Dell’s track record with the stateside smartphone market isn’t the greatest; after the Aero and Streak 5 flamed out, Dell gave it another shot with the Venue and Venue Pro, which are now apparently being discontinued in the U.S. The killing off of the Venue phones coupled with the company’s continuing shift into the IT solutions...

Dell had to retire the Streak last year owing to poor sales of the device but it seems that misfortune was being shared by its stablemates as well. Dell has now discontinued the sales of the Android-based Venue and the Windows Phone-based Venue Pro in the US. What's interesting to know, however, that Dell has no immediate plans to replace these phones or to continue in the US smartphone...

The failure of the Dell Streak may have told us otherwise but it seems there is a demand for gigantic smartphones/tiny tablets after all and that people have no problem stretching their hands and pockets as long as the device in question is good (which the Streak clearly wasn't). This is being proved by the strong demand for the Samsung Galaxy Note of which 5 million handsets have been...

Quietly, and perhaps not so quietly, a lot of companies other than Apple are effectively throwing in the towel on tablets. And why not? The iPad owns at least 80% of the market, and with the $200 Kindle Fire now a reality, there's hardly a slot to compete on margin or quantity. Dell's Streak line is all but dead, and we're seeing fewer and...

What makes one tablet a winner and another a bucket of bolts? Let's start with a story. Once upon a time, there was a little English company called Acorn Computers. Through the early 1980s, it had quite a bit of success with an 8-bit home computer named the BBC Micro. You may remember it. For a replacement, Acorn decided that none of the then-available processors - such as the Motorola 68000 and Intel 80286 - were suitable. So it decided to make its own, as you do. The year was 1985 and Acorn developed a 25,000 transistor RISC processor called the ARM v1. It used it to power the now defunct Archimedes computer, and that same ARM core - with a few enhancements - is what now powers more than 75 per cent of all embedded 32-bit devices made in the 21st century, 90 per cent of all mobiles in th...

T-Mobile USA has announced its Q1 2011 results, and the numbers don’t look great. Net customer losses hit 99,000 while revenue flatlined from Q1 2010 at $4.63bn; however, despite ARPU (average revenue per user) remaining steady at $46, overall income dived from $362m in Q1 2010 to $135m in Q1 2011. That contrasts sharply with Verizon and AT&T, both of whom had relatively strong first quarters. T-Mobile did see data revenue rise 20-percent compared to the same period a year ago, though that’s less than the 22.3- and 23.9-percent rise of Verizon and AT&T respectively. Part of the reason for T-Mobile’s declining income is that the cost of acquiring each customer rose, up $10 year-on-year to $310 per subscriber, which the carrier reckons was predominantly down to in...

The Amazon tablet rumors refuse to die, and now there are whisperings of another OEM and even some component orders to throw into the mixture. After rumors last month that Samsung would be producing the Amazon tablet for a potential late-Summer release, now DigiTimes‘ sources have waded in with word that Quanta Computer will be handling production, using Fringe Field Switching LCD displays sourced from epaper manufacturer E Ink. E Ink obviously already supplies the displays for the Kindle ereaders, but by using an LCD panel Amazon’s tablet would be able to show color graphics, video and other more dynamic content. Fringe Field Switching panels - which are actually produced by E Ink subsidiary Hydis – are similar in technology to IPS displays such as used in the iPad...

Also, a superfast gaming notebook from ORIGIN, a crazy thin Thinkpad, and an update for the Nook Color. And a cell tower you can pack away in your suitcase. We also have lots of tablet news: Acer, Lenovo and Dell are planning new slates. And in the Android world, the G2X will soon get a serving of Gingerbread, Skype has solved problems with its Android app, and Amazon will give you $$ for Android apps. We are also keeping an eye on the PlayStation Network, which is still down after an “external intrusion”. Read on for more. Google’s mind-control may have gone too far, as a serial letter-writer ...

