The Motorola Oasis ($80 as of March 1, 2011) Bluetooth headset looks a bit like a folded-up miniature-golf putter. Its shape is unusual--the Oasis's hook is squarish by design--and its boom microphone folds inward, so ferrying it around is easy. Also unusual is the placement of the Call button: It's located on the boom, whereas on all other headsets I've tested the chief button sits somewhere around the ear's curve or adjacent to the ear. The novel position of the Call button took getting used to. Finding an acceptable fit required both hands, along with some futzing and shoving. The part of the headset that accommodates the volume controls and mute buttons (the "putter" portion) is bulky, and this hook shape perches over the ear. Plus, the earbud fitted with the smallest cover still felt too large for my ears. Pushing the earpiece in helped anchor the Oasis to my ear somewhat, but overall the fit did not feel comfortable, secure, or balanced. Adding to that discomfort, I usually wear my hair down, I depend on eyeglasses frequently, and I wear dangly earrings. Those three things adversely affect the overall fit of a headset like the Oasis.
The Motorola Oasis ($79.99) isn't the best headset we've tested, or even the best Motorola headset we've tested - that would still be the Motorola Endeavor HX1 ($59.99, 4 stars). But the brand new Oasis reminds us of a miniaturized Plantronics Voyager Pro ($99.99, 4 stars), and manages to be just as comfortable without being quite so large. While its design is certainly intriguing, the execution leaves something to be desired. The Oasis measures 2.0 by 1.7 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs half an ounce. It's made of a combination of glossy and matte plastics, and soft-touch rubber for the part that fits around the ear. The magnetized swivel hinge actually works two ways: the mic boom folds in so that you can pocket the headset without it catching on anything, and the ear tip swings around so you can convert it for either the left ear or right ear. On top is a hardware power switch, while the mic boom contains the main call button, which seemed awkward but was actually fine in daily use. The rubberized back edge contains a mute button, a welcome pair of dedicated volume buttons, and a covered microUSB charger port. The Oasis was comfortable to wear. The default ear tip fit well, and Motorola includes two other sizes in the box.
