RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G 9310 Review

Following in the footsteps of the BlackBerry Curve 9330 from two years ago comes the new BlackBerry Curve 9310, available from Verizon Wireless for $49 with a 2-year contract. There really isn't anything inspiring on the new model, but the low price is sure to attract budget conscious consumers that are looking for a BlackBerry. Included in the retail package is the BlackBerry Curve 9310 smartphone, 1450 mAh battery, wall charger with detachable microUSB cable, and user guides. The BlackBerry Curve 9310 closely resembles other BlackBerry devices, but is relatively compact at 4.29” H x 2.36” W x 0.5” D and is lightweight at only 3.66 oz. Because of this, it fits quite comfortably in the hand, and can inconspicuously be placed in your pocket. The black and gray metallic combination looks nice, and we like the texture on the back of the phone that provides a firm grip. Faithful to its siblings, we find the optical trackpad and BlackBerry buttons located below the display. For the most part, we felt at home typing on them, but the QWERTY keypad can be cramped at times as we occasionally would press two keys at once.

BlackBerry Curve 9310 review

Despite its tenuous future, Research in Motion is sticking to its guns and pumping out handsets. This includes models from RIM's lower-end series, the BlackBerry Curve. Designed for users with smaller hands and fewer demands, the Curve 9310 touts the familiar portrait QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and the BlackBerry 7.1 operating system. The device is available on two carriers, Boost Mobile and Verizon. At just $50, the latter's model is cheaper off the shelf. Boost's costs $100, but for $45 a month, you can get unlimited texting, calling, and BlackBerry Messenger. And if you pay your phone bill on time, your plan will shrink down to $30 a month. Verizon's unlimited plan, on the other hand, cost a steady $80 a month. Compact and straightforward, the 9310 doesn't stray too far from the canon. Because of that, you can expect a solid BlackBerry handset -- despite its manufacturer being anything but. The BlackBerry Curve 9310 doesn't have any design surprises hidden anywhere. It still sports the same black, plastic, and professional aesthetic as most RIM devices. It stands 4.29 inches tall, 2.36 inches wide, and half an inch thick.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 9310

The last thing RIM needs right now, after its middling, behind-the-times BlackBerry Curve 9370 ($99.99, 3 stars), is an even lower-end version, but that's exactly what we have here with the BlackBerry Curve 9310 ($49.99 direct). While it still has the same fluid interface and amazing keyboard for such a compact device, it also has virtually none of the features it needs to work as a modern smartphone. And while we'd love to recommend the 9310 as an inspired, entry-level texting phone, Verizon isn't pricing it like one, with plans starting at a whopping $80 per month. All of this leaves the Curve 9310 in search of a customer. The BlackBerry Curve 9310 certainly looks a lot classier than cheaper texting phones. It measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic, but with a pleasant, soft touch back panel, tapered edges, and a muted, matte gray plastic rim around the front panel. The 2.4-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD screen has no touch capability, and what is now considered the absolute minimum screen resolution on a contemporary smartphone.
