BlackBerry Pearl 3G review

If we were playing a game of word association, we're guessing the word BlackBerry would be quickly followed by QWERTY and business. It's been like that since the RIM entered the market, rarely erring from the 'QWERTY keyboard, functional design' mode - apart from the Storm range, which hasn't really changed the game.It's a stereotype RIM hopes to finally break with its latest consumer-friendly smartphone, the BlackBerry Pearl 3G.The Pearl 3G is certainly small and slim; a BlackBerry Bold 9000 could swallow it up whole and still have room for an old-fashioned stodgy dessert. Or if you want specifics, that's around 108 x 50 x 13.3mm. Small package means fewer features? Not a bit of it. The Pearl almost creaks with features, including Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, GPS, a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and video recording, a well-featured media player and an optical trackpad.It also sports multitasking, social networking for the likes of Facebook and Twitter as standard and, of course, the power of BlackBerry email and messaging. Just without the QWERTY, which is replaced by RIM's SureType technology for inputting your text.Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The one new feature that the Pearl couldn't do without, of course, is the optical trackpad, which puts paid to the physical trackball which could get stuck or clogged up with dirt. Its replacement works at least as well, and your finger slides over it perfectly. We're impressed by how fast and accurate it is, and picking out an icon in a menu is easy enough to give plenty of touchscreen phones a run for their money. When you pick it up, the Pearl feels like a Bold which has been squeezed from either side. It uses the same materials and has the same basic aesthetic. RIM was sensible enough to supply two soft rubber cases: they're pretty basic, but do improve the grip. And given that they come free, we're not going to complain. But you'll have to hope that your network chooses wisely, as the colour scheme is up to them. The top side of the phone is where the multimedia hotkeys are, and they give quick access to the MP3 player and other features. The only hitch is that they are also used to lock and unlock the phone, and you're never quite sure what's going to happen when you press one. The Pearl 3G might be small, but isn't a cut-down version of the Bold. With a 600 MHz processor, it doesn't drag—quite the opposite, in fact.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G

BlackBerry was originally the business handset of choice, loved by professionals everywhere. But it's slowly starting to shed its business-only image as more and more consumers are turned on to its charms – and the Pearl 3G is the culmination of this. As well as BlackBerry's business features, there's also media and social networking on offer. The last Pearl handset, the 8110, was two years ago, and the Pearl 3G takes that formula and improves on it. The Pearl 3G is has a polished black finish and is about the size of a standard Nokia handset. It feels good in your hand and your pocket, and the classic RIM keypad has nicely spaced-out keys in a nice wavy line formation. It's the standard RIM keypad – although if you're in America you'll get the same half-QWERTY as featured on the original Pearl. The standard, UK, keypad is the best you'll find anywhere though. Writing long messages is almost as quick as it is on bigger BlackBerry models such as the Bold 9700. Both the small handed and the fat fingered should get on just fine. Instead of the RIM trackball, there's an optical trackpad, which isn't actually as responsive and resulted in some delays when we were scrolling.
