The good old smartphone has held the highest echelons among the mobile phone segment. However, now we have a new category of devices that will be the flag bearers for exclusivity – 3D phones. The first one to arrive in our test center is LG Optimus 3D, a phone that LG (smartly) launched before the HTC Evo 3D, in India. We did a detailed hands-on of the Optimus 3D the moment it arrived in our territory. And now here is the full-fledged review. Let's forget about its standout feature for a bit and besides that, it is a bit of a disappointment in the looks department – it's thick, and heavy (168 grams). There is a silver strip running down the entire length of the back panel and this adds a bit of shine to the otherwise simple look. Despite its weight, the rubberized feeling does help when you are holding the phone and typing a message with the same hand. The ‘top heavy' nature of the phone can be a bit disconcerting at first, since it'll constantly attempt to tilt backwards, headfirst. The 4-inch display has four touch-based buttons – Menu, Home, Return and Search. While these buttons are backlit, the backlight comes on only when you touch one of them. Kind of defeats the purpose of the backlight!
Hot on the heels of the stereoscopic 3D screen in the Nintendo 3DS, glasses-free 3D displays seem to be becoming something of a (small) trend in the smartphone market. Then again, mobile makers are constantly searching for new features to make their handsets stand out in an increasingly crowded sector. HTC has already gone 3D with the Evo 3D, but since it's not out in the UK yet, LG is the first manufacturer to bring a glasses-free 3D mobile to Europe with the Optimus 3D on Android 2.2. We'll obviously be trying out the 3D functions of this phone, but we're also keen to find out how the Optimus 3D holds up as a smartphone—as don't forget it can be used perfectly well in 2D mode too! So can LG's 3D model live up to this summer's star handsets, namely the HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S II? Find out in our review. Words that spring to mind when handling this handset are: big, bulky, heavy (169 g compared with 148 g for the Sensation and just 118 g for the Galaxy S II), thick, masculine and unexceptional. Having previously come up with some original smartphone designs, LG doesn't seem to have tried very hard to make the Optimus 3D stand out—and that's a shame for a smartphone with such a niche market position.
The magical allure of the 3D magic is on a rise but manufacturers can hardly meet the demand for better and cheaper ways of 3D capturing and visualization. And while wearing glasses in the cinema may feel alright, wearing one to watch TV seems like too much to ask for the general public. In the 3D dawn, the consumer world is already looking for revolution. Surely, there are many reasons why the glasses-free 3DTVs can't enter our homes yet, but luckily you can have such thing in your pocket. And while the other manufacturers are still thinking on the idea, LG is taking the lead. The first ever mobile phone with 3D display - LG Optimus 3D - was announced back in February on the MWC and it is now available. As a great move by LG, the Optimus 3D caught the competition off guard .Actually, the Optimus 3D holds so much power right now, that there is barely a phone that can't compete on all levels. Despite its key feature is the 3D screen and camera, it has everything to become a best-seller even without the 3D tricks - starting with the dual-core processor and latest-gen graphics, going through the capable camera and connectivity package, and the snappy Android Froyo (hopefully, soon to be replaced with Gingerbread).
The LG Optimus 3D, expected to hit AT&T shores as the LG Thrill 4G, aims to deliver more than most other high-end devices do. With its , it scores a , but will this be enough for it to get noticed in the packed high-end Android space? The dual-core TI OMAP4430 chip is one of the most capable dual-core performers we've seen and coupled with 512MB of dual-channel memory it makes the Android experience buttery smooth. Then there's 3D – the 4.3-inch screen does an excellent job of displaying , while the two rear cameras will help you create your own three dimensional content. Factor in full HD 2D video recording, and you get the strengths of the Optimus 3D, but it has its weaknesses as well – it's bulky, comes with Android Froyo instead of Gingerbread and the overall photo quality disappoints. The LG Optimus 3D tips the scales at 5.93 ounces (168g) and has a considerable girth of 0.47 inches (11.9mm). Sure, the tri-dual muscle justifies this to a certain extent, and the bulkiness does make it look solid in the hand, but the phone definitely by today's standards. Size Visualization ToolThe with resolution of 480 x 800 pixels is key to the success of the 3D-centric phone. After all, it's one of the front-runners of 3D parallax displays on a phone along with the HTC EVO 3D.
