After reviewing a slew of high-end dual core Android smartphones recently, it was actually a relief to go back to the humble single-core Android phone category. And there seems to be quite a bit of action around the Rs. 20k price bracket. Ever since Samsung pegged the S-LCD version of the Galaxy S at Rs 19,990 in retail; it seems to have had a very successful run. Now, with the Samsung Nexus S available for the same price as well, the choice just became wider. The LG Optimus Black surprised us with the price it has been pegged at. The box price of the phone is Rs 21k, while it is retailing for just under Rs 20k. this puts it squarely in competition with the above mentioned rivals, inlcuding the iPhone 3GS. Straight out of the box, and two things catch your eye. First, the weight, or the lack of it! At less than 110 grams, this phone glides squarely in the featherweight category. Second is the sense that despite being a 4-inch touchscreen, the phone isn't very big. It fits nicely in the hands, and can be used very comfortably with the same hand holding it, albeit in portrait mode.
When LG revealed its Optimus Black to the world at January's CES in Las Vegas, there were two outstanding features. One was that it was the slimmest smartphone in the world, the other that it was the first to feature Nova's technology for displays. The latter, LG suggested, would be something akin to the Retina screen of the iPhone 4. Since January, Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc and the Samsung Galaxy II have both appeared, sporting smaller waistlines, but it remains that we hoped the NOVA display, along with a number of other features, would live up to our high expectations. Another impression we had at CES was that, while the dual-core processor sporting LG Optimus 2X was definitely the Korean phone maker's top device when it came to power, the Optimus Black had been made to turn heads. While we did get quite excited when we saw it for the first time, the initial excitement didn't last long. From the front it is definitely an eye-catcher (in fact it looks rather like the iPhone 4) with its four-inch display surrounded by a piano black finish. However, turn over the device and you'll be confronted by a Teflon cover that looks rather plasticky and more like something you'd find on a cheaper phone.
Sitting alongside the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Black is a top-end smartphone, slipping in at just over £400, attempting to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple iPhone 4 for the smartphone crown, but with considerably fewer features and less processing power than its LG stablemate.First things first – the LG Optimus Black is light. Weighing a featherweight 109g, it even reaches a skinny 6mm side edge curvature, and 9.2mm thickness at its deepest point, besting the Apple iPhone 4 by a millimetre. Some may feel the lightness cheapens the feel of this handset somewhat, but our jeans pockets were thankful and it was nice to tote around something that didn't weigh us down. The slightly metallic back cover is smooth, and the phone's few soft keys are well-blended into the chassis, giving it a minimalist aesthetic. We have to say, however, that a few of the edges felt a little too rough, detracting from the overall feel of the phone. Yet where it's light and thin and joyous, it's also somewhat long. This makes the LG Optimus Black a little uncomfortable for small hands to hold it portrait, although curved corners help it sit nicely in the paws in landscape orientation.
The Optimus Black is the latest addition to LG's collection of Android smartphones. With a less impressive hardware spec than the Optimus 2X, the manufacturer is hoping that this new Google phone will appeal to a broader range of customers. It has a reworked design, a new, brighter Nova screen and a 5 Megapixel camera as well as video calling and a whole new user interface, but what's the Optimus Black like under the pressure of everyday use? We took it for a spin to find out ... The Optimus Black's unfussy design is helped by the fact that it's just 7 mm thick at the thinnest point, which gives it a certain minimalist chic. We're glad to see a matte black finish has finally replaced the traditional glossy black which so often gets covered with greasy fingerprints. When we first picked it up, we were so surprised by how light the Optimus Black is that we thought we'd forgotten to install the battery. But we hadn't: at just 109 g, compared to the 147 g from the Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black is so light you hardly notice it's there, whether you've slid it into a pocket or are holding it in your hands.
We are not really sure why this happens, but every time we have to review a new slim and sexy device for you, we feel a heartwarming blend of excitement and anticipation. Such is the case with the LG Optimus Black, which we are holding in our itching hands today. The smartphone captured our attention right out of the box with its thin waistline measuring a mere 9.2 millimeters making it officially one of the thinnest Android devices we have ever come across. Furthermore, the beautiful 4-inch NOVA display has already impressed us with its unprecedented brightness of up to 700 nits – enough to outshine all its current IPS-LCD and AMOLED competition. But does everything look as pretty on the inside as it does on the outside? Well, it is time to find out!It doesn't take a second look to figure out that the LG Optimus Black has been designed for the style-conscious audience in mind. Its thickest section measures only 0.36 inches (9.2 millimeters), which is a guarantee that the smartphone will never be noticed in your pocket. Its weight of 3.84 ounces (109 grams) seems to be spot on for a device of its size – the handset feels neither too light, nor too heavy in the hand.
