The Nokia Asha 300 is a part of Nokia's entry-level lineup that offers features that go beyond making calls and sending SMSes. With 3G connectivity, a touchscreen and social networking integration, should this be the next feature phone you opt for, or are you better off aspiring for a smartphone? One look at the Asha 300 and you will be reminded of the good old days when Nokia ruled the roost. The device has a candy bar form factor with rounded edges that gives it a classic yet modern day feel. In the box you get a pair of headphones, charger and a 2GB memory card. The device supports micro USB but you will have to purchase the cable separately. The addition of the 2GB card is a nice touch sine the internal memory of the device is limited to 140MB. You can access the memory card slot without removing the battery but it isn't hot swap, as you will have to remove the rear panel. The slot for the SIM card rests under the battery. In terms of connectivity, the device has the charging port, micro USB and the headphones jack located at the top. Apart from being able to transfer data, the micro USB port also doubles up as a charging port. The right side of the device has the volume rocker and the sleep/wake switch, which are really stiff.
The Nokia Asha 300 may not exactly fit in with today's standards of newsworthy. With smartphones flexing their muscles at venues like CES, sporting ever-expanding app markets, HD screens and multi-core processors, it's hard to see how an entry-level offering could produce much of a splash. If, however, price is a factor, or you simply want a phone that is?well, simple, then the Asha 300 could definitely make some waves in your pool. Part of a new line of phones by Nokia, which feature a revamped S40 interface and 1GHz processor, the Asha 300, and its QWERTY sibling, the Asha 303, aim to cement Nokia's place in a market they have traditionally dominated. The Touch and Type S40 interface is at once the same yet different from the traditional non-smart UI from Nokia. Combined with an app store and a customizable homescreen, there are definitely elements borrowed from more popular platforms in an attempt by Nokia to extend the functionality while retaining the basic feel of the S40. The faster processor and 128MB of RAM are more than sufficient to run the S40 quickly and without hitches. The Asha 300 walks that fine precipice between designing a phone that is contemporary, yet aims to appeal mainly to an audience where being contemporary is not as important as being simple and not too expensive.
It might not be as exciting as Nokia's new high-end Windows Phone smart phones, but the Nokia Asha 300 is still worth talking about, because it's going to be really cheap. We suspect it will cost roughly £75, and we've heard that it's heading for the UK sometime early next year. The Asha 300 doesn't offer a great deal in terms of looks. In fact it's a pretty basic blower -- there's a touchscreen sat above an alphanumeric keypad, and that's about it. The bottom of the phone is rounded, and it looks reasonably classy. The keys themselves are pleasingly spaced out, so you shouldn't have too much trouble tapping out texts, and if you're used to typing on this kind of keyboard then you'll probably be rattling out messages really quickly in no time.At 12.7mm thick, the Asha 300 isn't the slimmest phone we've ever encountered, but you'd hardly call it bulky -- this blower will slide into your jeans pocket or handbag with no complaint. It weighs a mere 85g too, so you'll hardly notice you're carrying it.The Nokia website lists the Asha 300 as coming in red and grey versions, though the one we tested had a white back. We don't know which colour options will make it to the UK however. The 2.4-inch screen is large and clear, but we have one serious gripe -- this is a resistive touchscreen, not a capacitive one.
