Compared with the 3.5-inch screen size standard of older personal navigation devices, as well as current entry-level devices, today's 4.3-inch and 5-inch units seem downright huge. More screen real estate means easier viewing and faster data inputs. However, the Magellan RoadMate 1700's 7-inch wide-screen display dwarfs them all. Is this too much of a good thing? The RoadMate 1700 looks a lot like every other RoadMate that we've tested, until you put it side by side with any other GPS device on the market. Its 7-inch wide screen seems freakishly large compared with the usual 3.5 inch and 4.3 inch PND screens. However, while the 1700 is much taller and wider, the device is also one of the thinnest PNDs we've tested. Like nearly all PNDs, the majority of the RoadMate's visage is occupied by color touch screen, but there are a few physical interfaces to be found. Along the unit's top edge is the power switch. This slider has settings for on, off, and reset. When powering the unit off, you are presented with a 10 second countdown and the option return the slider to On or shutdown immediately. If no option is chosen, then the shutdown is completed.

If your vehicle can accommodate a GPS device with an enormous 7-inch screen, the RoadMate will prove to be a worthwhile travel companion. If you're looking for a portable GPS navigation device with a mammoth screen, Magellan's new RoadMate 1700 ($300, as of November 4, 2009) could be just the thing. Measuring 7.5 by 4.2 by 0.6 inches and weighing in at a hefty 10.7 ounces, the 1700 is big enough to pack a gigantic 7-inch screen. Bigger is not always better, though. In a large vehicle, such as an RV or a truck, the RoadMate 1700 is probably the perfect size, as the distance between the driver and the GPS is greater than in an automobile. In my Camry, though, the 1700 took up too much dashboard space and, depending on the mounting location, created distracting blind spots. The RoadMate 1700 includes many of the features you'd expect to find in a premium GPS. It includes maps for the United States (all 50 states), Canada, and Puerto Rico. Maps for Mexico are preinstalled, but you have to purchase an activation key ($50) to use them. The device also includes a robust database of 6 million points of interest, along with the AAA Tourbook, and supports multidestination routing.
