BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 Review

At first glance, Porsche Design and BlackBerry might not make obvious bed-fellows. Still, the car firm's aesthetically-obsessed arm has taken up with Canada's finest, and the Porsche Design P'9981 is the result: maple syrup by way of Stuttgart. The less forgiving might draw comparisons between Porsche's legendary reluctance to diverge from its original 1963 car design, and BlackBerry's struggle to break free of its old OS. The frugal will likely be too busy gaping at the $2,350 price tag. So, Porsche or Pinto? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Porsche Design starts as it means to go on, with an oversized box first presenting the P'9981 and its desk-stand in one dense foam layer, before revealing different chargers for near-global use, USB cable and headphones, various documentation and your exclusive technical support card, complete with PIN, to access freephone assistance. It's not quite Vertu's Concierge, mind; the team will help you set up your P'9981 and figure out its quirks, but not book you theater tickets. The smartphone itself is certainly distinctive. RIM basically handed over the key parts of its Bold 9900 flagship, and Porsche Design dressed them up in a Dynasty-era suit, shoulderpads and all.

Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry review

Last summer, RIM introduced the world to the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry 7 operating system. In spite of adding a faster processor, slimmer profile, and the nebulous Liquid Graphics, that combination failed to spark imaginations or stem the tide of dissatisfied BlackBerry customers upgrading away from the platform. None of that is going to change dramatically with the arrival of the Porsche Design P‘9981, which is — internally at least — a reissue of the 9900, using the same processor, memory, display, camera, OS, and even battery. Still, Porsche has been running a Design Studio since 1972 and has the iconic aesthetic of the 911 — a look that’s endured for nearly half a century with only small alterations — to vouch for its ability to create timeless products. In adding the P‘9981 to its exalted portfolio, Porsche Design must believe that it can fashion out a smartphone capable of standing apart from its peers, much in the way the cars of its parent company do. So does it succeed — can excellence in design transcend humdrum components and milquetoast software?

BlackBerry P'9981 Review

Until now, BlackBerrys have pretty much looked the same – whether they had a keyboard, touchscreen and keyboard or whatever, you could still pick the BlackBerrys out of a line-up of mobile handsets. So, if you're after something that stands out from the crowd, you wouldn't be picking up one of RIM's handsets – but that has just changed with the introduction of the Blackberry P'9981, which has been designed by Porsche. That important point not only changes how the phone looks, but it also affects the price – taking it to an eye-watering 1,275. As we have come to expect from RIM, the handset is terribly well made, and Porsche has given it an industrial look that just oozes class, price – and testosterone. It has a retro-look, metal, squared body, as well as a luxurious leather back cover, which we found was easy to take off, and yet still felt very sturdy. Below the 2.8inch touch display are five buttons, which sit flush to the screen. Navigation is simple for Blackberry connoisseurs – and you have the usual keyboard, but this time it comes with flat metal keys, which feature a groove at the bottom to help the typing experience, and to display the alternate symbol for each key. It's still efficient and comfortable to use, although we did find the keys were a little heavier than on your average BlackBerry.
