The LG GD900 Crystal in this review is a curious phone as it comprises two touchscreens in one: the standard touchscreen you'd expect to find; and another one on the keypad. But then the keypad is also curious: it's completely clear. Crystal clear, in fact, hence the name! Combine all this curiosity with LG's great S-Class user interface and you have a superb touchscreen phone that's choc full of novelty, and which really knows how to stand out from the crowd. At least, that's how it appears on the surface - is it actually any good though? Read our LG GD900 Crystal review to find out. At first glance, the LG Crystal looks like any other touchscreen mobile phone, with a big LCD screen and little in the way of buttons. As soon as you see it, you'll just assume the buttons are all virtual, and are accessed by pushing a virtual keypad or touching various icons on the screen. The reality is very different. The LG Crystal has a completely see-through keypad that slides out from below, letting you access its multiple features without getting finger prints all over its screen. Oddly enough, you can, if you wish, get fingerprints all over its lovely screen, as the screen is fully touch sensitive, so you can access all of its features in the usual touchscreen way.
LG was one of the first mobile manufacturers to promote the importance of design as a selling point for the latest phones, and it continues to diversify its collection of fashion-focused handsets. The LG GD900 really stands out thanks to a sliding keyboard which is entirely transparent and touch-sensitive. It also offers direct access to your favourite applications and handwriting recognition. Despite this pared-down exterior, though, the Crystal GD900 is still a multimedia phone in its own right. When it's closed, the GD900 looks like an ordinary phone that won't attract that much attention. It's only when you slide out the transparent numeric keypad that the Crystal Touchpad catches your key, with the individual keys themselves outlined in a gentle blue light. It's very surprising, but to really push the concept, LG should have gone for something that felt a little less plasticky. Nevertheless, the phone is still well-built. Being transparent isn't the only new feature on the keypad though: it also includes shortcuts to your favourite apps and an easy way to switch from one program to the other, as the Crystal is a multitask device. To launch an app, all you have to do is draw a symbol that you've pre-defined to the feature you're after.
We're all for cool stuff that has no point besides looking awesome. Take, for example, Nate's hair. But plenty of pointless gimmicks just take up too much space. The LG GD900 Crystal has gimmicks galore, but too many of them get in the way of a smooth user experience, and the magic of a see-through keyboard isn't enough to make us fall in love with this phone. You have to respect LG for trying something new with the GD900's keypad. It's made of tempered glass and lights up around the edges with bluish-white light. It's a very cool idea, and we love the heft and solidity of the glass. Unfortunately, the keypad doesn't feel quite as good as it could, because its back is made of much flimsier clear plastic. The keypad is also a touch-sensitive controller. That means you can scroll through items on the phone with the swipe of a finger on the keypad. You can even use multitouch to zoom into images and Web pages by pinching your fingers on the keypad, as well as on the screen. The touch-sensitive keypad is a great idea, since you can navigate around without obscuring the screen with your fingers. And, when you don't need it, it slides out of sight.
When talking about good design it's usually all about placing the right elements in the right places. And in the rare cases when an R&D team actually comes up with something innovative, they usually reserve it for a 2000 buck handset like the Motorola Aura. The LG GD900 Crystal and its see-through keypad, however, prefers walking among the mortals to sitting on mount Olympus and drinking ambrosia. And luckily the sleek handset is much more than a pretty face. The rich feature set of the GD900 Crystal places it only a short step away from LG's multimedia flagships. However the lack of GPS is easily made up for with cool features like gesture shortcuts and multi-touch input. Sure, these may seem like fancy additions rather than key features, but sometimes it's all about winning the hearts of the users rather than their minds. And the Crystal seems pretty well designed to do that. So what we have on our hands here is a handset that's dressed to impress and with a mind bright enough to keep your attention. We really like it when there's something new thrown at us and a see-through touch-sensitive keypad is certainly a first in the mobile world.
