There are currently nine versions of the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for sale in the US. But the ones offered by Cricket, MetroPCS and Virgin Mobile demand special scrutiny. All three carriers sell this smartphone for a very low monthly rate, with no contract. Virgin's plans are a little more expensive than Metro's and Cricket's, but Virgin's network is both 3G (which Metro isn't) and available nationwide (which Cricket isn't). This is the only smartphone available for Virgin Mobile right now, and combined with the plans we think it's a very good buy. If you didn't know, by the way, Virgin Mobile is Sprint; it's just one of Sprint's prepaid brands. So you should expect the same coverage, call quality and speeds on Virgin Mobile as you get on ordinary Sprint phones. By this point, you know what makes the BlackBerry Curve 8530 tick. It measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.9 ounces. The Curve 8530 doesn't look exciting, but that's fine given its understated mission. The 2.4-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD screen looked bright and colorful, but it wasn't particularly sharp because of the low resolution.
Now we're really talking. Early last year, MetroPCS made big news when it priced the BlackBerry Curve 8330 at $50 per month for unlimited usage. Now MetroPCS hopes to keep the rally going with the BlackBerry Curve 8530, which hit the major U.S. carriers late in 2009. This shrewdly updated model costs less up front than before, and now works in all MetroPCS cities with the carrier's $60 unlimited plan, which includes everything - voice calls, texting, data, e-mail, Web, and GPS navigation. As a result, it's an easy shoo-in for an Editors' Choice award. Even in revised 8500-series form, the BlackBerry Curve's design is now very familiar. The MetroPCS version looks virtually identical to the Verizon Curve 8530 ($99, ) I reviewed several months ago. The Curve 8530 measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. The 2.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD may be considered low-res these days. But it's fine for most messaging and Web-based tasks, and the test model's screen looked bright and crisp. The new trackpad is a big improvement on the old, unreliable trackball. The four-row QWERTY keyboard features sculpted, highly raised keys and a sensible layout for fast typing, just like prior models.
Refined? Yes. Exciting? Not so much. With the BlackBerry Curve 8530 ($99.99 through Verizon Wireless with two-year contract), RIM has tweaked one of the top-selling smart phones over the last year and a half. Like the older Curve 8330, you still get a spacious keyboard, long battery life, reliable push e-mail, and a pocket-friendly design. But the 8530 adds such welcome enhancements as Wi-Fi, an optical trackpad, and a zippier processor (no more spinning hourglass). On the other hand, the 8530 lacks the sleeker interface of the identically priced HTC Droid Eris, and it brings up the rear when it comes to Web surfing. Is this sleek successor worth the upgrade, or should you step up to the classier BlackBerry Tour? And how does the new Curve stack up to Verizon’s Android devices? The Curve 8530 definitely looks more modern than its predecessor. Decked out in a glossy black plastic case (also available in violet), this smart phone has a streamlined aesthetic. We especially like the rubberized soft-touch finish on the top, sides, and part of the back, which makes the 8530 easy to grip. RIM also integrated media controls on the top of the device so you can change tracks or pause playback at any time.
