A year after the S7 tablet, Huawei has launched a renovated and quite slimmer version called Ideos S7 Slim. This is a 7-inch tablet equipped with Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) and a custom user interface upgrade, as well as a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The tablet comes with 3G and Wi-Fi support and can be used for making phone calls through headphones. The slate also includes a 2-megapixel back-facing camera, a microSD card slot and an HDMI port. Overall, the S7 Slim offers everything that can be expected from a modern-day 7-inch tablet. Still, certain shortcomings surface on closer inspection, preventing the S7 Slim from beating the competition. For starters, it is rather heavy, the display has many faults and the user interface is lousy. Its price, however, is nearly half of what other 7-inch tablets cost. Ultimately, the S7 Slim is an improvement over its predecessor and offers a range of features for a low price.BUILD & DESIGN From the outside, the Huawei Ideos S7 Slim looks very modern. Even though it is entirely crafted out of plastic materials (black in front, white in the back), it appears compact and solid. Its edges are slightly rounded on the back side, where it houses a battery cover.
Huawei only recently entered the handheld device market and will likely release the IDEOS S7 Slim later in the year. While pricing has yet to be announced, Internet chatter points to a price around the US $300 mark, which we think is ideal for this very capable device. The Slim sports a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen which while not the best in terms of pixel density and sharpness, owing to its 800 x 480 pixel resolution, is bright, boasts solid contrast and is responsive to quick movements and light touches. This makes using the device to browse the web, read books or respond to e-mails a doddle.Given that the device will likely be launched with an aggressive price tag we weren't surprised to find that it runs Google's Android 2.2 OS. Huawei has tinkered with the OS' skin, which we found made the OS feel more suited to tablets. Honeycomb is still the way to go however, if you want an Apple-like tablet experience. The S7 is quite a handsome device that feels solidly built in hand and so could easily pass for a premium product. The IDEOS requires that you remove one side of its rear cover to gain access to its SIM card slot, which is located under a large removable battery.
Samsung's Galaxy Tab isn't the only 7-inch Android slate taking on Steve Jobs' iPad preferences; Huawei still falls short of being a household name, but the company has nonetheless managed to get its Ideos S7 tablet on Best Buy shelves alongside the Galaxy Tab later this month. It'll also make its European debut in early December, and at $299.99/£288 it's also significantly cheaper than the Tab, though with a few understandable compromises along the way. Keep reading for our full Huawei S7 preview. To be clear, the S7 we have is a pre-production unit, so we won't be treating this as a full review; instead it's a preview of the Huawei, and certain aspects may be subject to change by the time the slate goes on sale. It's been loaned to us by the guys at Clove.co.uk, who expect to have UK stock of the S7 in the first week of December 2010. Hardware As we saw back at IFA 2010, the Huawei S7 has a 7-inch touchscreen and a sturdy, discretely designed chassis. Unlike the 1024 x 600 resolution capacitive panel on the Galaxy Tab, the S7 makes do with a WVGA 800 x 480 display and a resistive touchscreen; there's a short stylus in a slot on the side.