Details of two 10-inch Dell tablets, one based on Intel’s Oak Trail and the other on NVIDIA’s incoming Tegra T25, have emerged. According to the tablet roadmap, acquired by Android Central, the Dell Latitude ST is expected to arrive in October running Windows 7 on a 1.5GHz Oak Trail chip, while the Dell Streak Pro will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb on the Tegra T25 and land in June. The leak comes amid Dell CEO Michael Dell admitting that he “didn’t completely” predict the “rapid rise of the tablet” and predicted that Android would squash Apple’s iPad. Asked whether he thought Android tablets would end up outpacing Apple’s iPad – something analysts don’t expect to take place for several years – Dell was confident the G...

Years back before I became a full time geek I worked in the hospital for over a decade mostly with people that had breathing problems like asthma. The thing with asthma is that the triggers can vary greatly for many people and the first thing you need to do to control your asthma is to figure out what triggers your attacks and avoid it. The inhaler has been around for years and while they all look basically the same, there are many different medications. What all inhalers do have in common is that they do not store any detail on when they are used. A company called Asthmapolis has a cool new inhaler that uses GPS. The point of adding a GPS device on the inhaler is that it can see when the user activates the inhaler and then map it and compare the data to the thousands of other asthmatics ...

The launch date for Dell’s 10-inch Windows 7 based tablet looks to slip until the fall according to industry analysts. Nobody knows why the 10-inch tablet won’t make it’s debut until at least September, but it’s certainly going to spell doom for Dell taking advantage of the back to school run-up. Dell is planning to position the 10-inch as a business grade tablet anyway, so they not feel the urgency to make the back to school window, instead focusing on the Holiday crowd instead. Dell began to fan the flames of a 10-inch tablet way back in October, and have released both 5 and 7 inch Dell Streak models with mixed reviews. But with growing business interest in tablets, it makes sense that Dell will stay the course and continue with the product line. That’s ...

AT&T might be increasing the upgrade price for off-contract purchase of smartphones. An anonymous tip through Android Central reported several models were going up in price by $50. This increase only affects those who are purchasing a smartphone without a 2-year contract. “We’ve updated our early upgrade and no commitment price points for smartphones and feature phones,” an AT&T spokesperson confirmed to PCMag. “Only customers who are not yet upgrade eligible or who do not want to sign a contract are impacted. As mobile devices become more sophisticated, their cost goes up. This change reflects the increased costs, while still allowing us to offer customers the latest device before they qualify. Acer’s smaller Iconia Tab A100 Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet has been priced and dated courtesy of Amazon UK, with the 7-inch slate expected to ship from April 20. Priced at a competitive £299.99 ($485), the A100 has a 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen, 8GB of internal storage and a Tegra 2 processor paired with 512MB of RAM. We grabbed some hands-on time with the Iconia Tab A100 back at MWC 2011, when it was still running Froyo rather than Honeycomb, and came away tentatively impressed. Acer’s design is certainly compact, and there are twin cameras – a 5MP auto-focus camera on the back side, and a 2MP front-facing camera on the front – along with WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and an HDMI port. There’s no mention of 3G in the Amazon product page, only the generic R...

Dell has priced and dated the Dell Streak 7 for its UK launch, with the 7-inch Android tablet expected to hit the market at the end of April 2011. The 3G and WiFi equipped tablet will be sold by Dell direct, SIM-free and unlocked, for £299 (including VAT and delivery); that matches the price Samsung is expected to ask for its WiFi-only Galaxy Tab. The main difference is screen resolution, with Dell lumbering the Streak 7 with a WVGA display where the Galaxy Tab has a crisper 1024 x 600 panel. For more on the Dell tablet, check out our original review of the US version from back in January. Meanwhile, Dell told Android Community that it was readying updates for its “Stage” UI system – found on both its Android smartphones and tablets, and on its main PC and notebook ra...

With the iPad 2 WiFi having bared its secrets already, it only seems fair that the WiFi + 3G model should have the same treatment. iFixit wasn’t going to let a little thing like scarcity stop them from ripping asunder the WWAN-enabled tablet and peering at its cellular guts, and we can’t say we blame them. Inside things are much as you’d expect from the WiFi-only version, so that means the same chipsets, battery packs and radios as before. Apple has used two different modems, a Qualcomm MDM6600 for the CDMA version on Verizon, and an Infineon 337S3833 for the GSM version on AT&T. Obviously the CDMA iPad 2 doesn’t have a SIM slot, either, which on the GSM model is built into the headphone jack assembly. It’s also a pretty poor show if you wanted to replac...

