PRADA Phone 3.0 by LG Review

Are you a trend-setter, a dedicated follower, or a fashion disaster? That's the question we've been asking of the PRADA Phone 3.0 by LG, the phone company's third attempt at a handset suitable for the catwalk, and the first to legitimately fall under the smartphone banner. Running Android with a custom UI in Anna Wintour's favorite color scheme, the new PRADA handset is hoping to appeal to fashionistas and geeks in equal measure, but is it truly bespoke, merely off the peg, or a thrift-store special? Read on for the SlashGear review. Mention PRADA and distinctive design is not far behind: the fashion house has a reputation for sex appeal and unusual cuts in its clothing lines, and translating that to technology is a challenge. LG has opted for the slick, contemporary feel of a PRADA accessory - think man-purse or watch - and so the third-gen phone gets sharp edges, slices of metal and leather-style finish. Note we say leather-style: the textured back panel of the PRADA Phone 3.0 is indeed plastic molded to look and, to a minor extent, feel like hide. LG tells us that's because real leather could warp or be otherwise marred in daily use, though leather wallets (or indeed cows) don't seem to necessarily suffer such a fate.

LG Prada Phone 3.0 review

The original Prada Phone, LG would have us believe, was the inspiration for the iPhone. Just four months after LG won the iF Design award for its groundbreaking design, Steve Jobs took to the stage at Macworld and turned the entire industry on its head. There were similarities between the two devices, but while both had touch-based UIs, capacitive displays, and strong black bezels, there was a key difference: software. Whereas the iPhone introduced the world to pinch-to-zoom, Google Maps integration, and desktop-quality web browsing, the Prada ran a Flash-based OS that looked great, but accomplished very little. The Prada Phone 3.0 is LG's attempt to finally nullify that disparity. LG has traded in the original Prada UI for Android 2.3, making this the first true modern smartphone in the line. But its 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage don’t exactly set the heart racing. When coupled with an out-of-date OS and a tired 4.3-inch WVGA display, the Prada 3 simply can’t match the current pack of smartphones vying for your attention, on paper at least. Instead, LG is hedging its bets on a collaboration with design house Prada swinging the tables in its favor.

LG Prada Phone review

The third LG Prada Phone -- or to use its preposterously long name, the Prada Phone by LG 3.0 -- is the Italian fashion label's third collaboration with the Korean electronics manufacturer. It's a hoity-toity mobile with decent specs, but is it worth £430?The price of the LG Prada Phone puts it in the same league as lots of high-end powerhouses such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple's iPhone 4S, as well as newer phones such as the Sony Xperia S and HTC's quad-core beast, the One X. So how does it measure up? The LG Prada Phone is available from £21 on a 24-month contract. With a 1GHz dual-core chip, a beautiful 4.3-inch screen and an update to the latest Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, promised at some point soon, the LG Prada Phone is as respectable a choice as any other decent Android phone. But if you're interested in this mobile over others, it's likely you will have been drawn to it by its fashion design and branding. As phones and tech companies increasingly gain cult followings of their own, mobiles sporting fashion labels or car logos, which were once the status symbols of consumer tech products, seem to be less relevant.

Phone Reviews: Mobiles and Smartphones

Is it going to be third time for lucky for LG in its partnership with Prada? The LG Prada 3.0 is a new Android 2.3 smartphone that's billed as a combination of a full feature list with an ultra-stylish design. But what's it like in reality? Have the duo managed to make a 'designer' smartphone that doesn't cut corners on performance? Let's take a closer look ... The sleek exterior respects the aesthetics of the classic Italian couturier, but the back is covered with plastic imitation leather. It's a shame that the luxury element hasn't been taken further by using real leather instead ... LG has included an MHL-compatible micro-USB port that means you can enjoy content from your phone on your TV, as well as a headphone jack at the top. We first saw the Nova display on the LG Optimus Black last year, but here, at 4.3'', the resolution of 480 x 800 pixels seems a little stingy. Despite this, the display quality is acceptable, although you can't get away with browsing the web for very long before you have to zoom in. Again, we're disappointed that LG didn't do any better than that. The lab results were otherwise positive, with a decent contrast ratio (950:1), despite a slight blue tinge dragging the deltaE score up to 6.4 (a perfect display has a score below 3.0 on this test).

Prada Phone by LG 3.0 Review

Mobile technology is so good these days that it takes quite a bit of effort to make an Android phone that stands out from the crowd. LG has tried its best by bringing on board fashion great Prada to wave its magic wand over the style and design of its latest Android handset. Now it's not the first time that the two companies have joined together – nor the first time a designer label has got in on the act with a mobile phone – but what's different here is that it is not overly-logoed – nor has it been priced at some eye-watering level. In fact it's safe to say that compared with some of the other handsets to have come out of LG's stables in the past year (the Optimus Black and the Optimus 3D to name but two), this Prada handset is probably one of the best LG handsets we've seen for some time. This Prada Phone By LG 3.0 is one of the slimmest smarties around – it measures just 8.5mm – and it has an understated style that makes it really stand out from the Android crowd, and looks pretty classy too. If you know your fashion, you'll notice Prada has added its Saffiano signature to the reverse of the phone. This phone really lives up to its quality name – it feels good as well as looking stylish – unlike the lightweight Samsung Galaxy S II.

