LG GS170

If all you want to do is chat, the LG GS170 is a nearly perfect cell phone. We say "nearly" because it lacks 3G and voice dialing, which would have made the GS170 the ultimate T-Mobile talker. But at $9.99 with a two-year contract, the GS170 is a good choice for anyone looking for a basic, inexpensive device on T-Mobile. The LG GS170 is a standard flip phone. Measuring 3.6 by 1.9 by .07 inches and just 2.8 ounces in weight, the GS170 is nice and tiny when closed. It opens to a manageable 6.75 inches, which I found to be about a quarter inch longer than the perfect size. There is a 1-inch, 96-by-96 display on the outside of the phone that shows the time, date, battery life, signal strength, ringer status, and caller ID. The outside is mostly covered in red, rubberized plastic that feels soft to the touch, with gray plastic accents along the outer edges. The gray plastic follows through to the interior of the phone when you open it up. The screen inside measures a tiny 1.8 inches, which makes the low 220-by-176 resolution bearable. It's sharp enough for messaging, it's viewable outdoors, and this isn't much of a multimedia phone so there's no need to worry about pictures or video.

LG GS170

LG made its T-Mobile debut this year with three phones--the Sentio, the dLite, and finally, the LG GS170. Whereas the Sentio and dLite touted interesting design and multimedia features, the GS170 is a decidedly entry-level phone. Still, you do get a VGA camera, a speakerphone, and Bluetooth, and the call quality isn't bad either. The LG GS170 is available for free with a new two-year agreement. The LG GS170's design is that of a basic rectangular flip phone with a simple plastic shell. At 3.6 inches long by 1.9 inches wide by 0.7 inch thick, the LG GS170 is a slim and compact with smooth tapered sides and rounded corners. The surface is made out of a soft touch material that makes the handset easier to grip. The GS170 is lightweight at 2.8 ounces. It's wrapped in red all around with hints of grey on the sides. On the front of the phone is a 1.04-inch 96x64 pixel external display. It supports up to 65,000 colors and displays the usual date, time, battery life, and signal strength information plus caller ID. There are no external camera controls, though, so you won't be able to use it as a self-portrait viewfinder. Above the external display is the camera lens.
