Review: BlackBerry Torch 9810

By TechRadar, published 09-09-2011

Overview, design and feelThis time last year, BlackBerry fans were salivating at the imminent release of the Torch 9800. For the first time, those who'd been demanding a touchscreen smartphone from RIM (without SurePress, which we'll just gloss over) were getting their way with the safety net of a keyboard below that slid out. On top of that was 3G, a 5MP camera and the brand spanking new OS. What wasn't to love? And 12 months on we feel like we're experiencing a bit of deja-vu, because the Torch 9810 is now hitting shelves. And to look at it, not much has changed. The only thing that you'll notice as being really different on the exterior is the material it's made from. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 has been given less a makeover and more a new jacket. Gone is the black and dark chrome fascia,...

Review: BlackBerry Torch 9860

By TechRadar, published 09-06-2011

Overview and designIt's taken a ridiculously long time to come, but this is it. This is the one. After the clickable screen of the BlackBerry Storm 2 and the touchscreen-with-slide-out-keyboard shenanigans of the original BlackBerry Torch, RIM has finally released a proper touchscreen smartphone. No ands or buts – the BlackBerry Torch 9860 is a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, and that's it. Granted, the iPhone managed a similar-ish feat in 2007, but RIM's insistence in holding on to the designs that made it big in the first place have held it back from this moment. This 3.7-inch touchscreen the largest RIM has ever made, it's also the highest resolution, with a handy 480 x 800 pixels on display. Which is good, because you want the new BlackBerry OS 7 to look its best, don't you?Powering t...

Review: BlackBerry Bold 9900

By TechRadar, published 08-10-2011

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes as something of a shock. You see, for years, BlackBerry has, in a sense, been catching up. That's not a dig at its parent company – it's practically royalty in push email and corporate handset circles. But it has been rare for RIM to lead the way. Cameras, internet browsing, HTML emails – all were included on RIM's phones years after they'd become standard fare on other handsets. For recent examples of decent phones that didn't really push the envelope all that far, just take a look at the Bold 9780 and 9700.But the Bold 9000 finally offers some cutting-edge tech, and in an attractive package to boot. Its 1.2GHz processor, high-spec touchscreen, brand new OS7 and HD video camera are all specs we never really expected a BlackBerry to have before the next m...

By TechRadar, published 06-10-2011

With Windows Phone 7, Microsoft went from being a non-entity in the world of modern smartphones to becoming an important player. The old Windows Mobile operating systems had their fans, but they weren't as consumer-friendly as the iPhone and Android devices.WP7 changed all that, bringing integration with Facebook, a clear, touch-friendly user interface, slick multimedia functionality and Xbox Live games and connectivity.Of course, Microsoft didn't forget its roots, either. There's email and Exchange support, and it's the only mobile OS with official Microsoft Office apps. All of this means there's something for everyone, so we've looked at what's best for each kind of owner below.Best for working - HTC 7 ProAs the only phone operating system with Microsoft Office apps available for it, Win...

BlackBerry Torch 2 pictured again

By TechRadar, published 26-05-2011

The BlackBerry Torch 2 has hit the catwalk once again, being papped in fairly low quality showing off its shiny new back plate. It doesn't look like this metal (?) back panel is made of the same cross-hatched glass that the Bold Touch 9900 is rocking; in fact, it looks a bit low-rent for RIM's premium agenda. But, having been so fashionably late to BlackBerry World that it missed the entire convention, the BlackBerry Torch 2 is yet to get its official reveal so we know nothing for sure. What the spec? That hasn't stopped the handset sneaking out into the wild in photos and revealing its secret specifications in a half-hearted hands on.These include a 1.2Ghz processor (likely to be a single-core affair but still double that of the original BlackBerry Torch), 512MB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, a mag...

Blackberry Bold 9900 and 9930 hands-on [Video]

By SlashGear, published 05-02-2011

RIM may have only brought one new smartphone along to BlackBerry World 2011 this week, but the new Bold 9900/9930 promises to slot neatly into the flagship position in the company’s range. Offering the much-requested double hit of touchscreen and physical keyboard, in a candybar form-factor, the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 also marks the debut of BlackBerry 7 OS. Check out our hands-on report after the cut. RIM is keen to point out that the Bold 9900/9930 is the thinnest smartphone its produced to-date, at 10.5mm thick, and it’s certainly slim in the hand. The familiar Bold profile of a brushed metal bezel and tapered, textured back panel is evident, and the whole thing balances neatly between feeling solid and simultaneously lightweight. These aren’t production units, ob...

Virgin Media adds BlackBerry phones to PAYG line-up

By TechRadar, published 02-03-2011

Virgin Media is now offering BlackBerry handsets on Pay As You Go, including the BlackBerry Torch 9800. "Astonishing" BlackBerry sales on the Branson-owned network last year saw over 200,000 fruity phone sales making up a third of Virgin Media's contract shipments. Available from today, the flexible Pay As You Go deals include the BlackBerry Curve 8520, BlackBerry Curve 3G, BlackBerry Pearl 3G, BlackBerry Bold 9780 and BlackBerry Torch 9800. Data-hungryThe obvious issue with paying-as-you-go on any smartphone is that using data services could eat through your credit pretty darn quickly. So the fact that Virgin is offering weekly (£2) and monthly (£5) passes for customers to use email, BlackBerry Messenger, apps and internet browsing is quite handy, leaving regular top-ups free for calls ...

Hands on the White BlackBerry Torch

By SlashGear, published 28-01-2011

Showing Apple how it’s done when it comes to releasing white versions of their phones–the white iPhone 4 being still elusive–RIM is now offering a white version of their BlackBerry Torch 9800. The folks over at Pocket-lint got intimate with the White BlackBerry Torch and offered up many lovely photos of their hands on experience. When it comes to specs, everything remains the same as the original black version with Blackberry 6 OS, 5-megapixel camera with flash, autofocus, environment settings, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 512MB of RAM, and a 3.2-inch 480×360 touchscreen. Only other difference besides being white appears to be the ribbed texture on the back side. The verdict is that it feels good. The phone will be available exclusively through Vodafone soon.