It's not a Black Label phone but could've honored the designer series. It's called Black but bathes in light. What is the LG Optimus Black? To begin with, it's solid build and pure elegance. With Android on board, smartphone meets fashion phone in a super slim package. The Optimus Black is the first phone we've tested that uses the NOVA display technology. Special enough to warrant a dedicated article. You're welcome to read the whole piece but, to sum things up, it's the brightest display on a phone with picture quality that stands up next to the industry's best. Despite the 4? NOVA display however, the Optimus Black is a compact device ? there's not much bezel around the screen and it's mere 9.2 mm slim. The smooth back with sloping edges makes the Black feel thinner still. And that's 9.2 mm at the thickest ? no camera bump or any other bulging bits. The screen and the slim silhouette are certainly the highlights of the LG Optimus black but not all there is to it. The LG Optimus Black focuses on the all-round experience rather than the raw processing power but a 1GHz (single-core) CPU and 512MB RAM should be by any means enough for most apps.
The LG Optimus Black is a smartly designed Android phone that features a nice-looking display, a simple and clean user interface, and battery life that would make some far-more-expensive smartphones envious. I spent a day using the phone and found it to be dependable and easy to use, despite that fact that its hardware and features are far from top-of-the-line among Android phones. The phone's single-core processor was sufficient for the modest tasks I tried to perform using the phone's Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS. LG says that the Optimus is easy to upgrade to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The 3G phone uses GSM/UMTS cellular technology, so it will work with an inserted SIM card from AT&T or T-Mobile. Optimus Black is smooth and all-black, with rounded corners and no hard lines or protruding buttons. It's 4.8 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide. It's 0.36-inch thickness slims down to 0.23 inch at the sides on its bottom, creating an illusion of even smaller size. The Optimus Black weighs just 3.84 ounces. That may be impressive from a design perspective, but the phone felt a bit too light to me--a little too insubstantial (and droppable) in my hand. By comparison, the iPhone 4 takes up less space on the desk yet weighs almost an ounce more (4.83 ounces).
There’s a new kid on the mobile display block, LG’s NOVA LCD display. It promises to be the dream screen – it’s super bright, energy efficient, with great colors, viewing angles and outdoor visibility. We’ll be running our usual battery of tests on the new guy to see if it can deliver those promises. LG isn't just waiving superlatives around – they’ve put hard numbers to their promises. They bill the NOVA display as the brightest smartphone screen around – 700 nits of brightness. Also, keep in mind that bigger screens are harder to light up, so at 4” big the NOVA display of the LG Optimus Black P970 will be well ahead of the competition if it can pull it off, as other 4-inchers don’t even come close to 700 nits. NOVA uses In-Plain Switching technology, which greatly reduces color distortion and contrast loss when viewed at an angle. This is vital on mobile devices as you rarely hold the phone so that you view the display head on. But LG has done more to enhance the viewing experience – they’ve worked harder on reaching what they call “pure white tones”. LCD and AMOLED screens usually have a slight tint to them, so greys are not quite neutral and even the white is not perfectly white.
We heard about the LG Optimus Black for the first time back in December of last year. It was codenamed LG B at the time, and the leaked screen spec sheet highlighted its brightness – 700 nit, which is the most ever on a smartphone. It was also compared to the iPhone 4, which, at the time, was the thinnest smartphone on the market, and found to be even slimmer. At the CES 2011 show LG finally lifted the veil over the phone, giving it the name LG Optimus Black, and also christened the screen technology – .Now we have a prototype of this incredibly thin and light Android phone with what LG claims to be the brightest mobile display out there. Is it worth the hype, considering that screen reflectance is at least as important for good visibility in direct sunlight as is display brightness? We can't really vouch for that, considering what we had is a non-final version, but read on for our initial impressions... Size Visualization ToolThe first thing you notice about the LG Optimus Black is how amusingly thin and light it is – with (109 grams) of weight, and (9.2mm) at its thickest, it really raises the bar, considering it boasts a generous 4” display.
