Product Survey: GPS

The nüvi 1690 heralds Garmin's live connected nüLink! services. There are various new features: real time traffic info, Google Local search, weather, fuel pricing, plane times and so on. All this represents an alternative to TomTom's LIVE services, which already have a big headstart. (10.9 cm) offers decent legibility, even in full sunlight. The 480 x 272 pixel definition is sufficient. On the left side, a microSD memory card reader allows you to add route maps or photos to the GPS. A standard SD card adaptor will be useful here (for use directly in your digital camera with a microSD), so you don't have to use your computer to transfer from one card to another. The has been improved from models lower down the range. The pad itself is the same but the satnav fixture is better with a cigarette lighter connection built directly in. You can also recharge your satnav using the mini USB port situated on the lower edge. The Garmin nüvi 1690 is relatively compact, though it's bigger than the 1390T and 1490T. 19 mm thick and weighing in at 176 g, it will still be easy enough to carry around, though it is quite big compared to a mobile phone.

Garmin Nuvi 1690

Garmin made a pretty big splash last year when it debuted the Nuvi 880, its first-ever Internet-connected portable navigation device (PND) featuring MSN Direct data service. With MSN Direct scheduled to go offline in the very near future, Garmin had to create something to fill this void, so it partnered with AT&T to create a Garmin-branded data service called nuLink and a new connected PND to utilize it: the Garmin Nuvi 1690. The Nuvi 1690 and the nuLink service work together to bring turn-by-turn directions, live fuel prices and traffic data, and Google Local and White Pages search to the dashboard in one package, all without the hassle of monthly fees--at least not for the first two years. Physically, the Nuvi 1690 is the familiar touch screen with a suction cup design that is the standard fare for all Nuvis and indeed most PNDs. The most noticeable external change comes in the form of the gloss-black frame with chrome trim that surrounds the 4.3-inch touch screen, but there are more subtle changes. Looking at the unit's left side; we see that the SD card slot--which has been standard on the Nuvi line for years--has been shrunken to microSD size.

Garmin Nuvi 1690

Garmin's first connected GPS is a good start, but it has room for improvement. Competition in the connected GPS market is starting to heat up. Earlier this year, TomTom introduced its $370 Go 740 Live GPS device, staking a claim to the market for navigation devices with a built-in cellular radio (for real-time services such as traffic, weather, and Google Live Search). Now, Garmin counters with its $500 Nuvi 1690. I tested a late preproduction unit of the 1690, so the final shipping product will undoubtedly include some code changes. Though I saw room for improvement, I came away impressed overall. The Nuvi 1690 shares many of the features found on the recently reviewed Nuvi 1370T, including a 4.3-inch screen, text-to-speech conversion (which enables the device to announce street names), Bluetooth phone connectivity, and lane assist with junction view (so you can see simulated highway signs). The 1690 is slightly thicker and about half an ounce heavier than the 1370T, however; and unlike the 1370T, it includes multisegment routing with route optimization.
