Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 Review: Windows 7 Tablet Offers Tons of Flexibility and Features Fujitsu is a veteran in the tablet PC game, and that experience shows to good advantage with the Stylistic Q550 (price as of June 1, 2012, starts at $729; as reviewed, $849). This Windows 7 tablet incorporates an Atom processor, and comes crammed with features--a fingerprint scanner, a smartcard reader, Trusted Platform Module, and a removable battery--that make it especially attractive to business users. Inside the Q550 beats the heart of a netbook. It carries a 1.5GHz Intel Atom Z670 processor and 2GB of RAM. The Windows 7 Pro operating system works, but you'll need patience at times as you navigate the OS. Storage options include either a 30GB or 62GB solid-state drive; and you can expand the storage further via the tablet's SD Card slot. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. A rear-facing 1.3-megapixel camera and a front-facing VGA camera handle image capture chores; image quality is passable for videoconferencing and taking quick photos in the field, but not much more. The bottom of the Q550 accommodates a dock connector, a grille for the single speaker, and the AC adapter slot. The bottom of the machine isn't an ideal place to plug in a power adapter, but the tip has a 90-degree bend, so it doesn't stick out too far.
When we first reviewed the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 ($849.99 list, 4 stars), we were impressed with the little tablet PC. It offered business-ready security features and rugged construction, and provided better ease of use than many competing 32-bit Windows tablets. With the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 (Intel Atom Z690), the tablet gets an upgraded processor (and a price bump, to $990 direct) while retaining all the features we liked about the previous model, such as long battery life and a stylus for pointing precision. The Atom Z690 processor in the new Stylistic Q550 may not match the laptop-grade processor found in the Samsung Series 7 Slate (700T1A) ($1,349.99 direct, 4 stars), but it ranks high among similarly equipped tablets. The Q550 is ruggedized for business and retail use, with a magnesium-alloy frame and a screen covered in scratch-resistant, chemically strengthened glass. Built to meet military endurance standards for shock, vibration, altitude, temperature, and humidity, it's capable of withstanding the rigors of both the show floor and the production line. The tablet measures 0.63 by 10.83 by 7.56 inches (HWD), and weighs only 2 pounds. This is heavier than the previous version of the Q550, which weighed 1.87 pounds.
Despite the popularity of tablets like the Apple iPad 2 (Wi-Fi + 3G) ($629.00 direct, 4.5 stars) and their increasing use by professionals, business tablets with Windows functionality have been late to the party. The Windows tablets that have come out so far seem like half-baked attempts, seeing only moderate success in melding Windows with a touch screen interface. Furthermore, manufacturers haven't provided the security or features needed by most businesses; the closest thing we've seen is the Panasonic Toughbook U1-Ultra ($3,676.29 direct, 3 stars), but its over-engineered design and exorbitant price took it out of the running for most businesses. The Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 ($849 list at Microsoft Store) might be the first tablet you'll actually be able to use in the workplace. It delivers a slew of security features and offers a rugged mobility that will serve the traveling businesses user, without breaking the bank. The Q550 may share the form factor used by consumer-focus media-centric tablets, but this slate PC is designed to handle drops, shocks, and spills. Its strong magnesium-alloy chassis is built to meet military endurance tests for shock, vibration, altitude, temperature, and humidity, but is light enough for the traveling businessman - only 1.87 pounds.
In attempting to avoid the crowded ranks of traditional consumer tablets, Fujitsu has aimed its new tablet, the Stylistic Q550, squarely at the business community. As such, it shuns the popular Android operating system and comes loaded with Windows 7 Professional. The result is that you can take it straight into the office and make it work with any presentations, spreadsheets or external drives you use. Everything about the Q550 has been designed with business usage in mind: the 10.1-inch screen has no Super-TFT coating, meaning you can use it in brightly lit areas. A stylus is included with the tablet so that you can navigate the Windows interface. And there's a fingerprint scanner in place for extra security. What we really like is the swappable four-cell battery pack. It means the device doesn't have to be out of use when charging. You can simply buy a second battery pack and alternate the charging. At 885g, it isn't the lightest tablet around and has a smooth and robust plastic backing. The bulk of the features and connectivity mean the Q550 won't win any prizes for being slim. The chunky body includes HDMI and USB ports, as well as a Full SD Card slot. While this isn't a problem if you value your connectivity, there are drawbacks.
Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 is a Windows 7 tablet that features a 10.1-inch capacitive multitouch screen powered by a single-core Intel Atom processor. At first glance, the Stylistic Q550 looks like a consumer-friendly tablet, with its clean lines, rounded corners, and tapered edges. Fujitsu stresses, however, that the Stylistic Q550 is built not for consumers, but for enterprises. After seeing its price and using Windows 7 on the tablet for a few days, we can see why Fujitsu took care to draw that distinction. For starters, it has security features not found on consumer tablets, including a fingerprint reader, a SmartCard slot, and a TPM chip. These features must add a fair amount to the price of the Stylistic Q550 because at $849, it costs hundreds more than consumer tablets such as the Apple iPad 2, which starts at $499, and the Motorola Xoom which starts at $599. If you can get around the relatively high price, you won't be able to get around Windows 7, an operating system that is not optimized for a touch interface. After a week of using the Stylistic Q550, very little about navigating the OS feels natural. Unless your company has custom apps for the device, we don't see it providing much utility for your business pursuits.
