Garmin is no tourist on the sports GPS scene. It's been doing this since the beginning and with the Edge 800, it shows. This bicycle GPS is more than a simple navigation tool. It's a veritable athletic trainer with a 2.6" colour screen and customisable features. The question is, is this just one more device you'll attach to your gear and never use again, or an indispensable tool for athletes yearning to push their limits? The features on the interface are reassuringly easy to read even in broad daylight; the only potential hindrance being the reflections created by the glossy screen. To optimise the battery life, Garmin chose to limit the use of backlighting, which turns off rather quickly. However, if you're going through a tunnel or riding at night, all you have to do is tap the screen once and it lights back up. That way, you won't have to worry about it running out of juice while you're riding. That said, you can't plan a weeklong trip without recharging it either, as the battery lasts 15 hours. The Edge 800 has a sturdy design and has no trouble travelling in the rain (something that comes in handy in our neck of the woods).
