range of the low end. From a basic Dual SIM solution to different combinations of touchscreen and QWERTY and cameras ranging from 2 to 5 megapixel there should be a phone for every use and budget.
Nokia might be showing off its high-end Windows Phone mobiles right now, but it hasn't forgotten about the budget blowers -- the Nokia Asha 303 is a phone that looks basic, but has a few surprises in store. Better still, if and when it makes it to the UK (we've been told to expect it in the first few months of 2012), it should cost around £100. We've gone hands-on with the Asha 303, so read on for our first impressions, and be sure to check out our hands-on photos and video in the little box to the top left of these words. We'd be lying if we said we were blown away by the Asha 303's style. It looks like the Qwerty keyboard that sits beneath the screen is meant to slide out, but in fact it's fixed in place. On the back there's an area with a brushed-metal effect, and the top and bottom of this phone feature gentle curves. The Asha 303 feels light -- it only weighs 99g, so it's no hassle to lug this phone around with you. It's not massively slim, measuring 13.9mm thick, but we reckon it's easily thin enough to squeeze into your pockets. We didn't get very much time to test the full Qwerty keyboard lurking underneath the screen, but we did note that there's no gap between each individual key, so that might lead to the occasional slip up when you're typing quickly.
