We review the Android powered Cliq XT which subtracts the keyboard and some bulk from Motorola's original Cliq.During the course of this review, we'll be discussing varying advanced aspects of the Motorola Cliq XT from T-Mobile, such its social networked music player, its Swype texting capability, its iPhone-like pinch-and-zoom photo gallery capabilities, and more. But none of these really matters. The Android-powered Cliq XT, an update of last fall's Cliq, is aimed at a specific customer: the social networker, some whom spend most of their mobile day reporting every moment of their earthly existence (or commenting on other's banal blow-by-blow) on Facebook, texting friends, sending pictures, and updating their blogs. For these folks, the Cliq XT's otherwise unique collection of functions aren't necessarily superfluous, but certainly won't be primary purchase factors. But XT's other social networking features may make it attractive even to casual Twitterers.Like the original Cliq (for simplicity sake, hereafter referred to as C1), XT runs Motorola's Motoblur, Motorola's innovative (and still unmatched) social networking aggregation interface.
We've witnessed Motorola come back strong and hard in the US with its line of QWERTY packing Android phones, but they've been silent in the touchscreen only department. Following the same path as the Motorola CLIQ on T-Mobile, the latest Android handset from the veteran phone manufacturer takes everything we love about that handset and removes its QWERTY keyboard. Essentially coming up the Motorola CLIQ XT that sports the social networking happy MOTOBLUR interface. Even though it may have some close ties to its older sibling, the Motorola CLIQ XT looks to attract customers with its slimmer design and hopefully more complete interface. The package contains:• Motorola CLIQ XT• USB Cable• 2GB microSD card pre-installed• Charger• Hands-free HeadsetIt's almost hard to imagine unless you see it for yourself, but the Motorola CLIQ XT is both longer (4.59”) and wider (2.34”) than the CLIQ; except in the thickness department where it would naturally be smaller (0.48”). The candybar style phone uses a two tone color scheme that's traditionally used a lot – the textured black plastic of the front and back mixes well with the often used chrome bezel. It's not the prettiest thing out there, but differentiates itself enough from the CLIQ.
March MotoBlur madness is upon us: The Cliq XT (pricing to be announced from T-Mobile, which also hosts the Cliq) is Motorola's third MotoBlur phone to touch down on a carrier this month, along with the Backflip (AT&T) and the Devour (Verizon). The Cliq XT is the only MotoBlur phone that lacks a full QWERTY keyboard. Though I missed having a physical keyboard, the Cliq XT made up for its absence with the full-featured Connected Music Player, which combines a handful of excellent music services in a single seamless interface. The Cliq XT's drab gray and chrome color scheme doesn't make it the most eye-catching phone on the block, but it is very comfortable to hold, thanks to a slim, light body; rounded corners; and a textured rubber back. Measuring 2.3 by 4.6 by 0.5 inches and weighing just 4.6 ounces, the Cliq XT is certainly the most pocketable of the MotoBlur phones (chiefly because it lacks a QWERTY keyboard). The 3.1-inch display is a bit small by today's smartphone standards, though it matches the size (and at 320 by 480 pixels, the resolution) of the other MotoBlur phones' screens. Colors looked bright and accurate, but the display falls short of those on top smartphones such as the Droid.
Announced at Mobile World Congress 2010, the Motorola Cliq XT is Moto's fifth Android offering in the United States and T-Mobile's fifth overall. Some might be quick to dismiss the XT as a slight revamp of the Motorola Cliq, but we think that's a bit of a disservice to the device. After all, it offers a sleeker design with a capable onscreen keyboard courtesy of Swype, a more full-featured and connected media player, and thankfully better performance than the Motorola Backflip. That's not to say that the Cliq XT doesn't have issues. The screen size is on the smaller side and it only runs Android 1.5, but we found much more to like than dislike about the Cliq XT. It's a nice alternative for customers who want something sleeker than the Cliq and can do without a physical keyboard, but this is all contingent on pricing. As of this writing, T-Mobile has not released pricing or a specific availability date for the Motorola Cliq XT, though we do know it will be sometime in March. The Moto Cliq currently goes for $149.99 with a two-year contract, so if the XT is similarly priced or lower ($99.99 would be the sweet spot), we think it'll be a good choice for social networking and music fans.
