The LG Optimus GT540 is LG's latest shot at an Android smartphone, and the company's second to hit the UK. The last Android offering – the inTouch Max GW620 – came with a slide-out keyboard, but this time the keyboard has gone. Aimed at the middle range market, the Optimus GT540 comes in at about £150 on PAYG and we found it free on contract for as low as £15 a month. Can it do enough to show Android off to the best of its powers, do the platform proud and please its intended market at such a low price? In terms of look and feel, the LG Optimus GT540 punches above its weight. The curvature of the top and bottom edges, and the faux brushed-metal finish look rather good. We like the waved panel where the Call, End/Power and Home buttons sit, too, as it's noticably different from the norm. When it comes to internal specs, it is worth pointing out that the LG Optimus GT540 runs Android 1.6. That makes it very out of date in terms of the Android OS, and cuts out a whole swathe of potential goodies for users – although the core of Android is here, of course.
After the popularity of the at the end of last year, the Optimus GT540 which runs Android 1.6 is designed as an accessible smartphone giving easy access to social networks. So: is the Korean manufacturer's second attempt at an Android handset, which has more than a passing resemblance to its , any good? The Optimus does remind us of the Viewty, and its combination of curves, a relatively slimline from and a reasonable weight (115 g) make it a pleasure to handle. The whole thing is made of plastic, but the brushed aluminium effect looks great. At first sight, the Optimus looks like it might seduce plenty of users ... But after using it for a couple of weeks, we changed our minds because the screen didn't manage to stand up to spending a while in the bottom of a large bag. It was covered in scratches but the rest of the case was still in perfect condition. We dread to think what it will look like in a month's time ... While we're on the subject of the 320 x 480 pixel touchscreen, LG has once again used resistive technology and it's quite frankly mediocre. We've seen both more reactive and more accurate screens elsewhere, which is a big problem when your phone has an all-touchscreen interface. The colours and contrast really couldn't be worse.
The Optimus is LG's second Android phone, after the GW620 InTouch Max, and will go some way towards cementing the manufacturer's reputation as the go-to provider of budget Android handsets. There's no slide-out QWERTY keyboard here as there was on the InTouch Max. The LG Optimus is primarily controlled using the three-inch screen, except for the call, home and call end buttons and side buttons. The LG Optimus most resembles LG's Viewty Smart, with rounded edges that look pretty and feel good in the hand. It's slender and light too. Between the hard keys and screen sit two touch-sensitive virtual keys: menu and back. Unfortunately they don't work too well here: we had to adjust our thumb position and press several times to make sure our commands were recognised. The touch-screen itself, though, is pretty good, despite being resistive instead of the superior capacitive model found on more expensive handsets. It's responsive, though, with fluid finger navigation. In fact, if we're going to nitpick, it's almost too responsive – once or twice we found ourselves hitting hyperlinks when we only wanted to scroll through a page.
LG has been relatively quiet on the Android market. We have already reviewed its first device with Google's mobile OS, the GW620, and were left with rather mixed feelings. The LG Optimus GT540 is the second smartphone with the platform by the manufacturer, and it comes in a quite futuristic form, kind of reminding us of the Batmobile. However, functionality and experience quality often come first in the users' wish lists. Get ready to see if the Optimus GT540 will ultimately rise victorious like a true Optimus Prime, or will eventually fall in the battle for the love of customers. There's no doubt that the LG Optimus GT540 has some distinct Transformers-like looks, due to the specific curves of the top and bottom. The handset is by no means among the smallest ones, but feels very natural in the hand. It can be easily operated with one hand only, similarly to most of the Android phones of this caliber. The LG Optimus GT540 is made of plastic, textured like brushed metal. It feels fine in the hand, and due to the phone's weight and solidness, doesn't feel cheap.Size Visualization ToolLG is really walking a knife edge with these resistive touchscreens it places in its smartphones. First the GW620, now the Optimus.
