The Optimus 3D is the first smartphone to launch with a "glasses-free" 3D display and we've reviewed it this week on TechRadar. The phone enables you to take still photos and record videos in full 3D, then play them back in 3D on the phone's 4.3-inch display. Also this week. we've brought you our initial verdict on Google's social networking offering, Google+, as well as reviewed the Nokia E6 and the webOS-toting HP TouchPad tablet. LG Optimus 3D review While 3D has yet to win the hearts and minds of the general public, the hot 3D products are still hitting the high street thick and fast. The latest wave of 3D products is coming in the form of glasses-free 3D mobile devices. LG's Optimus 3D is one of these very gadgets, and comes packing dual-core innards and the ability to not only show 3...

MWC 2011: Clever Bluetooth sticker brings NFC to any smartphone for £20

By TechRadar, published 16-02-2011

A French company has developed a near field communications sticker that gives any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone NFC capabilities, including contactless payments. That means you could feasibly enjoy Nexus S-style NFC without having to shell out for a new smartphone. There aren't many NFC-enabled smartphones around at the moment – the Google Nexus S and Samsung Galaxy S2 are the notable ones – although many are rumoured to be en route to shop floors, including Apple's iPhone 5. Bargain-field communicationsBut if you don't fancy a £500 upgrade or a £35 contract hanging over you for the rest of your life, the simple £21 Twinlinx MyMax NFC sticker could be all you need.Using the handset's Bluetooth connection, the sticker can either be used with external readers (like Oyster gates and cont...

Exclusive: RIM: Nokia is wrong to underestimate us

By TechRadar, published 15-02-2011

Nokia has pulled no punches over the past few days when talking ecosystems. CEO Stephen Elop has repeatedly talked about the 'three ecosystems' and how the Nokia/Microsoft deal has created a 'three horse race'. He's talking about Android, iOS and Windows Phone as the three horses in said contest; but what about RIM? Elop was dismissive of the BlackBerry maker when answering questions at the company's Mobile World Congress press conference on Friday."We believe the work we've done with Symbian and the C3, combined with the business capabilities of Microsoft, gives us a very strong competitive position relative to everyone in the environment. The obvious and visible ecosystems are us, Android and Apple," Elop told journalists. Zing!Ouch, right? RIM is understandably unimpressed at being dism...

MWC 2011: HTC Salsa: first impressions

By TechRadar, published 15-02-2011

Like its dance-themed brother, the HTC ChaCha, we were only allowed a brief glimpse of the HTC Salsa through a glass box at Mobile World Congress. We don't let little things like that put us off though, so we shot through the glass with as few reflections as possible to bring you our first impressions of the Facebook phone. The Salsa is a pure touchscreen handset, unlike the ChaCha which has a big spacious QWERTY to play with. The only physical buttons appear to be the Facebook button, volume slider, lock screen and what we think (hope) is a camera shutter button on the side. The 3.4-inch touchscreen looks fairly good, although we were viewing it through glass. There's also the now-obligatory front-facing camera on the handset and a rear-mounted camera, too. It's not as slim as the ChaCha a...

Jabra Stone 2 Bluetooth headset unveiled at MWC

By TechRadar, published 15-02-2011

Jabra has announced the Stone 2, its follow-up to the Jabra Stone which the company saw as redefining Bluetooth headset design.Jabra insists that high end products needs constant refreshes in order to avoid devaluing the market, but there aren't many upgrades to the latest Stone iteration and the look remains very much the same.Unlike the original Jabra Stone, the Stone 2 offers voice control and voice guidance for uber-handsfree calling.LeatheryThe main aesthetic change is to the headset's materials; instead of a plastic casing, the Stone 2 now has a leather-effect surface covering. Aside from the slight design tweak, the Jabra Stone 2 has an updated status display; three LED lights now show how much charge the headset has available when it's docked in its pebble-shaped case. The only rem...

Jabra Freeway Bluetooth speakerphone unleashed at MWC

By TechRadar, published 15-02-2011

Over at Mobile World Congress, Jabra has pulled back the curtain on the Jabra Freeway, a Bluetooth speakerphone with three speakers to provide virtual surround sound. The speakerphone, which clips handily over a car visor, is also HD voice ready and offers voice control and noise cancelling using dual-mics. In-car surround soundJabra reckons the Freeway is the world's first three-speaker speakerphone and as such offers true 2:1 stereo through the two 3 watt tweeters and the centre bass speaker. The virtual surround sound is quite impressive, employing the same sneaky tricks that flatscreen TV manufacturers use to fool the ear. Jabra showed us a demo of the speakerphone receiving an HD voice call, and that was undeniably crisp, clear and spookily felt as though the caller was in the room wi...

MWC 2011: Microsoft demos Windows Phone 7 Kinect integration

By TechRadar, published 14-02-2011

In one of the strangest tech demos of Mobile World Congress 2011 to date, Microsoft has been showing off a tech demo of a Windows Phone 7 working with an Xbox 360 Kinect game. The video, which you can see below, shows Kinect and Windows Phone 7 working in what appears to be a fairly seamless way.Gimmick or tech breakthrough?Whether this type of gameplay will ever make its way into commercially available games (and how) remains to be seen. For now, we can only imagine this is one of Microsoft's clever tech demos that it is using to wow the crowds at MWC 2011 in Barcelona this week. That said, the idea of effectively controlling a friends movements in his or her lounge as you are sitting comfortably anywhere else while idly stroking your Windows Phone 7 handset does appeal!Particularly if the ...
