Phone Reviews: Mobiles and Smartphones

The Curve 9380 is the latest member of the BlackBerry family and has an entirely touch-based interface. Situated in between entry-level handsets and more mid-range mobiles, how will the lack of RIM's famous physical keyboard affect our opinion of the new phone? And how does it stand up to the other touch-based smartphones it will have to compete with? The new Curve is thin and light. It's easy to hold and won't weigh you down. There's not much else to say about the external design: it's a smartphone that looks like a BlackBerry. Disappointingly, the extremely shiny finish soon ended up covered with greasy fingerprints. The same is true of the shiny screen which clearly hasn't received any kind of protective coating. We much prefer the soft-touch materials used for the new BlackBerry Bold 9790 which we recently reviewed. The 3.2'', 360 x 480 pixel screen did reasonably well in our tests for contrast and brightness, and is also capable of reproducing colours accurately. The resolution is a little limited for a screen this big, leaving things looking pixellated if you look too closely. It's also a problem when browsing the web, where you'll often have to zoom into pages to read them properly.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 9380 Review

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 marks somewhat of a milestone for RIM, as it is the company’s first device of the supposedly affordable Curve series that comes in a touchscreen-only form. It disposes of the legendary physical keyboard, as found on its 9370 cousin, replacing it with a fairly tiny 3.2” display. In comparison, the BlackBerry Torch 9860 is touchscreen-only as well, but has a more generous 3.7-incher with better resolution. The rest of the specs on the Curve 9380, like the 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 5MP fixed-focus camera with LED flash are nothing to get too excited over, but with RIM it’s supposedly the software that counts. So did the Canadians manage to usher the entry level Curve series in the touchscreen era, while at the same time preserving the BlackBerry spirit with the Curve 9380? Read on to find out…Thanks to the modest 3.2” display the BlackBerry Curve 9380 is a very compact and lightweight device that cups well in the palm, while the tapered back and rounded sides add to the comfortable feeling in the hand. Your thumb reaches everywhere on the display, making one-handed operation a piece of cake.

BlackBerry Curve 9380 review: Not what you'd expect

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is RIM's first ever-released Curve with a touchscreen. The Curve lineup is usually an expression of RIM's understanding for a budget phone and this one supposedly, doesn't make a difference. It should attract customers with a lower entry price while offering the full BB OS 7 experience. The new Curve 9380 is basically a downgraded Torch 9860 it has a less-capable processor and smaller and low-res display. Both gadgets look similar too, but the Curve's pricetags makes up for the differences. So, let's take a look at the Curve 9380 full feature list, followed by potential deal-breakers as we saw them. As you can see, most of the listed drawbacks of the new Curve are typical BlackBerry. So if tyou are even thinking about getting any of RIM's phones, you've probably already accepted to live with those the mandatory BIS plan for emails and data traffic as well as the poor variety of apps and the high App World prices. So, the Curve 9380 offers the latest BlackBerry experience on a cheaper price and without losing much of its appeal. The BlackBerry OS 7 on this Curve is as capable and fast as on the Torch 9860, the main difference being the lack of HD video recording. Our traditional hardware tour starts right after the jump.

BlackBerry Curve 9380 Review

Quite clearly, RIM is focusing on the touchscreen phone market this year. Phones with touchscreens and QWERTY keypads as well as touchscreen only devices are now available in the Curve range as well. And we think it is a good value for money device. Read on to know why. Having used the Torch 9860 quite extensively, the form factor of the Curve 9380 didn't take getting much used to. The form factor is essentially the same, only slightly smaller. It is built very well too. The four keys below the touchscreen - call connect and disconnect, menu and return have a better feel to them, in fact. The integrated design means you don't feel as though you are pressing actual buttons! There is the traditional chrome border running around the sides of the phone. Flip it over, and you have a shiny black battery cover. Absolutely hate the side opening mechanism of the cover, which is a pain in the nails! Overall, the phone feels slightly classier and expensive than the actual price tag. Even though Curve phones have traditionally been far behind the Bold series in terms of build quality and looks, this one seems to blur those lines. RIM toned down the processor power on this phone, from the usual 1GHz or so processors to an 806MHz one.

BlackBerry Curve 9380 review

After playing it cool for a few years, RIM has apparently decided that there's something to this touchscreen phone lark after all, releasing a budget all-touch device in the shape of the BlackBerry Curve 9380. In the last few months we've seen a touchscreen added to the Bold in the form of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, an update to the Torch line in the BlackBerry Torch 9810, and a new, all-touch addition to the Torch family in the BlackBerry Torch 9860. Now it's the Curve family's turn, even though we thought it was doing fine without touch in our BlackBerry Curve 9360 review. Instead of taking the Bold route and adding touch capability to the screen above the keyboard, RIM has been somewhat more aggressive with the BlackBerry Curve 9380. The keyboard's gone completely, in favour of a 3.2-inch 360 x 480 touchscreen. This puts it far closer to the Torch 9860 than its Curve brethren on the outside, although it's rather more like the Curve 9360 when it comes to the internals.Instead of the Torch's nippy 1.2GHz processor, the Curve 9380 ticks along at 806MHz, though there's a reasonable 512MB of RAM for multitasking.

BlackBerry Curve 9380 Review

BlackBerrys used to be the preserve of the business user, but with the success of BBM, RIM has found itself appealing more and more to the younger market. So it has upped its focus on social networking and introduced touchscreens to keep up. With that in mind, RIM has just launched its first all-touch device in the lower price bracket – the Curve 9380. Reminiscent of the company's flagship device the Torch 9860, and running the same Blackberry 7.0 OS, we wonder if it is possible to successfully bring the latest OS to a lower-spec device. When you first pick it up, the 9380 feels light at 98g, and the shiny plastic body feels rather flimsy and cheap. It sits nicely in the hand though, as it has the benefit of that nicely curved reverse side. Surprise surprise? So, under the plastic cover, are there any surprises? For power, the Curve relies on an 806Mhz chip, which means its runs pretty smoothly for web browsing and navigating, but don't expect to be enjoying a lot of intense gaming. The five-megapixel snapper is pretty good and simple to use – plus Rim has included a dedicated key under the volume rocker on the side of the device. For anyone who wants to join the touchscreen revolution on a familiar BlackBerry handset, it is a good choice, as it benefits from media players and basic social networking features.
