Magellan RoadMate 9055-LM

The RoadMate 9055-LM starts, like most PNDs, with a touch screen. Only instead of a 3.5- or 5-inch display, the RoadMate 9055-LM boasts a massive 7-inch screen (measured diagonally). Magellan markets the RoadMate 9055-LM to owners of big trucks and RVs and you may be thinking that a screen so large is probably overkill for the average passenger car -- that certainly was my first thought upon attaching the RoadMate 9055-LM to the windshield of our tiny 2007 Chevrolet Aveo test car. However, after a bit of adjustment of the PND's mounting arm, I found that the extra square inches of real estate really could be helpful in a passenger car. Massive screen aside, the RoadMate 9055-LM isn't dramatically different from your standard Magellan navigator. Look closely at the device's glossy black bezel and you'll find the pinhole opening for the device's microphone. Along the top edge is a power switch that gives users manual control over activating and deactivating the unit. The unit's power can also be automatically controlled by the USB power connection located on the bottom edge of the RoadMate 9055-LM unit -- plugging in to power causes the unit to spring to life and disconnecting brings up an onscreen prompt that give users 10 seconds to decide to operate on battery power before automatically powering off.

Magellan RoadMate 9055 GPS

In the competitive market of GPS units Magellan has made itself a household name and in this review we cover the latest product from Magellan called the 9055. In two words “BIG Screen.” The 9055 has the very noticeable (as stated by on lookers “I can read the screen from my driver’s seat” -from the guy in the car to my left while sitting at a stop light. Those of you who are looking for a GPS with a slightly bigger screen than the average 3.5” or 4” screen the 9055 maybe right up your alley with a 7″. Lets take a look at what the Magellan 9055 has to offer. The RoadMate 9055 is a GPS that dwarfs many other competitors due to the sheer size of the display. Now the RoadMate 9055 is just big on size, but also additional features like Bluetooth for speakerphone calling. Other than extremely LARGE screen the Magellan RoadMate 9055 comes packed with a very handy mounting bracket which is unlike any other. The bracket consists of a long primary arm to bridge the dash of most vehicles today (some cars with extremely big windshield may find it difficult to mount the bracket and not obstruct the drivers view of the road.

Magellan RoadMate 9055

If you've ever envied luxury cars, with their big, built-in LCDs for GPS navigation, the 7-inch Magellan RoadMate 9055 may be just what you need to cure your lust. MiTac International has taken its existing RoadMate 1700 ($299.99, 3.5 stars), which we reviewed back in 2009, and added real-time traffic reports, a Bluetooth hands-free mode, and support for an upcoming remote back-up camera (due for release this spring) all for the same $300 price. Some perennial Magellan issues persist in the RoadMate 9055, but even so, this is one 7-inch GPS device is a good value and a pleasure to use. The all-plastic RoadMate 9055 measures 4.5 by 7.5 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 7.8 ounces. The smoother, more rounded look isn't just an illusion; the new model knocks almost three ounces off the weight, although it's approximately the same size otherwise. The 800-by-480-pixel, 7-inch plastic resistive LCD looks bright and crisp, and Magellan tuned the screen well: In my tests, I never had to touch a button twice in order to trigger it, and the size of the user interface elements made it easy to press the right thing. On back, an A/V input lets you plug in a portable video player to use the RoadMate 9055 as a 7-inch LCD.
