LG Spectrum LTE Smartphone Review

LG and Verizon Wireless have brought the same display technology used in LG's premium HD televisions to a new smartphone dubbed the Spectrum. Featuring a 4.5-inch True HD IPS display and a resolution of 1280x720, the LG Spectrum uses Real Stripe subpixel arrangement which LG says is denser and 1.4 times sharper than the PenTile subpixel arrangement used on Super AMOLED displays. The phone's display features a screen density of 329 pixels per inch to provide a sharp, crisp picture that shows fine details. The LG Spectrum features a Qualcomm 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor and connects to Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network. The phone also supports 4G mobile hotspot capabilities for up to ten devices, provided you pay for the option to use this feature. The Spectrum currently runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), though Verizon Wireless has said this phone will be receiving an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). This update is expected to be available in the first half of 2012. For sports fans, the Spectrum also provides exclusive HD access to the ESPN ScoreCenter application. This app provides ScoreCenter stats, images and videos in 720p HD quality. You can also access scoreboards and live game details such as in-game stats, news, and video from the application.

LG Spectrum Review

Now that the busy holiday season is behind us, there’s no arguing that Verizon had plenty of juicy second-generation 4G LTE smartphones for its customers – with each offering its own unique aspects to lure in people. One might’ve easily noticed LG’s absence, which is rather surprising considering that the Korean based company is a force to be reckoned with. Well, it’s better late than never, right? Just like its rivals before it, the LG Spectrum is stuffed with all of the lovable qualities of a contemporary high-end Android smartphone. However, will it have enough allure to rise over some of the benchmarking devices we’ve seen already? Or will it simply left out to dry for its late arrival onto the scene?Hardly attempting to differentiate itself from its previous offerings in the LG Optimus LTE (Korean model) and LG Nitro HD (AT&T), the LG Spectrum follows forth with a very familiar, yet bland looking design. In fact, the only major thing new is its glossy and smooth plastic back cover, which so happens to be notorious for accumulating fingerprints – and worse yet, it’s much more prone to scratching versus the textured cover on the Nitro HD. Still, it’s pretty skinny (0.42” thick) and lightweight (4.99 oz) by today’s standards, but more importantly, it doesn’t feel as overbearing to hold in the hand.

LG Spectrum review

LG’s play for US smartphone market share is simple: bring over the popular Optimus LTE from Europe, and tweak it for different carriers. The $199.99 (with a two-year contract) LG Spectrum for Verizon is the second such handset, after the Nitro HD for AT&T. When I reviewed the Nitro, I called it the best LTE phone available on AT&T, and the Spectrum is every bit as good on paper: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch IPS display, LTE connectivity, and an 8-megapixel camera. But the handset competition on Verizon’s LTE network is considerably tougher than on AT&T, with the Galaxy Nexus, Droid RAZR (and RAZR Maxx) and HTC Rezound stocking Big Red’s shelves. Can LG’s flagship phone jump into a more competitive ring and hold its own? Read on for the full review. Video Review Hardware / design The Spectrum is enormous. That comes with having a 4.5-inch display, of course, but it's the same size as the Galaxy Nexus (a hair thicker, and slightly lighter), even though the Nexus has a bigger screen. A hefty chunk of the Spectrum's 5.33-inch height is due to the three capacitive buttons below the display (the menu and search buttons are combined into one), real estate the Nexus doesn't need because Android 4.0 uses on-screen capacitive buttons.

Spectrum by LG Review

Welcome to Verizon's most high-definition LTE device on the market right now, the Spectrum by LG, complete with a massive True HD IPS display at 4.5-inches and 720 x 1280 pixels. It's certainly not a short device, made to fit in the palm of your adult-sized hand and weigh in at next to nothing (142g) as it shows off its fabulously bright front and powerfully backed-up interior with its dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm. Is this the nicest LTE device on the market today? While LG does still have one of my favorite devices ever in the G2X released last year, this device feels a bit large for the average citizen. Certainly consider whether you need all the extra space in this gigantic four and half inch display before you go purchasing it, especially since your thumb wont be able to reach the other end of your screen without assistance of your other hand. When playing games and watching video though, this display is top of class. The camera also has us dazzled and is certainly up there in the top 10 cameras thus produced on a smartphone. The onboard speaker system is fairly excellent, though still pointing out the back of the device as too many smartphones and tablets these days are, still working perfectly well if you've got it up against a wall from whens it can reflect.

LG Spectrum Review

Verizon Wireless customers now have an embarrassment of HD riches. The $199 LG Spectrum joins the HTC Rezound, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the LG Nitro in that carrier's stable of smartphones with mammoth 4.5-inch 720p displays. The Spectrum hopes to stand out in that high-def crowd with an IPS screen that boasts a brightness of 500 nits and the type of color accuracy usually reserved for TVs. Plus, the Spectrum offers exclusive access to HD content in the ESPN ScoreCenter app, making this phone a tempting choice for sports fans. Read on to find out whether LG's latest superphone is worth cheering for.Click to EnlargeMeasuring 5.3 x 2.7 x 0.4 inches, the LG Spectrum is yet another megaphone; it's even about a quarter of an inch longer than the Nitro HD, and at 5 ounces, makes the 4.5-ounce Nitro seem light by comparison (The HTC Rezound is an even heavier 6 ounces). Unlike the Nitro HD and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, both of whose top and bottom edges are curved, the Spectrum has a more squared-off design, more akin to the HTC Rezound. And yet, for its size, the Spectrum feels like another me-too device.

LG Spectrum

There are several themes that came out of CES 2012, where Verizon first showed off the LG Spectrum, one of its latest 4G LTE superphones. LTE was one of these themes, of course, and the Spectrum delivers. HD, as in high-definition video, was another. Like the LG Nitro HD, the Spectrum has a terrific 4.5-inch HD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, and an 8-megapixel camera with support for 1080p video recording. There's also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and the phone runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. In addition to the HD screen and video recording, several applications on the phone are automatically optimized for HD playback, including Netflix and ESPN Sports Center. LG has taken some risks with its custom interface design, and not all the pieces fit together. I found call quality and camera performance were also variable. Overall, the Spectrum is a beautiful device that belongs in the same league as Verizon's heavy hitters, and the $199.99 price tag will help nudge fence-sitters in LG's direction. As nice as the Nitro HD was, the Spectrum's clean, lean design, a successor to last year's LG Revolution, appeals to me more.
