OverviewThis time last year - when the Tablet P wasn't even a twinkle in Sony's eye - we were weeping into a mound of rubbish iPad rip-offs, begging for sweet release from our tiresome lives. Every week we saw yet more rectangular lumps of plastic, fit only for use as door wedges. They ran outdated versions of Google's Android operating system, designed for the humble smartphone, so the blocky desktops and stretched-out apps looked truly horrendous. But just as we were headed to the bathtub with our toasters, two miraculous things happened. First, Google released Android Honeycomb - a slick, tablet-oriented version of its mobile operating system. And second, manufacturers started paying attention to the slew of negative reviews and actually started producing decent devices. The excellent Sam...

Overview, Design and Feel.Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Neither. It's a tablet. Or a phone. Or both. We really don't know – but it has some of the best specs around and Samsung's hoping this will ship by the bucketload. The Samsung Galaxy Note is a phone / tablet hybrid that doesn't really sit in any category - we've reviewed it as a smartphone simply due to the fact it can make calls, but Samsung is definitely trying to create a new category of device with this 5.3-inch screened behemoth. It's funny how mobile trends can change. Just because Google has updated the platform doesn’t mean that every device maker will be able to get an update to every phone in short order; or at all. That’s why Motorola’s new statement via Twitter is so surprising. In a series of Tweets, the OEM has confirmed that 6 weeks after the code is available, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be in the hands of some Moto users. After a little clarification, Motorola has confirmed that there will be updates for three devices in the specified time frame. The devices called out are the Droid RAZR, Bionic, and Xoom tablet. At that point, the company says it will make a decision on other devices. We would be surprised if other phones like the Droid X2 and Photon 4G don’t al...

Hands on Motorola Razr review: HandlingMotorola has stayed true to its roots with its latest release – the Motorola Razr. Named after the popular clamshell handset which was released back in 2004, Moto is relying on seven years of brand building in the hope that its newest handset can compete against a new wave of smartphones – including the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Nexus. When it comes to looks, the Motorola Razr is nothing like its past namesake. Moto has dropped the clamshell look for a chassis that's ultra-thin – it's a mere 7.1mm. Motorola is claiming this makes it the thinnest smartphone in the world and we are not going to argue. In the flesh, it is positively waif-like. It's dexterous enough, though, to not feel like you are going to snap the thing.Looks-wise, Moto ha...

With so many manufacturers trying to emulate the iPad's sleek black bezel and paper-thin form factor, it's good to see a tablet that's a little different once in a while. Enter the Packard Bell Liberty Tab, available in cherry-red or brown with a stylish chrome frame and Android 3.0 Honeycomb under the hood. Anyone familiar with an Android smartphone will start to feel at home with the Liberty Tab very quickly. There are five separate homescreens, all fully customisable with widgets and applications. Swiping between the different homescreens is fast and responsive and a quick tap of the capacitive, multi-touch screen will open applications promptly. Samsung has announced that it is releasing the Bada 2.0 development kit to app makers, with three new Wave smartphones set to launch before the year is out. Bada 2.0 brings multitasking, Wi-Fi Direct, near field communications (NFC) and voice recognition with it, as well as support for Flash and HTML5 web browsing and apps. The three new Wave smartphones, of which we'd expect at least one to make it to the UK, will launch with Bada 2.0 and range from premium to entry-level standards. Long time comingThe last we heard of Bada 2.0 was at the tail end of 2010 when Samsung showed off the OS for the first time. The company also managed to launch the Samsung Wave 578 at this year's Mobile World Congress and although the handset offered NFC, it was languishing on Bada 1.1. The release of the SDK a...

Microsoft has confirmed that new Windows Phone handsets 7 that launch with the imminent Mango software will feature front-facing cameras and Skype integration. The revelation came at New Zealand's TechEd event, from where the official NZ Windows Phone account tweeted:"Nice, they just confirmed at TechEd NZ that #WP7 devices with forward-facing cameras are coming with Mango - and Skype will support it." New toyIt's not clear if the Skype integration will land at the same time as the Mango update itself (for which the good money is on a 1 September launch) or if it'll be a separate app or a future update. But what is fairly safe to assume is that a number of the new batch of Windows Phone 7 handsets, if not all, will come with video-call-friendly front-mounted cameras. So, we're lock...

Sony Ericsson has unveiled the Xperia Neo V ahead of IFA 2011, following its moderately successful Xperia Neo handset that was released early this year. There's not much to report on the Neo V front; it's largely the same handset as the original Neo - same dimensions, same weight, same display, same innards. The one major change that we can see is that the Neo V comes rocking a 5MP camera, a step down from the 8MP affair that the older handset boasts. Considering the "photographic punch" was one of the things we praised in our Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo review, chopping this down may not have been Sony Ericsson's wisest ever move. Verizon is known to do this before a product is released, though the pages currently do not list any accessories for either device. We hope that there are no more delays, and that the DROID BIONIC and XOOM 4G LTE are released soon.

Google buying Motorola Mobility, the handset arm of Moto, caught everyone by surprise, but it was quickly assumed to be about the search giant suiting up for the imminent patent war.And that's really what it's all about - Android is crucial to Google as a future cash stream as we increasingly stuff more portable devices into our bag. However there's a more pressing question on the minds of consumers: what will this mean for actual devices? As the news of the announcement broke, many questioned why Google didn't pick up a more popular brand - HTC would be the obvious choice, given its close links to the formation of Android and escalating prominence.Patents aside (the Taiwanese firm holds far fewer than Moto) it still wouldn't make sense for Google to pick up the firm.
