Garmin Nuvi 3790T

The newest top-of-the-line Garmin Nuvi 3790T is sleek, sexy, and stylish--words you wouldn't normally associate with a GPS device. For its new 3000 series of Nuvis, Garmin completely redesigned the case and the screen. The Nuvi 3790T sports a new 4.3-inch glass screen with a higher-resolution 800 by 480 display. And like the iPhone, it offers multitouch (pinch and zoom) controls and automatic screen orientation. The 3790T includes almost every feature in Garmin's bag of tricks, but its $450 price tag (as of October 28, 2010) makes it a tough sell. The Nuvi 3790T measures 4.8 by 2.9 by 0.35 inches and weighs 4.1 ounces without the mounting bracket. Those dimensions make it the thinnest dedicated GPS device on the market. The mounting bracket has a standard Garmin ball-and-socket adjustment mechanism--and a built-in speaker for robust sound. Power and traffic data feed through the bracket, so all you have to do is snap the device into the bracket and you're ready to go. To handle pedestrian-mode navigation, the 3790t packs an internal speaker as well. The 3790T comes with advertising-supported lifetime Navteq traffic.

Garmin nüvi 3790T

The Garmin nuvi 3790T is a real beauty. For starters, it's the first GPS we've tested that features a glass capacitive touch screen, so you can pinch, zoom, and swipe to move around menus and maps. Unlike last year's high-end nuvi 1690 ($499.99, ) which was essentially a lower-end device paired with an expensive, unnecessary, two-year data contract, the 3790T looks and feels like a proper high-end gadget that's worth the premium price tag ($449.99 list). It's also the slimmest and most capable GPS we've tested to date. As a result, the nuvi i 3790T earns our Editors' Choice award; just know that plenty of lower-cost navigators can still get the job done, if not quite as luxuriously. The 3790T measures a seriously slim 2.9 by 4.8 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and weighs just four ounces. It's made of glass and plastic; a thin chrome accent band runs around the edge of the device. The two-piece mount lets you connect the power cable; this way you can snap the unit out easily and take it with you. Since the 3790T is so thin and light, and works so well as a pedestrian navigator (more on that later), you might actually use it to find your way on foot.

Garmin Nuvi 3790T review

Wow. If sat nav heaven is having Angelina Jolie jump into the passenger seat and asking you where you want to go, then the Garmin Nuvi 3790T comes a very, very close second. With looks akin to the current iPhone 4G (but with better reception), the Garmin Nuvi 3790T is both slick, slim and very, very thin. It's packed with features that include a full capacitive touchscreen, a high resolution 800 x 480 display and a user interface that's straight out of Apple's playbook. And then made a thousand times better. We loved the TomTom Go 950 Live, but the Nuvi 3790T has not only picked up the ball and run with it, it's then jumped into a stretched Limo and driven to a brand-new state-of-the-art stadium on the other side of town. The Garmin Nuvi 3790T is slim, measuring 122mm wide by 75mm high and by just 8.7mm deep, yet feels sturdy and well-made in the hand. The 10.9cm glass WVGA display is bright and easy to see, even in bright sunlight. The fact that the glass is reflective didn't cause us any problems during our road test. The back of the unit is covered in a mixture of black brushed aluminium and plastic, and this is where you find the speaker. The edge of the unit is covered in shiny chrome with a power button on the top.
