LG Rumor Touch

Now that Sprint owns Virgin Mobile, it's no surprise that a few of Sprint's phones have made it to the prepaid carrier's lineup. The LG Rumor Touch is one such device, and while the hardware remains the same, the Rumor Touch is now available for $149.99 without a contract for Virgin Mobile customers who like going the prepaid route. The only difference between the Sprint and Virgin Mobile models lies in their respective services. The Virgin Mobile version doesn't have Sprint Music or Sprint TV, and offers Virgin Mobile Navigator instead of Sprint Navigator for maps and turn-by-turn direction. Because the phones are identical, we'll point you to our review of the LG Rumor Touch for Sprint for most of the design and features. As for applications and games, the LG Rumor Touch for Virgin Mobile comes with Midnight Bowling 2, Tetris, Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man, Google Maps, Email + IM, and Opera Mini. In this review, we'll focus on just call quality and performance. We tested the LG Rumor Touch in San Francisco using Virgin Mobile.

LG Rumor Touch

The LG Rumor Touch looks very different than the prior Rumor ($49, ) and Rumor2 ($49, ). While all three are horizontal sliders, the Rumor Touch finally gives you the best of both worlds: an expansive 3-inch touch screen, and a slide-out, QWERTY keyboard. It's not even that heavy, either. With a solid design, decent camera, and built-in Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter support, it's a huge improvement on the disappointing Rumor2, and it wins our Editors' Choice award for Sprint feature phones. It's ideal for messaging fiends who don't want to upgrade to the full smartphone experience. The Rumor Touch measures 4.2 by 2.2 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.7 ounces. It's fashioned in black plastic with a sharp-looking, dark blue accent line around the sides. A red version, complete with a red keyboard instead of a black one, is on the way. The soft-touch back panel felt durable, and the sliding mechanism felt solid. The 240-by-400-pixel, plastic resistive touch screen was reasonably accurate. Dialing wasn't tough, although I had to slow down to avoid missed numbers. The roomy, five-row QWERTY keyboard was arranged well and was comfortable to use in practice, although the keys were a little slippery and tough to press.

LG Rumor Touch

Long before messaging phones became a trend, LG has been making feature phones with full QWERTY keyboards. Verizon has its line of Voyager and enV handsets, while Sprint has the LG Rumor and the subsequent LG Rumor 2. While they made decent messaging phones, the previous Rumor handsets were more for the entry-level consumer due to their basic feature sets. The LG Rumor Touch changes all that, however--it is the first touch-screen phone to bear the Rumor branding, and it carries a slew of improved features. Not only that, but the Rumor Touch carries a unique user interface that seems tailor made for sending and receiving text messages. Its impressive feature set includes a 2.0-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headset jack, GPS, and EV-DO Rev. 0. The Rumor Touch is available now for $79.99 with a new two-year service agreement with Sprint. Design When we first saw the LG Rumor Touch at CES 2010, we'll admit we were slightly underwhelmed. The design just reminded us so much of the LG Xenon that we were hard-pressed to be excited about it. Looking at it now however, we see it is actually not too bad. Measuring 4.2 inches long by 2.2 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick, the Rumor Touch has a straightforward rectangular shape with slightly curved sides and a soft touch back cover.
