RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G for Sprint Review

Though the BlackBerry Curve 8530 was just released at the beginning of the year, RIM is back with the Curve 3G 9330 for Sprint and Verizon. This new Curve offers virtually no physical upgrades to the 8530, but under the hood it packs a new processor, more memory and most importantly is upgradable to BlackBerry OS 6. Sprint’s version is packaged with a 2GB microSD card, AC adapter, microUSB charging/data cable and stereo headphones. The RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 is identical to the outgoing 8530 in terms of design, with one exception. The trackpad on the Curve 3G is slightly raised which actually makes a lot of difference and gives this new Curve a better feel. It could be our imagination but the trackpad also feels a bit more responsive. When set at the same levels we feel that we have more fine control on the 9330 than we did with the 8530. The Curve 3G feels more like the Bold 9650, and in all likelihood they probably use the same trackpad.Size Visualization ToolThe Curve 3G 9330 is available in both Graphite Grey and Royal Purple, both of which feature a chromed finish around the front. The is soft touch with some nubbed texture, a welcome upgrade from the Sprint 8530’s plain plastic back.

BlackBerry Curve 3G

If you're looking for innovation and the next big thing in phones, the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 on Verizon isn't it. But if you're looking for a device that can handle e-mail, messaging, and run a decent amount of apps, this smart phone will get the job done. Plus, at $29.99 with a 2-year contract, the Curve 3G is one of the most affordable BlackBerrys ever. Is this handset right for you?If you've seen a BlackBerry released in the past two years, then you've essentially seen the Curve 3G. Almost identical to last year's Curve 8530, the Curve 3G measures 4.3 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches and weighs 3.7 ounces. It feels light next to other smart phones, but the textured plastic shell it has doesn't feel cheap. The phone comes in charcoal and fuchsia red colors. The charcoal unit we tested had black soft-touch sides and black plastic over the buttons. The front of the phone uses an optical trackpad--which was mostly precise--for navigation. The top of the phone has media controls so you can easily play, pause, fast forward, rewind, or change tracks. The left side of the Curve 3G has a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microUSB/charging port, and a voice dialing button. The right side has two volume buttons and a camera button.

BlackBerry Curve 3G

The BlackBerry Curve 3G is probably the least mysterious phone upgrade in America. It takes the now-familiar Curve 8520 design - itself a modest refresh of the popular 8320 - and adds a 3G radio for T-Mobile subscribers, in addition to the phone's excellent UMA Wi-Fi calling feature. Fortunately, there are a few other upgrades underneath the surface too, making this phone a useful alternative to trendy Android smartphones. The Curve 3G measures 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. This latest variant is made of a mixture of shiny plastic and smoked chrome, with a soft touch back panel. Combined with the durable optical trackpad, my graphite-colored Curve 3G looks sharp if somewhat staid. A violet version is also available. The screen is the same 320-by-240-pixel, 2.4-inch panel as ever. It's bright and colorful, though fonts are a little fuzzy. The four-row, sculpted QWERTY keyboard is just about perfect given the phone's svelte design. Fast typing was a cinch. The Curve 3G is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSDPA (1700/2100 MHz) device. The Wi-Fi radio now connects to faster 802.11n networks.

BlackBerry Curve 3G review

The BlackBerry Curve 3G looks like yet another BlackBerry handset. Its full QWERTY keyboard sits below a 2.4-inch screen, with the 2-megapixel camera on the reverse. Offering 3G connectivity as well as Wi-Fi, the handset promises fast internet browsing while apps and themes can be easily downloaded from the BlackBerry App World. There's not much new to see on the BlackBerry Curve 3G. That famous physical QWERTY keyboard sits in a sensible-looking chassis with rounded corners and textured back, while the chrome-effect border panel houses the 480x360 LCD screen and a series of flush buttons alongside the optical track-pad. The microUSB port nestles alongside the 3.5mm headphone connection and the left-hand convenience key, whose default option is the voice-dialer shortcut. If you find yourself getting frustrated by repeated orders to "Say a command", you can easily change this in the settings. The camera button is housed on the other side of the handset, just below the volume controls. The top panel features the BlackBerry Curve 3G's media controls – play/pause, skip forwards and skip back.

BlackBerry Curve 3G Review

The BlackBerry Curve had gone largely unnoticed in the shadow of the innovative BlackBerry Torch. An upgraded version of the Curve 8520, the Curve 3G is targeted at messaging obsessives who have not yet tried the BlackBerry and want to give it a try – a \"my first BlackBerry” if you like. The BlackBerry Curve 3G is the same size as the 8520, which is a nice size in the hand. The front is split equally between the efficient QWERTY keyboard and the 2.46-inch display. The keyboard is expertly designed, with raised keys that make it easier to tell between the keys. We found that using our thumbs to type had us racing smoothly around the keyboard, with an easy-access alt key on the bottom left providing access to numerals and punctuation marks. The centre keys may cause those with bigger thumbs to falter but otherwise it works well for a small QWERTY. The familiar BlackBerry trackpad sits above the keyboard, and has adjustable sensitivity – it's so good that the traditional and iconic BlackBerry Trackball has faded into memory. The textured rubber back looks a little cheap unfortunately and can't compete with the leather cover on the Bold 9700. The front fascia has either red or chrome trim, depending on whether you want striking looks or a more businesslike device.
