In the run-up to the launch of its hit high-end smartphone, the Ascend D, Huawei is releasing a mid-range Android phone (running Gingerbread, not Ice Cream Sandwich) at an entry-level price: the Honor—dubbed Mercury in the United States—will go for around £250. Naturally, it isn't as powerful as the frontrunners on the mobile market, but with a 4-inch screen (480 x 854p) it ain't too shabby, either. Want proof? Check out the 8-Megapixel camera that records in 720p and the 1920 mAh battery. Beyond that, however, everything else is basic: single-core Qualcomm processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD). Huawei has given consumers two choices for the interface: use the raw Android interface or a small, additional software downloaded from Google Play. How does this low-cost Android phone hold up during use? Is it worth the (small) price tag? Let's have a closer look... The Huawei Honor comes in either black or white, it's discreet and has broad appeal. In other words, there's nothing visually remarkable about it. With its curved edges, the all-plastic handset could just as easily read LG or Samsung on the front (or even Apple, if it weren't for the materials used) and you probably wouldn't notice the difference.
Quite frankly, we weren't very excited about reviewing what we expected would be another plasticky smartphone from Huawei, that was halfway where it was actually supposed to be. However, we would be the first to admit that perceptions were turned on the head by the Honor. Lying on the desk, it looks like a typical mid-range Android smartphone. For example, you can have this and the LG Optimus Black (read our review) sitting next to each other, bit you won't realize which is which unless looked at closely. The 4.0-inch display on the Huawei Honor has a thin bezel around it. Below the display are four touch sensitive keys - options, home, return and search. The left spine has the volume rocker, while the opposite spine is completely clean. Top is where you find the power key and the 3.5mm jack. Flip the phone over and you see completely different scenery here. The battery cover has a matte finish with a textured finish. Opening this still requires precision with the nails, which does make it feel cheap. Overall, the phone feels its price - plastic body with a decent enough build quality. Nothing more and nothing less.
The Huawei Honor is a mid-range Android smartphone that retails for about $370 off contract and has relatively a lot to offer in exchange, namely a 4-inch high-resolution display, a 1.4GHz single-core processor, and an 8-megapixel auto-focus camera. But those are all specs on paper. What we are more interested, as usual, is the way the smartphone performs in real life. That is why we put the Huawei Honor to the test and we are ready to share with you how it fares. The Huawei Honor , but its white, glittery back cover looks quite catchy. (Plenty of other colors are available too.) It is 11 millimeters thick, which is okay for a contemporary mid-range device. However, with a weight of 135 grams, you will surely feel the handset resting in your pocket. It fits nice and solid in the hand, although we had some difficulties reaching the far corners of its screen with a single thumb. We are quite happy with the underneath the display, they are sufficiently responsive and we did not experience any accidental presses. The 2-button volume rocker and the lock key, located on the device's and sides respectively, are also well made – well exposed and providing plenty of tactile feedback. The 4-inch display on the Huawei Honor left us with mixed feelings.
The Huawei Honor is made in China and proudly so. Designed, engineered and created in the Land of the Dragon, it's nothing like your run-of-the-mill cheap knock-off. It's a genuine Chinese product, not just something put together for someone else including premium brands drawn by the low manufacturing costs. The Huawei Honor is a Chinese smartphone and one with solid specs too. Not as loaded as the Meizu MX, but a lot more subtle too in doing an impression of some of its illustrious contemporaries. Anyway, most phones in the Huawei lineup looks like a phone you've seen. This is not a trivia quiz though. And we don't care what phone (or phones) the Huawei Honor brings to mind. There must be more important things to Huawei than coming up with fresh original designs. How much bigger, you ask? Well, how about - pretty huge. A multibillion multinational, Huawei is - to put it simply - the Chinese version of Motorola or Ericsson. One of the world's leading network and telecom equipment manufacturers, they've been making mobile phones too for a while now. Ideos should ring a bell: a small lineup of low-to-mid-tier Android smartphones and tablets.
Huawei has been steadily supplying second-tier U.S. carriers like MetroPCS and Cricket Wireless with midrange Android smartphones at lower prices--at least ones that are affordable for those buying phones off-contract, at a higher up-front cost. Take, for instance, the Huawei Ideos X5 and the Huawei Ascend family. Although the company often saves a better class of devices for Asia, we are starting to see higher-caliber Android smartphones from Huawei in the U.S., like the Impulse 4G from AT&T. The Honor, with its Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, 4-inch screen, 1.4GHz single-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, 2-megapixel camera, and promise of three days of battery life, resides in the higher end of the smartphone spectrum. Though the Honor still falls short of premium status (sadly not all of its features deliver), the company is headed in the right direction. The Honor is a pretty good-looking device, and in terms of size, it hits a sweet spot at 4.8 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.43 inch thick--not too big, not too small. Its glossy black face is encircled by a silvery rim, and its backing comes in six colors: Glossy Black, Textured Black, Burgundy, Elegant White, Vibrant Yellow, and Cherry Blossom Pink. I tested the white model.
