HTC Wildfire S

The HTC Wildfire S is a cute, tiny Android smartphone for MetroPCS. But at $179, it's also a bit overpriced and underpowered. It should satisfy users who aren't too demanding of their devices, but you can make a better choice for less money. Design and Call Quality The Wildfire S is nearly identical to the model we reviewed over on T-Mobile (Free, 3 stars). It's very small for a smartphone, at just 4.0 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD), and weighs a light 3.7 ounces. It's made entirely of smooth, white plastic, with silver accents around the display and camera. It looks attractive, and gives the appearance of a higher end device. The 3.2-inch, 320-by-480-pixel capacitive display lowers your expectations. It looks bright and colorful, but that resolution makes images a bit gritty. Typing on the onscreen QWERTY keyboard was fine, thanks to large touch keys, although they block half of the screen. The Wildfire S is a dual-band 1xRTT (800/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; it connected to my WPA2-encryped home network without issue. Reception and call quality are both average. Voices sound full and clear in the phone's earpiece, but the phone rattles a bit at higher volumes. Calls made with the phone sound somewhat fuzzy, though still understandable, with average noise cancellation.

HTC Wildfire S

If you think smartphones have gotten entirely too big, you may want to consider the HTC Wildfire S. The phone is diminutive by regular smartphone standards--it makes the compact iPhone 4S look towering--but it makes for a nice transition if you're used to a petite flip phone. In fact, if you're looking to jump on the smartphone bandwagon, you may not need all the horsepower and features that come with higher-end devices. After all, those also tend to come with higher-end prices. And that's where the HTC Wildfire S comes in. It's attractively priced--free with a $100 mail-in rebate and new, two-year contract--which makes it an excellent bargain. Don't be fooled by the size; it offers all of the features of your standard Android smartphone. Likewise, the build quality is surprisingly good. However, the petite dimensions will turn off some. Portions of this review were taken from our evaluation of the HTC Wildfire S for T-Mobile, since the devices are essentially the same. At 4 inches tall by 2.3 inches wide by 0.49 inch thick and weighing 3.7 ounces, the HTC Wildfire S is a nice break from today's mammoth devices. The petite handset easily slips into a pants pocket and feels very comfortable to hold. The Wildfire also has a very nice build quality--with a matte rubbery backing that's less prone to scratching.

HTC Wildfire S

The HTC Wildfire S is a small, budget Android smartphone that helps fill out T-Mobile's lineup. It runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), which deserves a hallelujah, as plenty of new handsets are still shipping with the dated Android 2.2 OS, and even the sluggish, archaic Android 2.1 in some cases. No one will trade in a HTC Sensation 4G ($199, 4 stars) for this phone, but the Wildfire S offers some of Android's best apps and features at a particularly appealing price point ($79.99 with contract). Design, Call Quality, and Apps The Wildfire S looks like a lower-end, touch screen feature phone, even though it's an Android smartphone. It measures 4.0 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs a svelte 3.7 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, with the exception of the glass screen. It's a smooth, appealing form factor that may snare many buyers based on appearance alone. The 3.2-inch, 320-by-480-pixel capacitive panel itself looks bright and colorful and quickly becomes smooth and accurate to the touch. The Wildfire S packs a G-sensor, digital compass, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor, just like all the higher end Android phones do. Typing on the on-screen QWERTY keyboard was surprisingly easy in both portrait and landscape mode; credit the oversized keys (the tradeoff is that they block a significant portion of the screen).

HTC Wildfire S Review

Say Hello to the smallest offering I've seen in a while from HTC, this little device is small enough that anyone can carry it no matter how small the hands are. It would feel comfortable for your 10 year old, and would make a great starter phone too. The Wildfire S comes in a few different colors, its an amazingly great device for a mid-range offering and it's only like $79 or so over on T-Mobile — interested yet? Before I start posting up all the pictures of this cute little phone here is our hands-on unboxing post and the video is below. To start off this thing is tiny, it only has a 3.2\" 480x320 resolution screen, comes in with a 600 Mhz processor, 512MB of RAM and ROM as well as an included 2GB SD card but for the price the specs and quality are quite nice. I'd put the Wildfire S in my top 3 for best mid-range offering that is for sure. Here are some photos for a better idea. This isn't the first or the last device that will come with a 3.2\" screen so some might be used to the size. Overall usage seems fine with the screen size and the images are crisp and clear given the slightly lower resolution. Flip the Wildfire S on its side and we have the micro-USB charging port as well as the volume rocker to the side.

HTC Wildfire S Review

The HTC Wildfire was a real pioneer - it showed that a smartphone could be produced at an affordable price, as it was offered for free by some operators, with contracts for around 15 a month. In fact it proved such a good-value handset that it walked away with the Best Value Phone title at our Consumer Awards last year - but since then, other phone makers have managed to produced smartphones with even more features at even lower prices. So can its sequel, the HTC Wildfire S, fare as well in an ever-more crowded market? Like its older brother, the Wildfire S is pocket-sized - in fact its 5mm smaller than its predecessor. It has curved edges and is smooth in character, although the power key and volume bar both stick out - so much in fact that you'll need to be careful when phoning someone. Unlike its big brother, the Wildfire S lacks an optical pad - instead there are four touch keys for setting menu, back, search and home. While this is all very well, note that it does mean you need to wake the handset with a press on the power key and then a screen swipe to unlock it - plus there is no dedicated camera key, which is a nuisance.

