LG Optimus S Review

An unlimited, contract-free smartphone plan for $19 a month? Sounds too good to be true, but that's the promise from Republic Wireless, a new hybrid cellular/VoIP carrier from Bandwidth.com. You dish out $199 for an LG Optimus S Android phone upfront (the only model offered on the network right now), then sign up for its cheap monthly service. In return, Republic Wireless gives you an all-you-can-eat buffet of unlimited calls, texts and data. The catch? Republic Wireless assumes you'll be connected to a Wi-Fi network for most of the day, only using a cell network as backup. The service is still in beta (and trial slots are currently full), but Republic Wireless will supposedly let folks in by mid-2012. When it does, should you sign up for this ultra-low rate? Read on.Although it's a budget smartphone, the LG Optimus S doesn't feel chintzy. It has a sturdy, candy bar build that feels good to hold. Charcoal gray with a rubberized, soft-touch finish and rounded edges, the Optimus S has a simple, unassuming look. (There's a purple model of the device, too, but Republic Wireless offers only the gray one.) Its 3.2-inch LCD is on the small side compared with many of today's 4.3-inch and larger Android handsets.

LG Optimus S

Republic Wireless, a new cell phone carrier startup from VoIP provider Bandwidth.com, is offering what seems like an unbeatable bargain: $199 for an LG Optimus S smartphone up front, plus $19 per month for unlimited voice calls, period. The catch: You must use Wi-Fi networks as your primary means of calling, with cellular available as a backup. Unfortunately, the reality of this plan doesn't measure up to the promise—at least not yet. The TechnologyRepublic Wireless is an MVNO, but one based around Wi-Fi instead of cellular; rather than using cellular as the base network, with wireless hotspots as a fallback, Republic Wireless takes the opposite approach. Combining Wi-Fi and cellular calls in one device isn't new. T-Mobile has been offering it for several years with its UMA-based system, on phones like the BlackBerry Curve 9360 ($49.99, 3.5 stars), although T-Mobile is GSM-based, not CDMA-based like Sprint. What confused us—and a lot of Internet pundits—from the get-go was why Sprint would let a company use its network, and then pitch itself as a cut-rate competitor to Sprint (and the other three big U.S. carriers).

LG Optimus S Review

:In this ever-increasing Android-centric smartphone landscape it is getting harder and harder to differentiate oneself. Some manufacturers are going the software route and adding custom skins to their devices. Others are taking the brute force hardware method by throwing fast processors and gobs of memory into their devices. Then there is LG, which is taking a novel approach and aiming for the low-end. The Optimus line (T-Mobile has the Optimus T and Sprint the Optimus S, Verizon has rebranded theirs the Vortex) takes square aim at the featurephone market and hits the nail squarely on the head. Included with Sprint’s LG Optimus S you will find a 2GB memory card, microUSB cable and AC adapter.LG has not strayed far from the original Optimus One design, but there are a few differences. The Optimus S is a very grey shade of blue and slathered in soft touch paint. The phone feels fantastic in your hand; it is extremely well-built, has a good weight to it and the materials are better than the $50 price point would indicate. Compared to the Sanyo Zio and even the fairly nice Samsung Transform, the LG Optimus S is easily the class leader when it comes to mid-range Android design.

LG Optimus S

Budget Android smartphones are on the rise, and you need look no further than the LG Optimus line of handsets to see that. We first saw the LG Optimus T, which was priced at $29.99 with a T-Mobile agreement, and then we found out you can get the the black version for free under contract. The LG Optimus S for Sprint may not be quite so cheap, but it's still pretty affordable. It has many of the same features as the Optimus T--it ships with Android 2.2, has Wi-Fi, 3G, and it can act as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. The Optimus S is also one of a few phones to support Sprint's new Sprint ID Packs, which lets you customize the phone with certain personality profiles. The LG Optimus S is available for $49.99 with a new two-year contract from Sprint. When we first saw the LG Optimus S, we thought we were looking at a clone of the LG Optimus T. Indeed, the two phones are very similar, not just in terms of features, but also in design. Both phones measure 4.47 inches long by 2.32 inches wide by 0.52 inch thick, and both are coated with a smooth soft-touch finish that leads to a comfortable feel in the hand. The Optimus S comes only in charcoal gray.

LG Optimus S

We've reviewed a lot of midrange Android devices here at PCMag, and most of them fall short of the mark. The $49.99 LG Optimus S has changed that. It's the first reasonably priced Android device we can wholeheartedly recommend. Even if it doesn't have high-end specs, it's ideal for anyone who wants to avoid the extra monthly charges Sprint adds to the otherwise excellent, HTC Evo 4G ($199.99, 4 stars). The Optimus S measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.6 ounces. It feels comfortable in the hand, with a tapered design and a sturdy soft touch finish in a pleasant slate gray color. Sharp silver accent lines grace the top edge and sides. The 3.2-inch glass capacitive touch screen LCD has 320-by-480-pixel resolution, which is still common for Android. The panel itself is a little small, but it was sufficiently bright, vivid, and responsive to touches. Four physical function keys rest below the screen. Typing on the on-screen keyboard was a little cramped as expected, but was fine otherwise. The Optimus S is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device. It also has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi; it connected to my own WPA2-encrypted network without issue. Voice quality was very good overall.
