If you own a Windows Phone 7 device and are annoyed by all your iPhone-flaunting friends, then here’s an app for you to play a ‘dirty’ little prank on them. Highlighted by XDA-Developers, the app called iPooey simulates an iOS 4 interface on your WP7 device. You can then show it off to your friends and claim it to be some sort of secret iPhone prototype. They will look on with envy until they touch the interface at which point they get a little surprise. The iPooey simulates the iOS 4 interface to the tee, and will surely be convincing to the unsuspecting. Your friends will marvel at how you got a hold of such a mysterious iPhone prototype, but upon touching any icon on the screen they will see a cartoon poo appear—hence the name of the app—along with the lo...

Ever feel like somebody’s watching you? Good because they are. Without proper protection, your internet usage habits are left out in the open; vulnerable to anyone to exploit. By simply navigating to a page, mousing over a given pixel or clicking through an advertisement or other link, most computer users give data brokers, advertising companies and other nefarious types enough to information to work with to tailor ad content to your needs. Creepy. While we love the look and fit of a good tin foil hat as much as anyone else, Ghostery, our Browser Extension of the Week, is really the better choice for putting an end to all that unwanted tracking. After installing Ghostery, you’ll be asked to answer a few simple questions surrounding what you’d like the extension to do for you: Track t...

Online retailer Expansys has posted full spec sheets supposedly for the HTC Desire HD2, HTC Desire 2, HTC Wildfire 2 and Samsung Galaxy S2 ahead of Mobile World Congress. Quite a spec haul there, but we wouldn't necessarily put money on these being the real deal. For starters, we're fairly convinced that the HTC Wildfire and HTC Desire refreshes will be named the HTC Wildfire S and HTC Desire S, yet the retailer has them down with 2 as the suffix. Core suspicions Still, some sound about right; the Samsung Galaxy S2, for example, is certainly set to be a dual-core behemoth – but we're incredibly sceptical about the possibility of a dual-core HTC Desire HD2 being revealed any time soon. So, basically, peruse these specifications at your leisure but don't be surprised if they turn out to be...

Nokia will use hardware, industrial design work and chipsets intended for MeeGo devices for Windows Phone handsets instead, it has been confirmed, as the company “repurposes” its investment into bolstering what’s expected to be a “large number of Windows Phone devices” by 2012. According to CEO Stephen Elop, the same is true for Symbian devices, suggesting that “you may see some similar devices that launch with Symbian and Windows Phone,” though existing devices are unlikely to see an update to Windows Phone 7. MeeGo was expected to be Nokia’s next push into smartphones, and while the company will launch a single device in 2011, the rest of the projects the company’s engineers have been working on will be shifted over to Windows Phone...

Amazon has outed its latest mobile shopping app, and now Windows Phone 7 users can know the wallet-draining usefulness of having an easy way to browse the online retailer’s shelves while on the move. The Amazon App for Windows Phone 7 uses the by-now-familiar side-scrolling Hub layout, in this case flipping between product overview, details, related items and reviews. There’s also integrated search and the usual 1-Click ordering, Prime support for those subscribers to Amazon’s priority mail service, Wish List access and package tracking. There doesn’t appear to be any use made of WP7 phones’ cameras, for snapping barcodes and making price comparisons, however. The app is a free download from the Windows Phone Marketplace, and available now. Press Release: Am...

The world takes another baby step towards NFC ubiquity today, with the announcement of new NFC capabilities for Android developers with the 2.3.3 update. Devs will now have access to a “comprehensive” NFC reader/writer API that will allow their apps to read/write to “almost any” tag in existence. Developers will also have access to new advanced intent dispatching. This gives the app much more choice in what to do when a tag comes in range. Also new is limited support for peer-to-peer connection with other NFC handsets. Phone swapping must be all the rage right now. We just mentioned AT&T’s brand new trade-in program in partnership with FlipSwap and now we bring you news that Research In Motion (RIM), father of BlackBerry, is announcing its own “trade-up” program. Depending on the model and condition, you could be getting up to $120 from RIM for trading in your old BlackBerry for a new one. The BlackBerry trade up website offers two links—one for those with less than 5 BlackBerry smartphones to trade-in and the other for corporate or government accounts that have 6 or more. However, if you do have 6 or more for some odd reason, the whole process seems a bit more complicated as you’ll have to call in for assistance. The RIM website states that the trade-up program is only for a limite...

A new patent from Apple has been revealed today by the US Patent & Trademark Office, suggesting that the future iPad may be sprouting a kickstand. The document included several images detailing the built-in stand showing a pivoting feature that will allow the iPad to be perched up both in landscape and portrait orientations. The drawings indicate that the new design will allow the iPad to be angled at various degrees suitable for viewing movies as well as for using its virtual keyboard. Certain tactile features will make it easy for the user to make these adjustments. The material for the stand will likely be made of metal such as stainless steel although suitably durable plastic may be another option. The kickstand will also pivot back into place to form a flush surface with the b...

HTC is a brand that needs no introduction. The Taiwanese giant, known for building handsets for the likes of O2, iMate and so on, has entered the retail market and met with reasonable success. They've made their mark in our market too, with some excellent capacitive-touch phones, and some of their phones like the Touch HD2 and Desire. Those interested can read our HTC Desire review here.