LG Prada 3.0: Slim fit

It's slim and smart, and wears Prada. This little devil is too sexy to hang out with the other droids. It puts on its evening shoes and goes to town. It hates being chased by paparazzi but always turns its better side to the cameras. We'll see what the other droids think about that. And by other droids we don't mean a certain Armani-clad Samsung Galaxy S. We're talking about some pretty scary dual-core smartphones with massive screens and the latest in connectivity, imaging and entertainment. We're looking at the third phone designed by Prada and built by LG. And it's only the first smartphone to come out of this partnership. LG and Prada go back a long way and their latest creation isn't supposed to be just another Android smartphone. With Prada kindly supplying the glitz, the thrills are entirely on LG. They've made sure the LG Prada 3.0 gets nothing short of a flagship treatment. Leading the long list of features is a 4.3" NOVA display, which pumps out 800-nits of brightness. There's a 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor ticking inside and RAM aplenty. An 8MP auto-focus camera and full HD video earn the LG Prada extra points.

LG Prada 3.0 review

LG and Prada have history. Back in 2007 the pair got together and spawned a mobile phone called, well, the LG Prada. Two years later, there was a second outing, in the shape of the LG KF900 Prada. Almost like clockwork - albeit a rather slow clock - two years later and we have a third LG Prada handset, the PRADA Phone by LG 3.0. We know, the name PRADA Phone by LG 3.0 doesn't really trip off the tongue, does it? We're going to call it the LG Prada 3.0 like, we suspect, most will do.Obviously, the LG Prada 3.0 has a lot of emphasis on stylish hardware design. There's also a rather nifty interface skin that's been applied to Android 2.3, and the general specs aren't too shabby either. At first glance, this is a handset that ticks a lot of boxes. Dig deep, and we find there is a little bit of style over substance creeping in. But we'll come to that. The Prada Phone by LG 3.0 is a big, really neatly designed handset. With a 4.3-inch screen and seriously big top and bottom screen bezels, this is a sizable phone for your pocket. Most people will have trouble reaching across the screen for one-handed use. The all-black front hides four application shortcut buttons that are briefly lit up when you press the area below the screen. It's one of two usability annoyances that these buttons don't stay backlit for very long.

LG Prada 3.0 Review

The year is 1913. Italian enterprenours Mario and Martino Prada start a new leathergoods shop, called Fratelli Prada (meaning Prada Brothers), in Milan. Initially, their operations centered around selling of various leather goods, as well as imported English steamer trunks and handbags. Little did the Prada brothers know that their undertaking was going to become what's one of the leading fashion houses of today, with a total revenue of €2.15 billion for 2010, and 2,841 employees around the world as of 2011. Today, Prada's business model focuses on selling luxury goods, such as various leather accessories, shues, hats and luggage.Being the adventurous type, Prada would sometimes venture out of its traditional fields to deliver something fresh and different to its loyal customers. 2007 was the perfect time for a foray in the booming cell phone market. However, since the company could't tell a transistor from a chip, it needed to partner with a veteran phone maker, in order to produce its new offering – the Prada phone. Eventually, it would end up having LG on board for the project. In early 2007, the duo unveiled the original LG Prada phone, which quickly gained popularity, due to it being one of the very first handsets equipped with a capacitive touchscreen.

LG Prada Phone

The third LG Prada Phone -- or to use its slightly ridiculous full name, the Prada Phone by LG 3.0 -- took to the catwalk at its launch last night, dazzling the crowd with a gleaming screen and high-fashion Italian glamour. LG and Prada first released a phone together in 2007, and the mobile phone market has changed significantly since their last outing -- the LG Prada 2 KF900 in 2009. But they've proved themselves to be a wily, forward-thinking pair in the past, so we had high hopes for their latest release. We've gone hands-on with the Prada Phone and are pleased to see from the svelte design, 4.3-inch touchscreen and decent specs, that they've attempted to create a genuinely competitive product for the smart phone market. We're all the more pleased when we compare it with many of the fashion phone shockers and crystal-studded lightweights that come through our doors. We could stroke the lovely textured pattern all day long. The Prada Phone is running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and an Ice Cream Sandwich update has been confirmed for next year. The phone will be released first in western Europe and South Korea, with a January launch date set for the UK. Prices and specific dates have yet to be fixed, but LG has said that it is currently negotiating with all major UK networks.