Good news if you’ve got a T-Mobile USA Dell Streak 7 and would rather use it with AT&T. According to StreakSmart, when unlocked the T-Mobile version of the Android tablet actually packs support for not only T-Mo’s 4G HSPA+ network, but AT&T’s as well. That means high-speed data on both GSM carriers, thanks to the Streak 7 quietly including a radio that works with both 1700/2100MHz (AWS) and 850/1900MHz. You’ll need to pay for an unlock code at this stage – UnlockStreak gets recommended, for $49 with a 1-3 day turnaround – since there’s apparently no free unlock system yet, but if you’ve been eying AT&T’s HSPA+ enviously then you might not be too upset about that. All eyes were on Samsung’s larger Galaxy Tab 10.1 at MWC 2011, but if you judge a Dell Streak 5 a tablet by virtue of its 5-inch display, then the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 has to be considered one as well. The 5-inch PMP looks like an oversized Galaxy S – unsurprising, since Samsung considers it a varient with 3G missing – with a WVGA display, 720p HD playback and a pair of cameras for video chat and photography. Since it runs Android, and has Android Market access, there’s plenty of software out there, and a microphone – tuned, Samsung tells us, for VoIP apps like Skype – means that, as long as you have a wireless connection (or a mobile hotspot) you could feasibly use this as a phone replacement. In fact, Skype and Qik Plus are both preloaded, along...

Following persistent rumours of plans for a smaller, cheaper Apple iPhone nano, the latest Apple rumour this week is that the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning to release an iPhone 5 with a larger, 4-inch screen.Details of Apple's next gen model reportedly leaked from component suppliers via Digitimes suggesting that Apple will release a larger-screened iPhone in order to compete with the growing threat from Android in the 4-to-7-inch smartphone market, such as Samsung's' Galaxy S and Google's Nexus S.We need a bigger screenThat's according to component suppliers, who told DigiTimes that the production lines for Apple's next gen iPhone have begun testing."The component suppliers noted that the production lines for Apple's next generation iPhone have begun testing, and Apple is interes...

While perusing Samsung's stand today we caught a tasty little treat - well, not so little, as the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 is a pretty big phone/tablet hybrid.Featuring all the power of the Samsung Galaxy S (ie a 1GHz processor and microSD slot in tandem with some decent internal storage) the Galaxy S Wi-Fi lacks the eye-popping Super AMOLED screen and 3G connection. It fits in the hands pretty well, and is a little smaller than the Dell Streak too, making it easy to hold in the hand. It's also thinner and lighter than the Streak, and features portals for downloading movies as well.Take a gander and see what you think - is it worth forking out a few notes for a dedicated media player when the Galaxy S2 is just around the corner?Related StoriesMWC 2011: Steve Ballmer: potential of Nokia Win...

If you were thinking the Samsung Galaxy S2 was too big, try this out for size. It's a 4.8 inch phone that's only a couple of inches shy of the Galaxy Tab.While it's not massively wide as you can see, the Iconia Smart would find it easier to make conversation with a Dell Streak 5 than any of the new breed of super-Androids. The buttons at the bottom are actually highly tactile and you can get a really decent press on them. Despite initial reservations, we actually rather liked them by the time we'd finished playing with the handset. Not everything about this handset is Smart as you'll see shortly but, despite its size, it still feels and looks like a phone rather than, say, the Dell Streak 5 which really does feel like a mini tablet. Packing Android 2.3.2, the Iconia Smart is probably as big...