HTC Wildfire S review: S-size droid

Mini phones are hot and HTC don't want you take Sony Ericsson's word on that. What started as a small niche is now a segment that keeps growing ? and one that no manufacturer can afford to ignore. Sony Ericsson have just announced their updated mini lineup while Samsung and LG routinely have more than one thing going on in the midrange. HTC know they can't afford to stop right in the middle of what they've been doing with the Wildfire, the Aria and the Gratia. Going all the way back to the Tattoo, which first put Android on the radar for budget shoppers. There's plenty of choice already for those who like their droid in a small package. The HTC Wildfire S seems to be aware of that and does well to make itself seen. The lively paintjobs and friendly compact size are the right features to show to potential buyers. The Wildfire S has found a way to further reduce size while keeping the same 3.2? screen. One thing we should keep in mind though. HTC seem to be in power-saving mode currently with all their recent releases but facelifts offering minor improvements over predecessors. That holds true for the Wildfire S too, though this is not to say that it shouldn't be on your list if you're looking for the next hot mini.

Phone Reviews: Mobiles & Smartphones

Like several other of its successful smartphones, HTC has upgraded its WildFire handset to a version 'S'. This new and improved compact Android phone is sure to appeal to space-conscious users, but is the WildFire S just a watered down Desire S, or can it make a name for itself as a super-small but still fully functional model? It's time to find out! HTC is an innovative brand in the smartphone market, generally offering handsets with original or unique designs. This time though, there's nothing really new. Like the rest of the brand's Android handsets that have been treated to an 'S', the phone's overall design hasn't changed much at all, and the only model that really stands out in this range is the Legend. That said, the WildFire S has a clean, fairly subtle design with a good overall finish—and not all smartphones can boast that. Although the screen hasn't been equipped with any fancy technology like AMOLED or Super LCD seen higher up in HTC's range, the WildFire S does still have a 3.2-inch screen (which isn't that small when you think about it) with an increased resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. This should help make the phone much more pleasant to use, especially with apps download from Android Market.

HTC Wildfire S Review

?he original Wildfire played a significant part in bringing HTC and Android to the masses. More affordable than its higher specced siblings, like the HTC Desire, it was nevertheless endowed with HTC's trademark build quality and Sense UI. In our review, the handset got an overall thumbs up, with room for improvements, most notably with respect to the screen. Hopefully, with the HTC Wildfire S, HTC have managed to put the hot back into this Wildfire. The design of the original HTC Wildfire played a key part in making it such a success, looking like a baby HTC Desire, it offered similar durability, but in a more compact form factor and at a lower price-point. HTC's Wildfire S runs with the working formula, delivering a smaller package, better screen and even slicker aesthetic. Size Visualization ToolHTC have bumped up the pixels on the Wildfire S to a comfortable spread across 3.2 inches. This makes the world of difference to sharpness, with LCD technology producing well saturated colors and good brightness and contrast levels, making outdoor viewing manageable in all but the brightest conditions.Navigating itself, there are four capacitive buttons directly below the screen, all against a black frame that surrounds the screen.

HTC Wildfire S review

The HTC Wildfire arrived in mid-2010, when the world was still reeling from the impact of the sensational HTC Desire. And the Wildfire was almost as popular, coupling HTC's fantastic Sense user interface with a smaller, solid and capable little body – it was a lot of people's first, affordable smartphone. But things are a little different in 2011. The dual-core "superphones" have arrived, which means something with a lowly 600MHz processor is going to have to win fans via features and price rather than power. The HTC Wildfire S isn't exactly a cheap phone, either. Currently on sale for around £220 through the SIM-free retailers, there are now plenty of extremely capable Android-powered phones out there for less money – such as the Samsung Galaxy Ace or LG Optimus One. It's going to be a bloody fight, this.DesignHTC has refreshed the design substantially, giving the Wildfire S the same workmanlike black and chrome look as seen in the excellent HTC Desire S. There are no physical buttons on the front of the phone, with HTC opting for four capacitive touch-buttons. These are your standard Android Home, Menu, Back and Search options. They're responsive, plus HTC has put in a little vibration feedback to reassure your brain that your finger did indeed just hit the right spot.

HTC Wildfire S Review

Expectations around the HTC Wildfire S are, a little surprisingly, high. The third of HTC's new Android devices from MWC 2011 in February, the entry-level smartphone replaces the Wildfire, a device which managed to carve itself quite the niche among pre-pay users and the budget or bulk conscious. Now the S-variant comes to further refine the lineage: we're a long way from the Tattoo, but has HTC done enough to keep the Wildfire S relevant today? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. As HTC found with the Tattoo, making a budget device is arguably far harder than making a new flagship. While the company could throw the latest kit at the HTC Sensation's spec sheet and then attach a price to match, the Wildfire S has to be cheap enough to lure those considering a first-time upgrade from increasingly capable featurephones. Meanwhile, with smartphones getting more powerful all the time, it also had to ensure the handset could keep up with the latest in apps: no point in having a “smart” device if it plays dumb when it comes to running half of what's in the Android Market.