One of the most buzzed-about phones at Mobile World Congress was the LG Optimus 3D, the first mainstream phone to rock a 3D display. On top of that, the Optimus has a slick design, a dual-core processor, and a 3D camera/camcorder. We were disappointed when LG announced that the Optimus 3D was neither a 4G phone nor destined for the United States. Imagine our joy, however, when we found out at CTIA that it would be rebranded for AT&T's HSPA+ network as the LG Thrill 4G. The Thrill 4G isn't available yet, but LG sent us an Optimus 3D review unit as sort of a preview of what's to come. Polished Design The Optimus 3D looks a lot like the LG Revolution 4G, with brushed-plastic detailing and a silver strip running down the battery cover. Like the LG T-Mobile G2x, its backing has a nice curve. It feels well made and sturdy, with metal around its borders and a rubberized matte-black battery cover. Measuring 5.07 by 2.68 by 0.47 inches, the Optimus 3D is slightly bigger than the 5.03-by-2.63-by-0.52-inch LG Revolution. The Optimus 3D is a bit lighter, though, weighing 5.93 ounces as opposed to 6.06 ounces. Still, it is a little on the hefty side--and for my small hands, the Optimus 3D isn't the most pleasurable thing to hold up to my ear for a long amount of time.
LG has had a good run of form with its Optimus series of smartphones. The Optimus One was a solid little thing for a good price, then it branched out and up into fancy phone territory with the quirky dual-core charms of the Optimus 2X, before tackling high style with the skinny Optimus Black. Now LG has another demographic in its sights – fans of the hot trend for 3D technology. The Optimus 3D is the first smartphone to launch with a "glasses-free" 3D display, enabling users to take still photos and record videos in full 3D, then play them back in 3D on the phone's cutting-edge 4.3-inch display. But thanks to what LG calls the phone's "tri-dual" technology – a dual-core processor, dual cameras and dual-channel memory – the Optimus 3D comes with a massive price tag. The cheapest monthly tariff for this monster 3D phone currently stands at £35, with SIM-free prices currently around the £500 mark. We've dusted off the Celluloid Movie Maker for a session with the new 3D phone - check out what we thought with flickering images: Is it worth paying such a hefty early adopter tax in return for LG's – and the world's – first glasses-free 3D mobile phone display? The Optimus 3D is as hefty as its price tag, but at least you're getting your money's worth in terms of sheer physical bulk.
The LG Optimus 3D, expected to arrive as the LG Thrill 4G for AT&T stateside, does one thing most other handsets can't do – on a 4.3-inch screen. But if you think that 3D is just a gimmick, the handset will not zealously try to convince you of the opposite as the feature is implemented very subtly so you can easily use the phone without it. The paired with dual-channel memory makes the Optimus 3D one of the speediest handsets we've seen to date. Throw in 2D , and you get the main highlights of the Optimus 3D. It's not absolutely perfect, though, as it can be a bit too bulky for some and it comes with Android Froyo instead of Gingerbread. The LG Optimus 3D has a of 5.93 ounces (168 g) that you can instantly feel. It's not among the slimmest of phones either with 0.47 inches (11.9mm) of thickness, but while that might be a downer for some, it makes the phone feel solid in the hand. The with resolution of 480 x 800 pixels dominates the front and defines much of the handset's functionality. After all, it's among the first 3D parallax displays on a phone (the other is the HTC EVO 3D) allowing you to view 3D content glasses free. When in good ol' 2D mode, the screen has very good viewing angles, but a slightly disappointing direct sunlight legibility.Size Visualization ToolBut how does glasses-free 3D work?
A huge high-res screen, a new chipset expected to deliver beyond anyone's wildest hopes and 1080p video recording: the LG Optimus 3D sounds like a great package and we haven't even started yet. These are big ones no doubt, but not even close enough to making the headline. Not with a stereoscopic screen and a couple of 3D video-recording cameras at the back. The LG Optimus 3D is flagship stuff, head to toe. A premium package that doesn't need anything else to be complete. But whether it asked for it or not, the LG Optimus 3D might turn out to be the device of the season, on the shortlist of any self-respecting geek. Just look at those specs and you'll see what we mean. This preview is based on a pre-production Optimus 3D unit and the functionality, software and performance could possibly differ in the final retail units. 2010 was a year of disappointment for the LG mobile division, but they're looking to turn things around in 2011. Having beaten all the competition to bring the first dual-core smartphone to the market, LG is now racing to get to the 3D checkpoint ahead of HTC. And the really cool part is that LG didn't rush through the rest of the development in favor of the stereoscopic screen and imaging on the Optimus 3D.
If you believe some film critics, 3D movies have already had their day and film buffs are already heading back to the original 2D viewing experience. If this is the case, LG may live to regret being the first phone maker to bring out a 3D handset - the LG Optimus 3D. We have to admit to being rather excited by the whole idea, so we started our review hoping that we wouldn't be disappointed after the novelty wore off. LG has gone all-out on the design of the Optimus 3D. Its standout feature is the 4.3in screen, but you are more than likely going to notice the heavy-ended top of the device first. Turn over the phone and you'll see why it looks so bulky. The back of the phone features a pair of camera lenses, sitting at each side of the LED flash on a strip of metal. In the past we've criticised these metallic strips, which do nothing more than tell us that the phone is a ‘Google' device (or, in this case, that it has 3D Stereoscope). By the way, this is also the reason it has two lenses. It's because of these lenses that the phone has a ‘chin' - however it's pretty subtle so doesn't offend the eye.