Samsung might unveil the second generation of the Galaxy Tab at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Pocket-lint says they have exclusive information about the new tablet and that it will be running on a tablet-specific version of Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The tablet will have a 10.1-inch display, 8.0 megapixel camera, and dual-core Qualcomm processor. The tablet will be thinner and lighter than its predecessor and will feature a black coloring on the back instead of white. It’s believed that the Samsung Tab 2 will be physically smaller than the iPad but have a larger screen size. A swarm of tablets are about to land with Motorola’s Xoom, Dell Streak 7, and the expected announcement of Apple’s iPad 2. Be prepared. Which upcoming tablet do you think has the best chance...

The first half of 2011 is shaping up to be all about tablets. Truly, the tablet mania that everyone was so adamant about last year is finally here. While dozens of tablets were announced and shown off at CES in January, most of them won't be arriving until later this month or the March time frame at the earliest. The main reason for the delay...

So HP has made its first real tablet play. And the results are... impressive, if not surprising. We've previously seen some renders of the new HP TouchPad, but we knew little more about it until last night. The 9.7-inch device is a beautiful-looking thing, and we can't wait until it appears for real. It's a real challenger to the iPad's dominance in a hardware sense, while webOS also looks like it could be a real third way alongside iOS and Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Notably though, there's absolutely zero indication on pricing as yet.HP TouchPad: what you need to knowWe've always thought webOS might be good on a tablet and from what we've seen, it looks like it's been implemented well. It uses the Activity Card interface - tapping one makes an app full screen - but it's disappointing that lega...

Dell has revealed that it will be releasing a 10-inch Windows 7 tablet computer later this year. The Dell Business Tablet, which will be aimed at the professional market rather than casual owners, will run on an Intel processor, but aside from that no other specs are known. A version of the slate will also be available running Android, following on from the 5-inch Dell Streak tablet which impressed TechRadar last summer.Dell Mean BusinessThe announcement came during the Dell Means Business event in San Francisco at which the company unveiled 39 new products. Also on show was an updated version of the tablet/laptop hybrid Latitude XT3, and a host of portable and desktop options. But it's the Dell Business Tablet that will make the headlines. At the “Dell Means Business” Press Conference, Dell announced the largest consumer product line they have ever launched, with 39 products in the works. The products include include laptops, tablets, desktops, and workstations. The interesting mention was the 10 inch Android Tablet and maybe a Windows 7 Tablet. Not many details are available, but speculation is that the tablet will run Android 2.2 (Froyo), and the Stage UI overlay. That means Dell will already be starting out behind the curve, since Android 3 Honeycomb is the latest tablet software. For now, it doesn’t seem that Dell is going to make Android their first priority, they are obviously more focused on Windows 7. We will keep you updated as more details emerge. T-Mo has just announced one of the crazier deals in their long, storied history of crazy deals. As a Valentines Day celebration, the carrier will offer all of their smartphones for free. This deal will only be good on Feb 11 and 12. Customers will be able to take advantage of the craziness both online and in retail outlets. Supplies of the better T-Mobile phones- like the Vibrant and the G2, are likely to be rather constricted. If you plan to hit up a store, you’d better get there early. Nothing gets people to commit to expensive, multi-year contracts like a shiny free phone. That’s what T-Mo’s betting on, anyway. The imminent Verizon iPhone has them quaking in their magenta boots. This is a (slightly desperate) attempt to reduce the potential pool of Big Red iPhone ...

And the Streak gets larger. Dell's original Streak was just 5" in size, which was quite small for a "tablet." But then again, it was one of only a few tablets that could double as a smartphone. Apple and News Corp. have announced a press conference on 2 February to launch The Daily, the media conglomerate's long-awaited iPad-only newspaper. What appears to be a Nokia tablet running the long-awaited MeeGo platform has appeared in some fuzzy spy-shots today. Only one thing is certain from the screengrabs; the device will play video. What formats these will take, and whether it will handle full HD or even 3D remains to be seen. There's also what looks like an aeroplane in the top left-hand corner, which suggests an airplane mode with all the device's connections severed; presumably these would include Wi-Fi and possibly 3G or Bluetooth. The darkness descendsThe darkness of the shot makes the device form hard to make out but its bezel certainly looks relatively thin, on a par with the Dell Streak, perhaps.
