LG Optimus L5 review

The LG Optimus L5 is the second of three LG Optimus smartphones that increase in specs, flanked either side by the LG Optimus L3 and LG Optimus L7. With this middle phone weighing in at around 10 (around AU$15/US$16) per month, or 140/US$190 (around AU$213) SIM-free, does it give enough bang for your buck (or punch for your pound)? You'll note straight away that the LG Optimus L5, or E610, is light, at just 125g (4.4oz) and seemingly slim, with a smooth metal edging. It's well balanced in the palm, but the plastic patterned back does lend it an air of cheapness, as well as not contributing much in the way of grip. The straight-sided design of the Optimus handsets is welcome though; a small detail that helps distinguish it slightly from the usual mid-range offerings.Inside, the LG Optimus L5 packs only a 800MHz processor, which is relatively poor compared to the 1GHz of the similarly priced HTC One V, but similar to the cheaper Nokia Lumia 610. Outside there are very few additions to the clean design. The NFC antenna, 5MP camera (plus LED flash) and speakers reside on the back of the phone. The front carries its 4-inch display, home key and soft return and menu buttons.

Phone Reviews: Mobiles and Smartphones

The Optimus L5 is the mid-range model in LG's recent Optimus L series, sandwiched between its flagship product, the Optimus L7, and the L3. The L5 has a 4-inch display, a 5 Megapixel camera, 4 GB of internal memory, an NFC chip, a processor clocked at 800 MHz and Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Is the screen anything to write home about? How about the camera and overall responsiveness? Answers and more in today's smartphone review. Like the L7, the Optimus L5 looks sort of like a thicker version of the LG Prada. It's angular with a dotted (non-slip) matte black coating and it's as sober-looking as they come (although was the glossy border really necessary?). All this gives the L5 a markedly different style from the competition, which tends toward rounded edges, all without going overboard. But then, as always, style is subjective. The finishing is generally good, with the exception of the scratch-prone screen (see below). The L5 fits nicely in the hand and, as with the L7, we appreciate the fact that the touch-sensitive keys aren't overly sensitive and don't get turned on willy nilly.

LG Optimus L5 Review

:The L series of LG are meant to be affordable, yet stylish handsets that cover the gamut of screen sizes. The Optimus L5 is the middle child in that range, with a 4” display, and the same single-core Qualcomm processor that is in the L3 and L7. Does it stand a chance against the other affordable handsets which ship with dual-core processors and better screen pixel densities nowadays? Read on the review to find out... Middle kids usually have it the worst, but the LG Optimus L5 doesn't seem to suffer from that syndrome. It is a very good size to fit well in the hand, and be easily operated with one hand, while the Optimus L3 was a little too small with its 3.2” display, and the Optimus L7 is a solid 4.3” slab. The handset is not extremely thin, but still sub-10mm, so it is comfortable to hold, and the tapered back cover has LG's typical “snake skin” pattern, thus involuntary slippage is out of the question. The design is actually pretty good for such an affordable handset, and certainly more interesting than what Samsung manages to produce in the category. The faux metal siding and the rim around the 5MP camera and LED flash on the back add a touch of pizzazz to the styling.
