The Jabra Extreme is a Bluetooth headset that comes with a USB dongle for connecting it to a PC. It features excellent noise cancelling technology through two built-in microphones, and in our tests we found that it worked brilliantly, blocking out the background noise and making Skype calls feel less strained. The sound quality is also excellent, some of the best we've heard on a Bluetooth headset of this size. The small size of the Jabra Extreme headset makes it easy to carry about, but it's not that comfortable to use, with the volume control buttons in particular being a little too much on the small side, meaning they're fiddly to use.The Jabra Extreme comes with two sizes of in-ear headphones, although we found both to be a little uncomfortable, and definitely not something you'd want to have in your ear all day long.Pairing up the Jabra Extreme to a PC or Bluetooth is incredibly easy – it took us just a few minutes to connect it up to a smartphone and a PC, and it accepted calls from both without any problems. This is an excellent Bluetooth headset that offers excellent noise cancelling and sound quality and is very easy to set up and use.
With a feature dubbed "Noise Blackout Extreme," the Jabra Extreme clearly takes noise cancellation seriously. Priced at $80 (as of June 28, 2010), the Extreme plants the company's latest audio technology in a lightweight shell to create an excellent-sounding unit that's ready for the noise of the big city--or of a busy household. Though not as stylish as the Aliph Jawbone Icon, the Extreme's silver, electric-razor-like microgrill body is attractive and functional. The dual internal microphones worked quite well in my tests. The 0.35-ounce device comes with a handful of ear gels for proper fit, along with two earhooks and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (enhanced data rate) support. The company says that its Noise Blackout Extreme noise cancellation technology reduces extraneous sounds twice as well as the Noise Blackout technology used in older Jabra headsets. I found it difficult to quantify that claim; but certainly the updated technology worked very well even with loud music playing in the background. The person at the other end heard what amounted to muffled background music while my voice over the Extreme came through clearly. Incoming audio was good, with ample clarity and little static or other problems.
Need a good Bluetooth headset that also plays podcasts wirelessly? Most mono headsets don't, but the Jabra Extreme does. It also features a dual-mic design and an improved version of the company's Noise Blackout Extreme technology, which is a fancy way of saying noise cancelling. It also includes an automatic volume control that balances voice levels against environmental sounds. But the Jabra Extreme has its work cut out for it, in such a hotly contested segment - especially given the prior Jabra Stone's ($129.00, ) miserable performance. Mostly, the Extreme fares OK thanks to its audio streaming and low price, though plenty of other headsets sound better for voice calls. The Extreme measures 1.1 by 0.7 by 1.9 inches (HWD) and weighs 0.4 ounces. It's fashioned in dark grey and black plastic, with a fine textured pattern on the front panel. It looks a bit thicker than the similarly styled Sound ID 400 ($129.99, ) and the BlueAnt Q1 ($129.95, ). There's a long, raised black button on the front with a built-in LED for answering and ending calls. Tiny volume buttons sit above and below it, with a dedicated power switch along the bottom edge. You can also tap one of the volume buttons to check battery status and remaining talk time.
Though we've sung the praises of noise-canceling headsets from Plantronics, Aliph, and even BlueAnt, we've sadly not done so with Jabra in 2009 because we just weren't that impressed with its offerings. In fact, the last Jabra headset we were truly impressed with was the Jabra BT530 from 2008. Thankfully, Jabra has decided to improve on that in 2010 with its successor, the Jabra Extreme. Named after Jabra's new noise-canceling technology--Noise Blackout Extreme--the Extreme promises improved audio quality, new features like multipoint and A2DP compatibility, plus a couple of design improvements. Though we're not too impressed with its looks and the ear fit, we think the Jabra Extreme is a pretty good headset, especially for the retail price of only $79. Measuring 1.9 inches long by 1.1 inches wide by 0.7 inch thick, the Extreme is long and slender with a decidedly industrial look that makes no pretensions it's a Bluetooth headset. It's clad in gunmetal gray on the front and black everywhere else. The Extreme's front surface is covered in a perforated grille, which hides the headset's dual microphones.
