The HTC Desire HD is a device that needs no introduction. Think of it as the larger, full monty (if you will) version of the older HTC Desire (reviewed here) and the latest Desire Z, which we have reviewed here. A 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen means a larger phone, and the Desire HD has the innards to go with its large(r) persona. Think of it as HTC's flagship Android smartphone till the Sensation gets here, and yet as a device it has a few minor, yet aggravating flaws that when added up play spoilsport with our final verdict. Once again, we received a review sample that came in a simple anaemic-white box, the retail packaging will surely be prettier. At 4.3-inches, nobody expected the Desire HD to be compact, after all how do you conceal a massive display? HTC didn't even try, and the Desire HD is large, but handsomely so as the bezel on three sides of the phone is quite slim, causing most of your attention to be drawn on to the wide expanse of glass before you. The bezel beneath the display is wider than on the other three sides, and understandably so, for it doubles as a backdrop for four touch-based capacitive controls. There is plenty of space around these buttons unlike the Desire Z, and the backlighting is even and subtle, but more than sufficient for visibility in total darkness.
The recipe is simple enough: the manufacturer has taken the original , added the dimensions of the huge (which ran Windows Mobile 6.5), shaken it all together and sprinkled its Sense software layer on top. The result is the Desire HD, a handset whose 4.3'' screen has a bulky, rather masculine, form factor. Add to that a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, an 8 Meagpixel camera with two LEDs providing the flash and a new graphics chipset and you'll be able to see why so many people are keen to try the Desire HD. But will it live up to their expectations? You'll be big one day ... One thing's for sure: you can certainly feel the weight of the Desire HD's 164 grams when you pick it up. This is definitely a big phone, and that impression is reinforced by the body, which is almost entirely made up of a single aluminium frame. HTC has made an unusual decision about where to put the battery, SIM and microSD card slots. The former slides into the side of the phone like a cartridge in a games console or a digital camera battery, but without a solid clip to hold it in place.
The HTC Desire gained plaudits from the industry, and now HTC has come back with a bigger - and probably better - offering in the shape of the HTC Desire HD. But don't dismiss it as just another follow-up device - the Desire HD is very much a new phone in its own right; it has a new look, a bigger display and a better operating system. Whatever, HTC has certainly put itself under some pressure to deliver something even better than the Desire, and to offer a plausible alternative for iPhone fans. With its slick aluminium chassis, the Desire HD probably has more of the look of the HTC Legend, rather than the Desire, which was Teflon based. On the back of the device you'll find a pair of removable covers. Underneath is a space to store the microSd card and SIM. On the right-hand side, the cover hides the battery storage space. This means it is possible to hot swap memory cards without the need to turn off the device first. Mind you, we were rather worried about the way in which the battery virtually falls out - if the battery cover became loose after prolonged use, would the battery fall out and get lost?
Proceed with caution, big Snapdroids ahead. We guess that sign is due wherever someone mentions Desire HD. It's big and bad and it takes no prisoners. HTC certainly took their time with releasing a bad-ass Android handset on our side of the pond but their timing is perfect now. We're about to enter the holiday shopping spree and HTC Desire HD is in for the kill. Powered by the latest Android 2.2 Froyo hand in hand with the latest HTC Sense, the HTC Desire HD is what the HD2 was to HTC Windows Mobile portfolio. With an 8-megapixel camera and HD video it may as well unsettle quite a few of the top smartphones out there. The innovative fast boot, the complete connectivity set and solid multimedia capabilities round off a great package. HTC might just have a natural bestseller on their hands. You might want to have a closer look: But there's more to it. The HTC Desire HD is a mongrel. It doesn't even warrant a name of its own. Desire is cheesy and HD is worn-out. And they both are OLD phones' names. Alright, don't take it literally. It's not as simple as saying HTC got themselves a brand new phone out of two older ones.
HTC have become an incredibly popular Android propagator since the release of the original HTC Desire. More than ever, Android fan-boys and tech-enthusiasts alike are hanging on their every word, hoping their smartphone dreams will be realized in their next release. Now that the T-Mobile G2 (HTC Desire Z in Europe) has just received an awesome thumbs up here on phoneArena, it's time to see if its multimedia-centric sibling, the HTC Desire HD manages to enamour us with its huge 4.3-inch screen, cutting edge processor, 8MP camera and brand spanking new version of HTC Sense sprinkled generously over the already popular Froyo.A clean, playfully styled box, around 4 inches wide, 4 inches deep and 6 inches tall will tease you when you first set eyes on it. A crisp, life-size image of the HTC Desire HD garnishes the box along with playful illustrations, willing you to open it, play with it, enjoy it. From the offset, this feels like more than a phone. Slide up the top part of the box, and as the bottom part glides down, HTCs latest offering gazes up at you, with plastic protective film smoothed over the huge, wonderfully clean screen, it leaves us itching to peel off all the plastic and unearth the innards of the HTC Desire HD.
Big screen, big specs, big appeal. HTC know how to play the Android smartphone market, and the HTC Desire HD is no exception. Announced to great fanfare - and alongside the new online HTCSense.com service - last month, the Android 2.2 Froyo handset promises to take the original HTC Desire experience to the next level. Is this the best Android smartphone around today? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. The HTC lineage is clear; the Desire HD uses the company's unibody-style construction, as seen on the HTC Legend, with a single piece of CNC'd metal forming the screen bezel, edges and majority of the rear panel. Rather than pulling the back away altogether for battery access, the Desire HD has two removable sections: the bottom unclips giving access to the microSD and SIM slots (and also works as the phone's antenna), while a panel on the edge gives access to the user-replaceable battery. It's a tough, sturdy and tactile design, and - along with the glass screen cover - feels weighty and expensive. Our only complaints are the somewhat tricky to replace battery hatch, not something you'll be opening all that often, and some creak in the bottom cover.
