LG Cookie Fresh GS920 review
The LG Cookie Fresh updates the original Cookie, which we reviewed over a year ago. If you want a touchscreened handset and are strapped for cash, then it might entice at £129.99 (though as ever, shop around. We found it for £109 at Play.com). But at this price you're looking at some compromises both in terms of features, design and build materials, and in the end we think you might do better looking elsewhere. On the features front, this has the odd distinction of not being 3G-capable. It's quad-band GSM with GPRS and EDGE, and that has an obvious impact on data download speeds over the network. If you think you can shift to Wi-Fi, think again – it's absent. Mobile internet fans steer clear. There's no GPS either, and the camera shoots at just 2MP. The Cookie Fresh GS290 is a mostly black handset. It has some silver highlights including the front 'multitasking' button beneath the screen and, on some models, the bottom edge is sliver too. You've got six colour options for the rest of the edging – black, red, blue, pink, light green and silver. Our review sample was the rather dull black, but the others all add a strip of brightness to what is otherwise a bog-standard design.
LG Cookie Fresh
The Cookie KP500 was a budget phone with a spec to match, but it has so far sold over one million in the UK – it's the manufacturer's best-selling touch-screen handset so far. The Cookie Fresh doesn't change a winning formula, just tweak it a bit. So will LG see similar success? The LG Cookie Fresh is a nice looking device – clean and smart with curved corners – but it doesn't stand out. It's slightly narrower than the original, but manages to fit in a three-inch resistive touch screen. The gesture unlocking feature, which we've seen on previous LG devices, is great: assign icons to specific features and simply scribble the icon onto the screen when the phone is locks to go right to that feature. We went for an M for our messages, for example. The simpler you make it the easier using the gesture unlock will be. You get three home screens. The first lets you add four of your favourite functions by attaching them to a rather cute virtual washing line. It's a shame you're limited to four, but then the large icons would crowd the small screen if you added more so it's probably for the best.
LG Cookie Fresh GS290 Review
It seems LG is firmly intent to offer the wide audience a cram full box of cookies in an attempt to come up with a handset to repeat the smashing success of the LG Cookie KP500. Two new members of the famous family have been introduced by the time of the current review, the LG Cookie Plus GS500 and LG Cookie Fresh GS290 and we are waiting for the official announcement of another device, the Cookie Gig KM570. What they all have in common is they are affordable feature phones equipped with touch sensitive screens. Today we are going to take a closer look at the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 that, at the time being, is the poorest family member in terms of hardware specifications. It seems what it stakes on to win over customers is audio playback functionality – the handset features 3.5mm headphone jack and allows its owners to listen to radio stations without necessarily having to plug in a headphone set. Similarly to most other handsets in the affordable segment of the market today, the Cookie Fresh lacks 3G and comes with mediocre, 2-megapixel camera. For good or bad, the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 is the typical affordable touchscreen phone, in terms of design. Its appearance is by no means breathtaking, but it’s not bad either.
LG Cookie Fresh GS290 Preview
As the original LG Cookie, the phone that foreshadowed the era of the budget touchscreen, proved to be quite a success, the manufacturer naturally seeks to keep this trend alive. The appearance of the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 is a proof of this. It is part of the newly-formed Cookie family. However, what place does it take among the rest of the family members is a tough question, as the Cookie Fresh takes some of the newer features found on the Cookie Plus, but sacrifices others that were initially found on the original. In short, it replaces the 3MP camera found on the first Cookie with a weaker 2MP one, and it lacks 3G, but sports a 3.5mm jack. So, in the final analysis, we can say the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 will be the handset of choice for those who enjoy listening to music while on the move, but would pay as little as possible. For good or bad, the LG Cookie Fresh GS290 is the typical affordable touchscreen phone, in terms of design. Its appearance is by no means breathtaking, but it’s not bad either. LG plans to offer it in a plethora of color variations, trying to suit as many consumer tastes as possible.. The plastic, from which it is manufactured, feels fairly cheap, although not unpleasant to touch.
