HTC Vivid review: Welcome to 4G

The final member of AT&T’s impressive LTE smartphone 2011 lineup is at the start line, ready to impress. The HTC Vivid is joining the company of the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and LG Nitro HD in a bid to defend the reputation of the Taiwanese company. Hardware wise, the HTC Vivid is a familiar sight. The smartphone is essentially put together from the parts’ bin of the HTC Sensation 4G and HTC EVO 3D, save for its 4.5“ screen and beefed up built-in memory - it packs a well familiar dual-core CPU, clocked at 1.2GHz and a Snapdragon S3 chipset. We do suspect that HTC has intentionally omitted features such as an HD screen and a beefed up CPU in order to maintain the flagship status of the Beats Audio sporting, HTC Rezound for Verizon Wireless. Thankfully, the Vivid is priced accordingly as well. As you can notice above, the spec sheet of the HTC Vivid is mostly a familiar sight. HTC have grown the screen to put it in line with the rest of the LTE offerings from AT&T. We are not sure however, how the feeling of familiarity will bode for the smartphone – it simply does not feel like a brand new product. It is the end of 2011 now – a good eight months since HTC took the wraps off the similarly equipped Sensation 4G.

HTC Vivid Review

You wouldn't know from its specs--a huge 4.5-inch display, a 1.2-GHz dual-core processor, and an 8-megapixel camera--but the $99 HTC Vivid is the least expensive of AT&T's 4G LTE smartphones. Along with the LG Nitro and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, the Vivid is capable of very fast data speeds in a growing number of cities. Add to that a bevy of multimedia apps, and you have a device that can keep you entertained for hours. But is the Vivid the bargain it looks like?Click to EnlargeSave for its massive 4.5-inch display, the front of the HTC Vivid looks unremarkable--a squarish design with the standard four touch-capacitive buttons (Home, Menu, Back, and Search) lining the bottom. The back is a bit more interesting, though: A black plastic skirt tapers dramatically to a removable gray aluminum panel, which has cutouts for the camera and flash. Along one edge of the panel is a slim speaker grille that provides a nice accent.A chrome power button and headphone jack reside at the top of the headset. The right side of the phone has a volume button, and a microUSB port sits on the lower left side.

HTC Vivid

It's always exciting ushering in the first thing of its kind, and in this case, it's HTC's first 4G LTE smartphone for AT&T. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and the HTC Sense 3.0 interface. It also comes with a hearty helping of high-end specs, including a 4.5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) touch screen, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, support for 1080p HD video, and 16GB of internal storage. That's a pretty hefty package for $199.99 with a new contract. Yet in the price/materials trade-off, HTC seems to have sacrificed its trademark craftsmanship and build quality when birthing the Vivid, which feels and looks notably cheap and plasticky rather than the polished premium device we've all come to expect from HTC. I hate to say it, but with its high-gloss, black plastic body and rounded corners, the HTC Vivid resembles a Samsung device more than HTC's typical meticulously crafted designs, which is a bit of a letdown for a handset with such high-caliber capabilities. The fact that it's a jumbo phone--at 5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick (depending on where you measure it)--makes the plastic slab-iness of it all even more apparent.

HTC Vivid Review

Let's not forget to give credit where credit is due, but after a long year of seeing plenty of top-notch smartphones, we've probably forgotten about the HTC Inspire 4G for AT&T. Well, we really can't forget about it, because it brought HSPA+ connectivity to the masses for AT&T – priced competitively at $99.99 on-contract. Seeing that AT&T is on the verge of kicking things up with their 4G LTE network, it's naturally fitting for them to bring a device that showcases their network's potential. Seriously making it affordable on any budget, the $199.99 on-contract HTC Vivid seems remarkably priced to offer plenty of value for the dollar – while introducing us to the capability of AT&T's next-generation data network. The package contains: Right off the bat, we're quickly reminded of the HTC EVO 4G because the Vivid sports some of the characteristic design traits found with the beloved smartphone. Specifically, it features a plastic exterior, beveled border that tapers towards the back, and a very similar overall size. Despite the plastic exterior, it still packs a noticeable amount of weight when it's held in hand – though, it's evenly distributed. Fortunately though, its body is reinforced with some strength thanks to the stainless steel back cover.

HTC Vivid

AT&T has unleashed its 4G LTE network in nine cities across the U.S. The HTC Vivid ($99.99) is one of the first two smartphones that can take advantage of it, the other being the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket ($149.99, 4 stars). Like the Skyrocket, the Vivid isn't perfect; of the two, the Skyrocket gets our Editors' Choice nod. But each one has its strengths, and I can easily recommend both. Design and Call QualityThe Vivid measures 5.07 by 2.64 by 0.44 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.24 ounces, which is on the heavy side for a touch screen phone without a keyboard. The Vivid is the first HTC phone to feature a 4.5-inch screen, which puts it right on par with the Skyrocket. And unlike Samsung's lower-resolution 480-by-800-pixel panel, the HTC sports 540-by-960 (qHD) resolution, the same as the Motorola Atrix 2 ($99.99, 4 stars). HTC's keyboard worked fine in both portrait and landscape mode, and it has a useful predictive text algorithm. The Vivid is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), tri-band HSPA+ 14.4 (850/1900/2100 MHz), and dual-band 4G LTE (700/1700 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. I tested this device in and around Boston, one of nine cities in which AT&T has turned on its 4G LTE network.

HTC Vivid Review

This month AT&T have revealed their first two 4G LTE devices, the Samsung Skyrocket and the HTC Vivid, the latter device being the one we're having a look at here today. This device is the next step in the HTC smartphone design evolution, and as you'll see in the video portion of the review below, it's almost as if they asked someone on the 3D mockup crew to cut off all the edges and make something sharp! We've already got AT&T 4G LTE speed tests from one of the few areas AT&T has its LTE network deployed (in Texas,) now it's time to see if the phone stands up to the pressure of the rest of the HTC family (and the rest of the AT&T family as well.) This device is certainly part of this year's HTC device design family, but hold it up next to any one of the other HTC smartphones released in the last 11 months and you'll find yourself wondering if the crew is thinking about going in new directions. There's flat edges! There's a single flat metal slide-out panel on the back! It's almost as if someone from Motorola came over and slid a few pages of their smartphone ethos into the HTC packet. That said, it's a refreshing cut from the pack, and said panel does make the whole package feel extra high-quality.
